Q7. Gathering of the Nations

Recommended Posts

Q7. (Isaiah 11:10-16) What does it mean that “the nations” will rally to the Messiah when he appears? Who are these “nations”? Who else will be “gathered” at this time? How does this prophecy relate to Jesus’ and Paul’s teaching about the Rapture (Mark 13:26-27; 2 Thessalonians 2:1)? When will this prophecy be fulfilled?

What does it mean that “the nations” will rally to the Messiah when he appears? Now Isaiah prophesies that the Messiah will gather his people together on the Last Day (quoted in Romans 15:12):"10 In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him,and his place of rest will be glorious

Who are these “nations”? 11 In that day the Lord will reach out his hand a second time to reclaim the remnant that is left of his people from Assyria  from Lower Egypt, from Upper Egypt, from Cush, from Elam, from Babylonia, from Hamath and from the islands of the sea.

Who else will be “gathered” at this time? 12 He will raise a banner for the nationsand gather the exiles of Israel;

he will assemble the scattered people of Judah from the four quarters of the earth." (Isaiah 11:10-12)

How does this prophecy relate to Jesus’ and Paul’s teaching about the Rapture (Mark 13:26-27; 2 Thessalonians 2:1)?

This is probably the first prophecy of what is known as the Rapture or great Gathering of God's people when Christ returns. In fact, the wording in Jesus' prophecy of the Last Day echoes Isaiah:

"At that time men will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. And he will send his angels and gather[99] his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens." (Mark 13:26-27)

In 2 Thessalonians, we see this same language regarding the rapture.

"Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered[100] to him...." (2 Thessalonians 2:1)

When will this prophecy be fulfilled?  No man knows the hour.  Be ready.

Malachias 1:11 For from the rising of the sun even to the going down, my name is great among the Gentiles, and in every place there is sacrifice, and there is offered to my name a clean oblation: for my name is great among the Gentiles, saith the Lord of hosts.

Thus, the highway is being made straight, and in every nation there are people/believers gathered under Jesus Christ's one banner within His one kingdom with it's one holy/clean sacrifice/oblation.

As for the entirely of the man-made invention of "Darbyism" i.e. rapture as understood by a tiny minority of faith communities, this false notion of escapism I will not address, for it is simply another extension of their continued symptoms of error to due to a lack of actual knowledge and understanding of divine reality.

Q7. (Isaiah 11:10-16)

What does it mean that "the nations" will rally to the Messiah when he appears?

Who are these "nations"?

Who else will be "gathered" at this time?

How does this prophecy relate to Jesus' and Paul's teaching about the Rapture (Mark 13:26-27; 2 Thessalonians 2:1)?

When will this prophecy be fulfilled?

All people and all nations will rally to the Messiah. This includes the remnant of Jews who will be gathered back to Israel. The enemies of the Jewish nation as well as the Gentiles. The prophecy will be fulfilled after the Rapture and the Tribulation period – it is then when the whole world will see the Son of Man returning to earth as the glorious Conqueror.

How does this prophecy relate to Jesus’ and Paul’s teaching about the Rapture (Mark 13:26-27; 2 Thessalonians 2:1)? When will this prophecy be fulfilled?

a.  The believers who came to Christ during the great Tribulation (after the rapture of the Church), and who remain on earth,  as well as unbelievers from the nations "to inquire and seek knowledge" from Him (Isaiah 11:10) "will be gathered from the 4 corners of the earth" to the Messiah when He descends to earth with His raptured Bride, to set up His earthly kingdom in Jerusalem. ....the Shepherd will call and His "sheep" will come to worship in Jerusalem from all nations. (His bride who returned with Him will be reigning with Him...having finally come into the authority He promised.

b.  There will be believers and seekers from  all nations, including the believing Jews scattered throughout the world who will have been evangelized by the 144,000 Jewish evangelists who recognized Jesus as their Messiah after the rapture and during the great tribulation, whom scripture says "were sealed and protected from Anti-Christ's" destruction.( Rev 14)

c.  This is referring to Jesus' Second Coming, since Jesus does not descend to earth at the rapture, nor is He visible at that time to unbelievers. The Church's rapture will be an event which will stun those left here on earth having happened in a "twinkling of an eye" when His trumpet sounds from Heaven. The dead in Christ will rise and the believing Bride will follow to meet them in the air, then to celebrate the marriage supper of the Lamb in Heaven for 7 years, while the earth is experiencing God's wrath during the 7 years of tribulation under Anti Christ's wicked reign. (Believers born again before the rapture will be delivered from the wrath of God! Romans 5:9 but many more will be saved during the Tribulation)

d. No one knows the day nor the hour, only the Father, Jesus said, but the countdown for the "last days" began in 1948 when Israel was ratified once again as a nation. On May 14, 2018 Pres. Trump moved America's embassy to Jerusalem on the 70th anniversary of their rebirth, recognizing Jerusalem as their capital, and other nations are following. We could be called "up" at any time.

The Gentiles

Who else will be gathered?

The exiles of Israel and the scattered people of Judah.

Jesus and Paul both taught:

" He will gather His elect from the four winds." Mark 13:27

"Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to Him." 2 Thessalonians 2:1

These prophecies will be fulfilled on the last day.

Forum/List/Friends:

As I attempted to explain earlier, though not very thoroughly or complete, I'm hopeful this explanation of what Isaiah was pointing/directing us towards is that the Messiah/Emmanuel will bring in the age of spirit and witness, and only after the full number of Gentiles have entered into the Church will Israel/Jews become fully included in the fullness of Christ's body will the end come, and then only after the Church goes through it's Passover just like it's Creator, being betrayed, abandoned, slandered, falsely accused, mocked, teased, abused within and without, stripped naked, tortured, publicly humiliated, thrust out of the city gates of society, and this by all of it's own people, it's own brethren, by it's son's and daughters, and then crucified and murdered and dies, and then buried with good riddance, and then 3 1/2 days later raised back to life in a glorified state to become the purified, unblemished and spotless Bride of Christ. Christ's Bride willingly will endure it's Passover just as her lover Jesus Christ endured His Passover, and this for the sake of the love of the Groom and His Father. Passover yes, rapture no.

The following is a better and more thorough understanding which is very important for the truth is, Christ already reigns through the Church. . . "Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living." Christ's Ascension into heaven signifies his participation, in his humanity, in God's power and authority. Jesus Christ is Lord: he possesses all power in heaven and on earth. He is "far above all rule and authority and power and dominion", for the Father "has put all things under his feet." Christ is Lord of the cosmos and of history. In him human history and indeed all creation are "set forth" and transcendently fulfilled.

As Lord, Christ is also head of the Church, which is his Body. Taken up to heaven and glorified after he had thus fully accomplished his mission, Christ dwells on earth in his Church. the redemption is the source of the authority that Christ, by virtue of the Holy Spirit, exercises over the Church. "The kingdom of Christ (is) already present in mystery", "on earth, the seed and the beginning of the kingdom".

Since the Ascension God's plan has entered into its fulfillment. We are already at "the last hour". "Already the final age of the world is with us, and the renewal of the world is irrevocably under way; it is even now anticipated in a certain real way, for the Church on earth is endowed already with a sanctity that is real but imperfect." Christ's kingdom already manifests its presence through the miraculous signs that attend its proclamation by the Church.
. . . until all things are subjected to him.

Though already present in his Church, Christ's reign is nevertheless yet to be fulfilled "with power and great glory" by the King's return to earth. This reign is still under attack by the evil powers, even though they have been defeated definitively by Christ's Passover. Until everything is subject to him, "until there be realized new heavens and a new earth in which justice dwells, the pilgrim Church, in her sacraments and institutions, which belong to this present age, carries the mark of this world which will pass, and she herself takes her place among the creatures which groan and travail yet and await the revelation of the sons of God." That is why Christians pray, above all in the Eucharist, to hasten Christ's return by saying to him: Maranatha! "Our Lord, come!"

Before his Ascension Christ affirmed that the hour had not yet come for the glorious establishment of the messianic kingdom awaited by Israel which, according to the prophets, was to bring all men the definitive order of justice, love and peace. According to the Lord, the present time is the time of the Spirit and of witness, but also a time still marked by "distress" and the trial of evil which does not spare the Church and ushers in the struggles of the last days. It is a time of waiting and watching.

Since the Ascension Christ's coming in glory has been imminent, even though "it is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has fixed by his own authority." This eschatological coming could be accomplished at any moment, even if both it and the final trial that will precede it are "delayed".

The glorious Messiah's coming is suspended at every moment of history until his recognition by "all Israel", for "a hardening has come upon part of Israel" in their "unbelief" toward Jesus. St. Peter says to the Jews of Jerusalem after Pentecost: "Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, whom heaven must receive until the time for establishing all that God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old." St. Paul echoes him: "For if their rejection means the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance mean but life from the dead?" The "full inclusion" of the Jews in the Messiah's salvation, in the wake of "the full number of the Gentiles", will enable the People of God to achieve "the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ", in which "God may be all in all."

Before Christ's second coming the Church must pass through a final trial that will shake the faith of many believers. The persecution that accompanies her pilgrimage on earth will unveil the "mystery of iniquity" in the form of a religious deception offering men an apparent solution to their problems at the price of apostasy from the truth. The supreme religious deception is that of the Antichrist, a pseudo-messianism by which man glorifies himself in place of God and of his Messiah come in the flesh.

The Antichrist's deception already begins to take shape in the world every time the claim is made to realize within history that messianic hope which can only be realized beyond history through the eschatological judgment. The Church has rejected even modified forms of this falsification of the kingdom to come under the name of millenarianism, especially the "intrinsically perverse" political form of a secular messianism.

The Church will enter the glory of the kingdom only through this final Passover, when she will follow her Lord in his death and Resurrection. The kingdom will be fulfilled, then, not by a historic triumph of the Church through a progressive ascendancy, but only by God's victory over the final unleashing of evil, which will cause his Bride to come down from heaven. God's triumph over the revolt of evil will take the form of the Last Judgment after the final cosmic upheaval of this passing world.

Peoples of this world will rally to the Messiah when the banner of Jesse is raised.

The nations are all the people on earth.

The Gentiles will be gathered at this time.

The prophecy in Mark 13: 26-27 and Tessalonians 2:1 is confirmation of His return.

This prophecy will be fulfilled when JESUS returns to this earth.

Q7. (Isaiah 11:10-16) What does it mean that "the nations" will rally to the Messiah when he appears?
Gentile believers in all nations will rally to Him.  “They will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory.  He will send out the angels and gather His elect...”

Who are these "nations"?
    The nations are the Gentiles.

Who else will be "gathered" at this time?
The Jewish  remnant of Judah and Israel will be gathered from the four corners of the earth.

How does this prophecy relate to Jesus' and Paul's teaching about the Rapture (Mark 13:26-27; 2 Thessalonians 2:1)?

On the day of the Rapture, we will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory and He will send out the angels and gather His elect from the four winds, from the end of the earth to the end of the sky.

When will this prophecy be fulfilled?  When Jesus comes again.  We don't know the day or time, so be ready.

By "the nations" will rally to the Messiah means the rapture, the gathering of the children of God at the end time.

The peoples of Israel, the northern Kingdom and Judah, the southern kingdom will be reconciled and gathered unto  the Lord as one nation.

Other nations include all the nations of the world who have accepted the Messiah, our Lord Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour.

The teaching from Isaiah is similar to the teaching on the rapture by Paul. All Christians from all over the globe will be gathered unto the Lord Jesus Christ starting from those who had slept in the Lord and then those alive will be gathered and caught up with Him in the sky.

The specific date and time is known only by the Most High God.  According to the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, noe else knows the date or time.

Q7. (Isaiah 11:10-16) What does it mean that “the nations” will rally to the Messiah when he appears? Who are these “nations”?

Every country on Earth. God told Abraham back in Genesis that He would bless all the nations of the world through him. That prophetic word from God Himself was achieved through Jesus Christ's atoning sacrifice. After Jesus rose from death He commanded the apostles to preach the Gospel to all nations.

Who else will be “gathered” at this time?

This is a two-fold prophecy. As well as predicting the Messianic reign, Isaiah is also predicting the gathering together of the scattered Jewish people . . . the remnant of Israel. With the re-establishment of Israel in 1948 that part of the prophecy began to unfold.

How does this prophecy relate to Jesus’ and Paul’s teaching about the Rapture (Mark 13:26-27; 2 Thessalonians 2:1)?

I'm not sure that it does. The Rapture seems to me to be a different event . . . the gathering together in the air of the living and the dead in Christ to meet Him in the air at His second coming. This prophecy seems to be concerned more with the establishment of the Kingdom of God on Earth and the Messianic reign.

When will this prophecy be fulfilled?

I don't think we can point to a specific fulfillment. Like a lot of prophetic writings, this passage has a short term meaning and a long term meaning. Initially it has already been fulfilled, firstly when the exiles returned to their homes after Cyrus set them free around 580BC and secondly in 1948 when the state of Israel was re-established. The gathering together of all the nations will not occur until after Christ's second coming.

When Christ comes again, all who believe and realize who He truly is, will metaphorically come to Him with one focus, one mind, and one spirit to praise and worship Christ. Those "nations" will be Gentiles which, since the time of the early church, has mostly fulfilled the prophecy. This prophecy will be totally fulfilled when Christ arrives a second time and the people of Israel will finally acknowledge Jesus' true identity.

At His second coming, all will know it is Christ arriving "in the clouds" due to His glorious and all-powerful appearance. All the world will be gathered to Him and only Him!

It means that Jesus Christ upon his second advent will gather his people from the four corners of this world to him.  These nations include both  Jews and gentiles -- all the nations and peoples of the world.  All nations will bow at the name Jesus Christ upon his return.

This passage speaks to Jesus and Paul's teaching in Mark 13:26-27 and 2 Thessalonians 2:1.  Again, this prophecy will be fulfilled on the second coming of Jesus Christ.  Jesus will gather all of the living and dead in Christ to him in the sky on that day.

The remnant of Jews will be gathered at this time.

Mark 13: 26-27 also describes the second coming of Christ. The Son of Man will come in clouds with great power and glory and he will send his angels to gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.

The time of Jesus coming is unknown.

  1. The whole earth will gather to hear his voice.
  2. Even the Gentiles.
  3. God accepts people to His Kingdom only those who believe on Jesus Christ. And this is done when Jesus come from heavens to earth on the last day. And those who are at that time being true christians will Rapture. This is Prophesied by Isaiah and also stated in the New testament.
  4. Rev 16:15 Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.

The meaning of “the nations” rallying to the Messiah when he appears is that everybody will be included not just the elect. The “nations” is everybody. The others that will be “gathered” are the remnant of the people that remain his people.

This prophecy relates to Jesus’ and Paul’s teaching about the Rapture when the end times come. We will all be lifted up to join him.

Lesson 2  - 7
Verse 10 in the KJV reads: “On that day the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the
peoples; the nations shall inquire of him, and his dwelling shall be glorious.  On that day
the Lord will extend his hand yet a second time to recover the remnant that is life of his
people, from Assyria, from Egypt, from Pathros, from Ethiopia, from Elan, from Shinar,
from Hamath, and from the coastlands of the sea.  He will raise a signal for the nations,
and will assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather the dispersed of Judah from the four
corners of the earth.  The jealousy of Ephraim shall depart, the hostility of Judah shall be
cut off; Ephraim shall not be jealous of Judah, and Judah shall not be hostile towards
Ephraim.  But they shall swoop down on the backs of the Philistines in the west, together
they shall plunder the people of the east.  They shall put forth their hand against Edom
and Moab, and the Ammonites shall obey them.  And the Lord will utterly destroy the
tongue of the sea of Egypt; and will wave his hand over the River with his scorching
wind; and will split it into seven channels, and make a way to cross on foot; so there shall
be a highway from Assyria for the remnant that is left of his people, as there was for
Israel when they came up from the land of Egypt.”  (Isaiah 11: 10 - 16)

The signal which God raises from a christological point of view can hardly be anything but the life, mission and message, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, the cross of Jesus.  Isaiah in his time would be looking for the return of the exiles but we must look here to the message of Christ and his resurrection.  Jesus saw himself as the fulfilment of Isaiah’s prophecy for in his Nazareth Declaration he said: “When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom.  He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him.  He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:
‘The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news
to the poor.  He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight
to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, ....’      (Luke 4: 16 - 18)

We are all living now in the new creation of God as fulfilled by Jesus and we look forward to the wider fulfilment of the prophecies of Isaiah 10: 6 - 9.  For now Jesus with righteousness judges the poor and decides equity for the meek of the world.  Righteousness and faithfulness are his belt. (10.5)   This is the flag, the ensign around which we Christians are called to assemble as we love the God our God and our neighbour as ourself.
The nations are the gentiles of the time of Paul and in general the people of the world.  We are all called to rally around Jesus and his sacrifice on the cross.  This that for which we are called and told to go into all the world and preach the gospel to all.  For in Christ there is neither Jew or Gentile, nor slave or free, nor male or female, for all are one in Christ. (Galatians 3:28)
Isaiah 11: 10 - 16 is forward to the return of the exiles, to Jesus and his resurrection and also mildly referring to the new creation in Jesus whereas in 2 Thessalonians 2: 1 or Mark 13: 26 - 27 are looking forward to the totality of the new creation in Jesus as seen through the eyes of the early disciples.
Every prophecy is filled in God’s time.  A prophecy may e filled many and sometimes only partially.  Jesus’ prophecy of Luke 4: 16 - 18 is only partially fulfilled.  Though some peoples have been freed from oppression, many in this world are oppressed by poverty, by evil organizations and evil people.  We must work continually to do God’s work to free the oppressed, heal the blind and the sick, heal the broken hearted, preach the Good News of Christ to the poor and to proclaim the day of the Lord.
