The seventy elders prophesied when the Spirit of the LORD came upon them. The wisdom and the understanding that comes from the Holy Spirit gives those who receive it the ability to walk in obedience to God, and the ability to lead people. The burden was great on Moses and he needed more help. Some of the people, maybe all, were longing for the foods they were used to eating. They tired of the manna. They got cranky and complained in God's hearing and He got angry. When the Spirit of God came upon them, they prophesied. If the Spirit of God rested on them all of the time, they would be hearing from Him frequently and responding to him with faith, in obedience to His words. It is much more likely they would not be complaining about their circumstances. These scriptures answer why Moses wanted all the people to have the Spirit of God resting on them:
Numbers 11:26 Two men, however, had remained in the camp—one named Eldad and the other Medad—and the Spirit rested on them. They were among those listed, but they had not gone out to the tent, and they prophesied in the camp.
Numbers 11:27 A young man ran and reported to Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.”
Numbers 11:28 Joshua son of Nun, the attendant to Moses since youth, spoke up and said, “Moses, my lord, stop them!”
Numbers 11:29 But Moses replied, “Are you jealous on my account? I wish that all the LORD’s people were prophets and that the LORD would place His Spirit on them!”
Tuesday, November 27, 2018 - I also wish that all the LORD's people--including me, were prophets. I don't think I prophesy, but He talks to me.
