Q2. Gospel Core
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 14. Resurrection and the Coming of Christ (1 Corinthians 15)
Christ died for our sins and was resurrected on the third day. As proof there are witness to event. -
Q1. Perseverance
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 14. Resurrection and the Coming of Christ (1 Corinthians 15)
We have to have faith in order to be saved. Even though grace has been given to us we still have to believe in that grace. The doctrine of the Perseverance of the Saints is so important for is to understand because in this world we can be deceived into believing in almost anything. -
Q3. Instructions
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 13. Prophecy and Ministry by the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 14)
Paul’s instructions to both those who speak in tongues and those who prophecy is to do it in an orderly manner. They should not interrupt the speaker and they should control their emotions. But the one speaking in tongues need to have an interpreter. I think that the way that we should hold meetings today to allow for the Spirit to inspire spontaneous contributions is to have house meeting or group meetings. This gives everybody that is gathers to speak in an orderly manner. -
Q4. Love Never Fails
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 12. Love -- A More Excellent Way (1 Corinthians 13)
Paul’s argument to contend that even the greatest spiritual gifts will become obsolete is so that they will put the gifts into the right context. He didn’t want them to think that because they have a gift different than other that they were superior to others. He stressed the permanence of love because that is one thing that can unites us with a perfect bond. -
Q3. When the Perfect Comes
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 12. Love -- A More Excellent Way (1 Corinthians 13)
I think that “perfect” comes after Jesus returns. I have always thought that and didn’t know that there was other interpretations. After I listened to your “Excursus” I still have that same belief. -
Q2. Growing into Love
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 12. Love -- A More Excellent Way (1 Corinthians 13)
I think that the ones that I have the most trouble with is irritability and the delighting in evil. Internally I do delight when somebody that I dislike is having trouble and when somebody bugs me it is hard for me to shut it off. Prayer always helps me grow because I am not as bad as I use to be but I am not there yet. -
Q1. Gifts and Selfishness
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 12. Love -- A More Excellent Way (1 Corinthians 13)
The results of the greatest imaginable manifestation of the gifts of the Spirit done without love is just a sounding gong. It means nothing except to the person doing the manifestation. It is possible to operate a gift of Spirit from a selfish or wrong motivation. That is what people are doing when they try to exploit others. I don’t think that you can the Gifts of the Spirit without the Fruit of the Spirit. The Fruit of the Spirit is a byproduct of the Gift of the Spirit. -
I am hurt by people who don’t use their spiritual gifts because I won’t be able to learn more about Jesus. When people use their spiritual gifts then there is unity in the church. We don’t have people trying to fill a spiritual gift that don’t have that gift but we need that gift to continue on as a church. If the church uses their spiritual gifts then the whole community benefits because we will be able to minister to the community.

Q3. Which Gifts?
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 11. Diverse and Unifying Gifts in the Church (1 Corinthians 12)
I think that God has used me in one of these nine spiritual gifts because there are things that happen around me that I can’t explain. Some people will see the light and I don’t know what I had said or done to make that happen. But I do know that whatever it is, it has built up the church. -
The purpose of spiritual gifts is to build up the body of Christ. The thing that happens when people don’t employ spiritual gifts for their intended purpose is that they rob the body of Christ of their ability to be built up. Therefore when the whole church starts using their diverse spiritual gifts then they are united and they can accomplish anything that God has sent out for them to do.

The kind of self-examination that is appropriate at the Lord’s Table is one that we can see the sins that we have committed. We are to confess and repent of our sins so that we can grow with the Lord. By confessing and repentance we can bring spiritual health and character change because we now have a clear conscience.

We are proclaiming the Lord’s death to all that are in the congregation at the time that we perform the Lord’s Supper. It is always important to bring up things that happened in the past so that we don’t repeat those things. If the church would shift proclamation then in time it would be forgotten and we would fall into the same sins as those that are not Christians.

The meaning of the saying “This cup is the new covenant in my blood” is that Jesus made an agreement with us as humans that he has given us a new covenant. The old covenant was the laws that God gave Moses and those were sealed with the blood of animals. The new covenant was sealed with the blood of Jesus. The provisions of the New Covenant is that we repent of our sins and that we believe that Jesus died for our sins.
-
The reason that we continually remember Christ’s broken body and shed blood is to remind us that we are part of the reason that He had to be sacrificed. It is our sins that he shed his blood for and we are to remember that. Otherwise we would probably forget that it even happened. I believe that the bread is the body in that Jesus said that it was his body and we are partaking in it. I believe the same is true for his blood.

Q5. Self-Discipline
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 9. Understanding a Leader's Passion (1 Corinthians 9)
The point that Paul is trying to make by using athletic analogies is that we have to say in the Word and keep our thought on the Kingdom. The place that self-discipline has in our effectiveness as a Christian is that they are always watching us and unless we have self-discipline we will not be able to get the Message out. When we look at what is happening in the world it looks like all the fun they are having we would like to join them. But our sell-discipline will keep us from falling into gross sin, such as idolatry. -
Q4. Becoming All Things
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 9. Understanding a Leader's Passion (1 Corinthians 9)
Paul “became all things to all men” so that he could win them over to the Lord. He was trying to get as many as he could to receive Christ. I thought that we was authentic in doing so. The difference between Paul’s chameleon ministry and mere role-playing is that Paul had set out to save those that had not heard about the Lord. -
Q3. Compelled to Preach
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 9. Understanding a Leader's Passion (1 Corinthians 9)
Paul didn’t have a personal choice about preaching because God had called on him to preach to the Gentiles. I don’t know if volunteers or bi-vocational Christian workers will receive a greater reward in heaven than those who are paid here in earth. The ones that are paid here on earth work very hard for the money that they get. It seems to me that they volunteer a lot of their time to the ministering of the congregation. -
Jesus commanded his disciples to receive support on their journey because they were to take nothing with them. They were to see who was really loved the Lord and were will to support the gospel that they were preaching. The scriptural obligation that Christian congregations have to do their best to support their pastors and other workers that the Bible says that they are to reap the fruit of their labor. Their labor is spreading the Word and their fruit should be material blessings. The accountability that the church board members will experience when they pay their pastors less than they should will be that they will have to justify themselves on the judgment day.

Q1. Right to Support
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 9. Understanding a Leader's Passion (1 Corinthians 9)
I think that the reason that Paul argue for the right of the apostles and other Christian workers to be supported is that there is are going to be others that will be following him and they are going to need the support from the Christian community. I think that if the missionaries expected the new converts to support him that they would think that they were in it just to get material goods.
