In defference to the many and several wonderful posts offered (thanks all) I'm going to suggest that "taking away the sins" is a key to sacrifice. It is fundamental to the Jewish context that a blood sacrifice was offered to God and that sins were taken away. Radical was the idea of a one time sin offering.
