Q3. Prayer for Daily Bread vs. Independence
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 8. The Lord's Prayer (6:9-15)
We think that it a weakness if we can’t be independent and have to ask somebody else for help. We seek to be independent of God because of our arrogance. We don’t want to ask anybody for anything. We should always be asking God for our daily bread so that we will be able to earn a living for ourselves. -
Q2. May Your Kingdom Come
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 8. The Lord's Prayer (6:9-15)
The sense that we are asking that the Father’s kingdom should come is when we accepted Jesus Christ as our savior. When we have been saved then the kingdom has come to us here on earth but that is nothing like the one we will receive when Jesus returns. This prayer should affect our lives so that we will live as if the kingdom has been put down here on earth. That way we will be trying to be doing the things that God wants us to be doing. -
Q1. Hallowed Be Your Name
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 8. The Lord's Prayer (6:9-15)
The way that we live and our words “hallows’ the name of Father when we are doing the things that He wants us to be doing. We don’t use the Father’s name in vain when we get excited or when we cuss. We should “hallows” the name of the Father when we begin to pray by being respectful to Him when we talk to Him. He is the one that is in control of the universe. -
Q4. Why Pray?
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 7. Giving, Prayer, and Fasting (6:1-8, 16-18)
God does know what I need before I ask him but it is for my benefit to talk to Him about the things that are bugging me. I can turn them over to Him. The difference that prayer makes is that we can have a peaceful heart after we have talked to God. We know that He will take care of us but it isn’t always in the way we want it to be. I don’t think that we talk for our own edification or encouragement because when we pray for others we can see that sometime they change. We have seen people that were on the death bed be healed and live a normal life afterward. I believe that this is all because of prayer. -
Q3. Secret and Public Prayer
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 7. Giving, Prayer, and Fasting (6:1-8, 16-18)
I think that one of the reasons that Jesus tells us to pray in secret is so we don’t get distracted by what is going on around us. We will be able to concentrate more on Him while we talking with Him. The public prayer in a church service that would be contrary to the spirit of Jesus’ instructions is one that is very wordy and keeps repeating the same thing over and over again. Flowery prayers hinder the development of disciples because they are not directed to God. They are directed to the people that at listening to them. -
Q2. Giving to the Poor
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 7. Giving, Prayer, and Fasting (6:1-8, 16-18)
When we give to the poor in secret that means that we are being influenced by attitude toward the poor. It helps to remind us that maybe someday we may need that help also. It will change our attitudes as the result of giving to the poor. The thing that keeps us from giving more to the poor is that we want to have more things for ourselves. -
The commands in this section relate to “performing for the audience of One” because we are to be doing everything in secret. Therefore no person will know what we have done and only God will know. The antidote for the chief sin pride that is addressed here is to do things for God and not for the people around us. The way that churches and non-profit organizations use this sin to motivate people to give is by announcing it to the world what a good deed that they have done.

In context verse 48 says we must be perfect is Christ was perfect. But we know that isn’t possible without God’s help. Perfection is taught here but we are to our best and as we mature we will get better at it. But at no time in this life on earth will we be perfect but with God’s help we can try to achieve it.

Q5. Defense against Evil?
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 6. The Spirit of Truthfulness and Love (5:33-48)
Yes, there is times that we must defend ourselves physically against evil men in order to fulfill this principle. Some examples is to defend myself again a person trying to attack me, or to protect somebody from being raped. -
Q4. Don't Retaliate
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 6. The Spirit of Truthfulness and Love (5:33-48)
If we were to assume that Jesus is teaching on retaliation and revenge rather than pacifism I would sum up his teaching as kill the bum before he has a chance to get to you. But that isn’t what he was teaching. -
The things that these examples have in common is we are reminded not to let those are opposed to us get under our skin. This is not aiding nor abet evil it is helping us to keep evil out. If we try to get revenge on those we think need it, we are not better than they are. These examples are just aphorisms or adages.

Q2. An Eye for an Eye
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 6. The Spirit of Truthfulness and Love (5:33-48)
The purpose of the “Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth” was to make sure that the justice that was dished out did not exceed the damage done. This law was to be administered by a court or by a judge but not for the individual. This was designed to govern judicial action. A personal action would be vengeance and usually vengeance will exceed the damaged done by the other person. -
Q1. Let Your 'Yes' Be 'Yes'
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 6. The Spirit of Truthfulness and Love (5:33-48)
The meaning of letting your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no is that we are to speak the truth at all times. We are not to use weasel words to get around answering truthfully. If we would obey thing command then our speaking would be truthful and our credibility would be impeccable. -
The thing that wrong with watching *********** is that it expects their spouse to do the things and that they see in the *********** pictures. They start treating their partner as a sex object and it leaves love out of the equation. Going to prostitutes is probably going to get you some kind of S. T. D. and then it will be transmitted to your spouse and then it leaves love out of the equation. The victim of this “victimless” activity is everybody that is involved in it.

Q2. Sexual Desire
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 4. Adultery, Lust, and the Spirit of Marriage (5:27-30)
When God created us with a good and natural sexual desire He also gave us the knowledge of the God-given sexual desire and the forbidden ****. We know when we have stepped out of bounds.
