  1. Q1. (Luke 23:34) Who was most responsible for killing Jesus? What responsibility do you and I bear in this? In what sense was Jesus praying for us ? *Caiaphas, the scribes & Pharisees & Pontius Pilate were most responsible for killing Jesus *Christ died for our sins,as our substitute, to pay the penalty for our sins & free us from eternal damnation. *He was asking the Father to forgive us our sins because we do not know what we are doing.
  2. Q4. (1 Timothy 4:12b) Rigid, unsmiling orthodoxy can teach right doctrine, but cannot produce godliness. Why not? Why is a strong example of godliness in church leaders essential to a healthy church? *Because it is legalistic - it's all about keeping the law without the involvement of the Holy Spirit. * A strong example of godliness in church leaders is essential to a healthy church because people will do only what they see their leaders doing.
  3. Q3. (1 Timothy 4:7-8) How would you define "godliness"? What produces godliness in a person? How is godliness different from embracing a strict morality? *Godliness is living to please God. *Submission to the leading of the Holy Spirit produces godliness in a person. *Godliness is different from embracing a strict morality because, here, it is the holy Spirit at work within the individual, producing godliness with the individual's full cooperation.
  4. Q2. (1 Timothy 4:3-5) Why is performance of legalistic requirements so attractive to people? What fruit does it produce in a person's life? In what ways is this emphasis so different from the true gospel? *Performance of legalistic requirements is so attractive to people because it appeals to their senses of self righteousness. They feel so satisfied with their self righteousness. *This only helps to aggravate the inner corruption of a person's life. *The gospel's emphasis is on we becoming the righteousness of God in Christ through the new birth by the agency of the Holy Spirit working on our inside to transform us from the corrupt, depraved people that we were, into people conformed into the image of Christ. So, there's no self righteousness here. We have become the righteousness of God. The Spirit of God is the one working in us to produce fruits of the spirit that characterize us.
  5. Q1. (1 Timothy 4:1-2) Why does Paul remind Timothy (and the church) of predictions concerning widespread apostasy? What effect should this knowledge have on his ministry and the church's perception of the situation? *I think Paul reminded Timothy of predictions concerning widespread apostasy so as to prepare him for what he might meet at Ephesus & not be overwhelmed by it. * On the one hand, this knowledge should keep Timothy's ministry focused on the real issues to tackle at Ephesus. On the other hand, this knowledge should open the eyes of the church to the fact that these false teachings & false teachers are not a new phenomenon & therefore be on their guard against them by adhering to sound teachings by the apostle & those sent to them by him & by engaging unceasingly in fervent prayers .
  6. Q4. (1 Timothy 3) According to our text, do you see differences in qualifications between overseers/elders and deacons? What are they? *A little. * They both have basically the same qualifications although the elders are expected to have more since they are the overall leaders. *The elders are the only ones qualified to teach while the deacons have assisting roles in the administration of the church.
  7. Q3. (1 Timothy 3) Why are tendencies to anger, intimidation, force, and pride so important to consider in selecting church officers? What happens when you don't consider these factors? *Tendencies to anger, intimidation, force and pride are very important to consider in selecting church officers because no one in their right minds will want to associate with people with those characteristics. *When those factors are not considered, spiritual growth will be stunted under such leadership because he himself needs deliverance from the spirits behind such tendencies.
  8. Q2. (1 Timothy 3:6, 10) Why should leaders be observed carefully and tested before placing them in office? What should you be looking for during this period? *Leaders should be carefully observed before placing them in office to save the church from the controversies that might arise if the leaders are misfits & have character flaws. During this period, the following qualities should be looked for in the intending leaders: *Spiritual maturity *Emotional intelligence *Self control/ Self discipline * Ability to manage people & situations. *Creative & innovative abilities.
  9. Q3. (1 Timothy 3) Why are tendencies to anger, intimidation, force, and pride so important to consider in selecting church officers? What happens when you don't consider these factors? *These tendencies are important to consider in selecting church officers because they are works of the flesh & are inimical to well being of the church. *When these factors are not considered, the officers will scatter the congregation & the work of God will suffer setbacks.
  10. Q2. (1 Timothy 3:6, 10) Why should leaders be observed carefully and tested before placing them in office? What should you be looking for during this period? *Leaders should be observed carefully & tested before placing them in office in order to prevent exposing the church to issues & controversies that would be unhealthy & disastrous to the survival of the church. *Spiritual & Emotional maturity; moral rectitude which includes financial accountability.
  11. Q1. (1 Timothy 3:2-12) What kind of leader do you believe Paul is indicating for us with the phrase "husband of one wife"? Why is a leader's family an important indicator of leadership potential or problems? *A leader who is disciplined & in control of his home & is free of moral controversies. *A leader's family is an important indicator of leadership potential or problems because as the saying goes, you can tell a tree by its fruits .If the family turns out to be chaotic, then it's obvious that the leader has no leadership potentials at all.
  12. Q5. (1 Timothy 2:11-15) How should Paul's instructions about women teaching and leading in the church be applied in the twenty-first century? How do you support your view? *Paul's instructions about women teaching & leading in the 21st church should be modified in its application, with reference to Joel.2:28-29, which says : "And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit." *Since it's the same Holy Spirit that came upon all flesh, irrespective of gender,& said " ....your sons & your daughters shall prophesy", spirit- filled women, I believe ,have the mandate to preach & be leaders in the church.
  13. Q4. (1 Timothy 2:9-10) How did women dressing in fancy clothes threaten to compromise the church's witness in Ephesus? How do we apply the principle of Paul's directive in twenty-first century churches without instituting a new legalism? *Women's dressing in fancy clothes threaten to compromise the church's witness by drawing attention to themselves rather than Christ. *The principle of Paul's directive can be applied in the 21st century churches without instituting a new legalism through modelling & teaching i.e. we teach what we practice or do like our Lord Jesus Christ always did during his earth walk.
  14. Q3. (1 Timothy 2:8) What problem among the men of the congregation is Paul referring to in this verse? What is so serious about worshipping with the opposite of love in your heart? *I think Paul is referring to the many controversies stirred up by false teachers, which created divisions & bickerings among the members of the church. *Worshipping with the opposite of love in the heart is a sheer waste of time, because it is totally unacceptable to our God ,who is love himself. Hatred is a character of Satan.
  15. Q2. (1 Timothy 2:5-6) In the context of the salvation of all, why do you think Paul emphasizes the roles of Mediator and Ransom? In what way did Christ fulfill both these roles? *I think Paul emphasizes the roles of Mediator & Ransom in the context of salvation because they had been long predicted that Christ would come & assume the roles *Christ fulfilled the roles of Mediator & Ransom by dying as man's substitute on the cross &thereafter becoming the mediator between man & God,thereby reconciling us to him(God)
