God told the Israelites to drive out the Canaanites completely because they didn’t want the Canaanites to have any influence on them. The short-term results of them failing to do so is that the Canaanites were a thorn in their sides. They were always at war with the Canaanites. The long-term results is that the Israelites started to worshiping idols and losing God’s protection.
