Q1. Growing in Maturity
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 5. Warnings Against Apostasy (Hebrews 5:11-6:12)
The way a person becomes mature is to constantly training themselves to distinguish good from evil. I take that is to be reading and studying the Bible. -
Q5. Being Made Perfect
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 4. Jesus, Our Sympathetic High Priest (Hebrews 4:14-5:10)
He was made perfect because he completed the mission that was set before him. -
Q4. Learning Obedience
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 4. Jesus, Our Sympathetic High Priest (Hebrews 4:14-5:10)
Jesus learned obedience from what he suffered because he took the sins of the world on his shoulders even though he did not sin. He did this in obedience to the Father. -
Q3. Coming Boldly
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 4. Jesus, Our Sympathetic High Priest (Hebrews 4:14-5:10)
We should approach the “throne of grace” with boldness and confidence because we have a High Priest that is sympathic to our cause and has been through everything that we have and even more. We have been promised mercy and we will find grace that will help us in time of need. The basis that God has to be able to offer us unrestrained mercy and grace for our sins while still retaining his justice as judge is Jesus Christ. This is his son that came down to earth for our sins and we accept him he will intercede for us. -
Jesus shares in our weaknesses because he was here in the person to have to go through the temptations that we have to go through. The difference is that he didn’t give into toughs temptations. I think that his temptations are the same as ours. I doubt that we have any more temptations then Jesus had. We know that Jesus knows exactly what we are going through.

It is important to hold onto our confession because we have to know what we believe in. If we don’t know what we believe in then we will be thrown around like the wind and start believing in what the world believes in. We believe in the one and only God and that Jesus died on the cross for our sins and that He rose again and is sitting at the right hand of God.

These two verses are warning us that if we don’t enter the rest that God has provided for us that the consequences will be devastating. The word is described as being all powerful and we had better take heed in what it is saying. The effect that the Word has on us is that we will want to do what God has asked us to do. That is the reason we need to continually expose ourselves to the Word of God so that we can stay close to Him and obey what the things that He wants us to do.

Q3. The Promise of Eternal Rest
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 3. Jesus, the Giver of Rest (Hebrews 3:1-4:13)
I think that the writer of Hebrews means that when we get to heaven we will be in the rest that was promised. But this will happen if we keep our faith in Jesus Christ. So when he says to make every effort to enter that “rest” he is saying to keep the faith. When we fall in to sin we don’t have to stay there if we have faith that the Lord will deliver us. -
Q2. Hardened by Sin
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 3. Jesus, the Giver of Rest (Hebrews 3:1-4:13)
We have to have faith in Christ because we haven’t seen him we can only see what he has done. So sin tricks us into thinking that we can do anything we want and there will be no consequences. The first time that we do that sin we find it is on our mind all the time. But if we continue in that sin pretty soon we start thinking that it is OK. When we talk over with fellow Christian what we have been doing they will see the sin and will advise you what to do to repent from the sin. -
Q1. Holding On to Faith
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 3. Jesus, the Giver of Rest (Hebrews 3:1-4:13)
I think that the writer is exhorting his readers to “hold on” to Christ is the faithful son over God’s house. We are of his house and He will watch over us. If we don’t then He will not be with us and we won’t receive our reward. -
The purpose of Christ’s death according to verses 14 and 15 is to free us from the fear of death which in turn destroys Satan’s power. The sense that this mission was accomplished is Jesus dyeing on the cross and the resurrection. We will see its final completion when we get to heaven. He will have no power there. The result in our lives from Christ’s accomplishment is that we don’t have to fear what man can do to the body because we know that they have no power in the life after death.

Q3. Bringing to Glory
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 2. Jesus, Who Tastes Death for Everyone (Hebrews 2:5-18)
The meaning of bringing many sons and daughters “to glory”, is that we are going to be with Jesus in heaven when the time comes. That is the most glorious thing that I can think of. Since Jesus died on the cross for us He knows what the suffering is like for incase we have to suffer also. We have one that understands what is going on. We can know that we can live free because we have Jesus that has done everything and a Father that really loves us. We don’t have to worry about what man can do to us because he doesn’t have the final call. -
The way that Christ “taste death for everyone” is that He died on the cross and was in the tomb for three days and it was there that he “tasted death for everyone”. The thing that was greatest is that He was resurrected. This is so dependent upon God’s grace because Jesus was his only son and God let him be sacrificed for our sins. Since Christ died for my blackest and most stubborn sins that indicate to me that I am going to be with Him when I depart from this earth.

Some of the ways that Jesus suffered during his life is that He had no place to sleep; he was always going about doing the Masters business. He always had to rebuke the religious leaders of his time. And one time they tried to stone Him but it wasn’t his time yet. Then when they took him to the cross He really had to suffer. Right now things are getting pretty bad. Some people can’t get jobs because of their belief in the the bible says. We are looked at bigots when we stick to our belief in the bible. Even the Supreme Court has decided against us. The value to all this is that we have to stay connected to the bible in order to survive all this. And if we live in such a way to avoid all suffering then we will become part of this world.

Q4. Miracles and Faith
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 1. Jesus, the Father's Own Son (Hebrews 1:1-2:4)
The way that the truth of salvation has been confirmed to me is through the Bible and by the word that has been brought to me by the preaching of the word. I have seen the miracles of God and have read about them. The same signs and wonders that have always been in this world help establish the truth of Christ’s ministry today. If I need to pick a portion of the Bible that have formed my opinion of the value of signs and wonders today it would be the New Testament and especially the four Gospels. -
Q3. The Phenomenon of Drift
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 1. Jesus, the Father's Own Son (Hebrews 1:1-2:4)
This world has so much to offer us that if we don’t stay connected to God then we will drift away from the gospel. The author is telling us that in order to successfully resist the tendency to drift is to do the things that the gospel tells us to do. Jesus described this phenomenon of “drift” in the Parable of the Sower by telling us that if we don’t stay connected to Jesus we will not be about to resist what this world has to offer. -
Q2. Son of God
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 1. Jesus, the Father's Own Son (Hebrews 1:1-2:4)
I think that the author’s description of the Son makes me think that the Son described is divine. The role of the Son in doing the Father’s will according to these verses is that He has authority and that He is exactly what the Father wants. -
Q1. The Idea of "Son"
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 1. Jesus, the Father's Own Son (Hebrews 1:1-2:4)
I think that author of Hebrews is using the word “Son” as a biological relationship to the Father. A Son’s words would have more weight than a prophet’s because the Father has directly taught the Father and he would know the Father better than any other person and know how he interacts with others. -
Q4. Church Discipline
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 9. Warning against Idleness (2 Thessalonians 3:6-18)
Exercising church discipline is a very tricky act to perform. We want the people to stay in touch with the church so that we can transform them. But if we discipline them to much they will go away and not get a chance to be transformed. The result of a thoughtful and appropriate application of church discipline is a healthy church. It will grow but as it grows it will have other problems. But the neglect of a church discipline is one that is always complaining and the church is not healthy. -
Q3. No Work, No Food
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 9. Warning against Idleness (2 Thessalonians 3:6-18)
I think that Paul’s rule would make a lot of people that are sponging off the system go and look for work because they would be getting hungry. They would do anything to get food. I think that the positive results of this rule would be less stealing, better family ties, and they would be donating to society. This rule would apply to all in the Christian community that could work but it would not apply to those who could not find work or are disabled. -
Q2. Example of Hard Work
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 9. Warning against Idleness (2 Thessalonians 3:6-18)
The sample that Paul set with regard to work was that he worked all the time that he was there and did not take food from his congregation. But as a Christian worker he did have the right to their support. He didn’t exercise that right because he wanted to be an example for them to follow. -
Q1. Sloth and Idleness
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 9. Warning against Idleness (2 Thessalonians 3:6-18)
The bible teaches us that idleness among those who can work but refuse will be a draw on the community. They will start to gossip because they have nothing to do and they and their goods will go into disrepair. Our Christian duty is to help those who can’t work because of some kind of illness or a debilitating injury. -
Q4. Perseverance
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 8. The Coming Antichrist (2 Thessalonians 2:1-3:5)
I think that perseverance is so important because we are entering the end times and unless we stay in God’s grace we will not get our reward. We can help one another persevere be meeting with them and having bible studies with them and continue to read the word of God. It is God grace who will redeem us and that is what I am counting for my salvation. -
Q3. Fearless Truth-Seeking
Old Jerry replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 8. The Coming Antichrist (2 Thessalonians 2:1-3:5)
The reason that people are so gullible that they will believe the Antichrist’s deceptions is because they don’t have the truth. They refuse to change because they think that this world is treating them so good. The reason that God gives them over to this deception is because they don’t believe in Him even though He is the one that created them. I think that fearless seeking of God’s truth is so important because He is going to protect us and will always be with us. If we don’t have His truth then we will also turned over to the deception. The preaching of the truth sets people free from the deception because they will know the truth if they will only internalize it.
