  1. Q2. (John 20:3-9) What is the significance of the presence and position of the grave clothes in the tomb? It confirmed that Jesus miraculously slipped out of them leaving in the very position and manner they were folded around his body. Why do you think it was difficult at this time for Peter to believe that Jesus was raised from the dead? May be he was still in his confused and clouded mind as the result of the shocking events of the arrest, torture and the terrible memories of the crucifixion.
  2. Q1. (John 20:1; Luke 8:1-3) What do we know about Mary Magdalene? She was delivered of 7 demons and committed her life to going about with Jesus's team. She also supported the team materially being from a rich family. She was the first person to see the risen Lord. Why do you think a woman was given the honor of seeing the risen Christ first? I it was due to her commitment and dedication to to the Lord.
  4. Q5. (John 19:38-42) Who were Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus? They were members of the Sanhedrin and secret believers of Jesus Was it good that they were "secret disciples"? Given the hostile tendencies of the Jews to excommunicate a follower of Jesus from their fellowship, I think it was ok for these two to be secret disciples so that they would perform the role they did for Jesus's burial. Why is the burial account important to Jesus' story? It confirms that Jesus really died and was buried thus the resurrection was also a miracle confirming the prophesy. What risk did they incur by participating in Jesus' burial? The risk of being expelled and prosecuted by the Jewish leaders.
  5. Q4. (John 19:31-37) Why do you think Jesus died in such a relatively short time? I think He did so that the soldiers might not have to break his legs to hasten His death and thus fulfilling the Scriptures. What does the water and blood flowing from Jesus' side indicate? The water and the blood flowing from His side indicated He had died. How did it fulfill Scripture? His death fulfilled the scriptures that He would die on the cross for our sin.
  6. Q3. (John 19:30) When Jesus says, "It is finished," what does he mean? What mission(s) had the Father given him. In what way did he complete them? He meant the work of salvation of mankind as designed by God and executed by Jesus has been completed through His obedience to the Father, suffering, humiliation, pain and crucifixion.
  7. Q2. (John 19:26-27) What is Jesus' mother Mary feeling at the cross? Jesus' mother Mary certainly would have had a lot in her mind. She certainly felt grief, sympathy and compassion for her suffering and dying son. She probably felt some concern about her future welfare. Why does Jesus give John responsibility to care for his mother? Jesus knew that John would take care of his mother better than any other. What does this say about Jesus' values? Jesus the compassionate and caring son had his mother welfare at heart.

Terrible pain from scourging, crucifixion and humiliation.
  9. Q6. (John 19:7-15) What does Pilate fear when the Jewish leaders report that Jesus claimed to be the Son of God? What motivation is winning out in your life? He feared that he might have offended a god. What does Pilate fear when the Jewish leaders threaten to report him to Caesar? Which fear wins out? He feared loosing his job. This fear won out. What fears control you and keep you from serving Jesus fully? Several. So help me God.
  10. Q5. (John 19:1-6) Why do you think Pilate maintains Jesus' innocence and then has him brutally scourged? He wanted to show justice by releasing Jesus but the Jews were bent on killing Him so he had Jesus scourged hoping that the Jews would accept that and release Him. Why does Jesus allow himself to be brutally scourged and then mocked? (see Hebrews 12:2) He knew that all what was happening to Him was necessary so as to complete the work of His Father for our salvation. How much persecution are you willing to endure to accomplish the mission the Father has given you? Only as much as the Holy Trinity will give me the grace to bear without falling.
  11. Q4. (John 18:37-38) Jesus presents himself as the King of Truth, with a mission to testify to the truth. What is the danger when we disciples declare the gospel is absolutely true? Either there is a typo on this question or I don't just understand it. I guess what is intended here is what the danger is if don't declare the Gospel in its whole truth. If so, then I can we then end up crucifying again How do cynics like Pilate or people in our post-modern age react? People like Pilate are blinded by Satan and they just cannot see/ know the truth and will accept it. If people reject the truth we bring, what is the next step for us? We pray to God to open the spiritual eard and eyes to hear, see, understand and believe the respond in repentance and accepting the Lord.
  12. Q3. (John 18:29-35) What do you think the Jewish leaders charged Jesus with before Pilate? The Jewish leaders charged Jesus before Pilate for political offences- stirring up rebellion against the Roman authority and claiming to be king. If true, why would that be taken seriously by the Romans? If this charge is found to be true, Jesus would face severe punishment by the Roman authorities. What kind of king does Jesus say he is? Jesus however meant that He was the King of kings (not a mere earthly king). Where is the source of his kingship, according to Jesus? From God; Heaven. What is the danger to our gospel message when we politicize Christian causes? The Gospel is polluted, distorted, misrepresented and it looses its importance.
  13. Q2. (John 18:17-18, 25-27) What have been Peter's acts of courage at the arrest and in the high priest's courtyard? Peter's acts of courage had been confronting the arresting team by slicing of the ear of one of them. another act of courage was following Jesus along to the Chief Priest place even though at a distance. Why do you think he ends up denying Jesus? He ended up denying Jesus because of fear of being arrested too (I think). How would you rebuke Peter according to Galatians 6:1b? I will not rebuke Peter because I am not sure I would have done better. Has your courage failed lately? My courage fails from time to time. What should you do about it? I need to ask God to help out given His word that he has not given me the spirit of fear but of power, love and sound mind. 2 Timothy 1.7
  14. Q1. (John 18:1-11) What do you think caused the soldiers to fall back in the Garden (18:6)? What caused the soldies to fall when Jesus told the "I am he" was the awesome power of God in and around Jesus. Why does John tell us this detail? John recorded this to show the power that is associated with Jesus. Why does Jesus rebuke Peter for defending him with a sword (18:11)? Jesus rebuked Peter for cutting of the ear of the servant of the High Priest because Peter's action to fight back is contrary to the plan of salvation. Jesus'arrest will culminate to his death on the cross for the sin on mankind. Jesus is facing forces sent by hell. Why doesn't he resist? Jesus did not resist arrest because it is part of the processes that must take place for him to complete his mission, the salvation of mankind.
  15. Q6. (John 17:11b, 20-21) Why is unity between Christians so important? Unity between Christian is so important because it is the desire of our Lord Jesus hence his prayer for such unity as that between the Trinity. What is the model Jesus gives of this unity in verse 21a? The model of unity given by Jesus as already stated above, is that demonstrated by the the Trinity. What effect does true Christian unity have on our witness to the world? By our unity, the world will know that Jesus is really Lord and embrace Him as Saviour.
  16. Q5. (John 17:15-16) Is God's desire to immediately extract us from the earth, or to leave us here? God wants us to remain here on earth for now to continue to do the work Jesus did, serving and bring people to the kingdom of light. How is it possible to be "in" the world, but not "of" it, or contaminated by it? How do we achieve this? It is possible to be "in" the world, but not "of" it by refusing to conform to the pattern or lifestyle of the world. Instead, we are to be transformed continuously by the renewing of our minds through the word of God and power of the Holy Spirit.
  17. Q4. (John 17:6-10) In what sense do the Son and the Father "co-possess" everything? The Son and the Father co- possess everything because they are one. The Son is in the Father and the Father in the Son. What does that say about their relationship with each other? They are one and equal in relationship In what sense do we "co-possess" everything with the Father and Son? We are children of God the Father and the Son as well as joint heirs with Jesus Christ. Thus what belongs to the Father and Son belongs to us (me inclusive) How should that affect our values? The way we live? The realisation that whatever belongs to God the Father and Son is also ours should motivate us and boost our faith to stand firm and live godly lives.
  18. Q3. (John 17:4-5) What was Jesus' preexistent glory like? Jesus pre-existence glory was glorious. He was God, by him all things were made. What was his glory like during his earthly ministry? He actually gave up his glory to become man so that he could die for our sins. he was thus without any glory, a carpenter's son, not respected nor accepted even by his own brothers. Just like any ordinary man! How did his glory peek through? His glory here on earth peaked as he rose victoriously over death from the grave and resurrection. What is his glory like now in the presence of his Father? He is presently restored to his former glory where he is seated on the throne at the right side of his Father in heaven. Why do you think Jesus wants his disciples to see him in this glory (verse 24)? Jesus wants his disciples to be with him in heaven to see him in his present glory so that they will rejoice at last.

The work the Father gave the Jesus was to bring glory to Him by finishing the work of salvation of mankind by his death, resurrection and ascension to heaven. How did it bring glory to the Father? He glorified God by ensuring that the work God gave him to do was completed. What is the "work" the Father has given you to do? The work the Father has given as defined by Rick Warren in the Purpose Driven Life is to worship Him, be part of the family of the Lord Jesus Christ, grow to be like Jesus, serve others and bring the unsaved to Christ.

Does Jesus define eternal life in terms of duration of time? No. He did not define eternal life in terms of duration. What is the key element of his definition? The key element in His definition of eternal life is: "knowing God (as the only true God) and Jesus Christ (who God sent) How are you doing at present in Jesus' definition of eternal life. By the grace of God I am growing in the knowledge of God the Father and Son but want to know them more profoundly.
  21. Q4. (John 16:33) In what sense has Jesus "overcome" the world? Jesus overcame Satan in the wilderness, overcame death through the resurrection despite the scheme of the devil. In what sense can we "overcome" the world? We can overcome the world in the the sense that the power to fight and win our battles is available from God through the Lord Jesus and the Holy spirit who are with us and in us. They give us victory. Can we overcome Satan even though we are martyred in the process? (see Revelation 12:11) Yes. We may loose our lives (flesh) but the evil one cannot take our spirit that only God can.
  22. Q3. (John 16:32) Jesus said that he is not alone, that the Father is always with him. What does this mean to us when we are lonely? As the Father was always with Jesus and enabled Jesus to be bold to face persecution and death, the same God is our Father and His presence is with us. We should thus not be afraid. What should we do to deepen our fellowship with the ever-present Father so that we aren't as lonely? We need to come closer to our Father to listen to Him, talk to Him, worship and give Him praises and thanksgiving for what He does for us and for who is.
  23. Q2. (John 16:23-28) What does it mean to pray to the Father "in Jesus' name"? Is it okay to pray to Jesus and to the Holy Spirit? Why or why not? Is it scriptural to pray to a saint to intercede for us? Why are we allowed to pray to the Father directly? Praying to the Father in Jesus name means direct approach to the Father through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ sequel to His death and resurrection that reconciled us to the Father. It also means praying according the will of Jesus which is aligned to the will of God. It is okay to pray to Jesus directly too. He and God are one. Similarly, we can pray also to the Holy Spirit our guide, counsellor and friend directly as one of the Trinity. He lives in us and thus we can talk to Him as a Person.
  24. Q1. (John 16:12-15) In what sense does the Holy Spirit guide us into all truth. Does this promise apply only to the apostolic age to lay the foundations of the faith? In what sense does it apply to us today? The Holy Spirit guides into all truth by taking what the Lord Jesus says to us. He also as Pastor Ralph summarised, is: "...the Reminder, the Explainer, the Guide into all truth, to assist you to understand accurately the Father's words to your heart" The promise of the Holy Spirit is also for our generation to help interpret the Bible, to empower us with wisdom and discernment. He also guides and leads us in our Christian living.
  25. Q5. (John 16:8) Through what means does the Holy Spirit convict unbelievers? Is it our job as preachers or lay Christians to convict unbelievers or backslidden people? If not, why not? What damage do we inflict on people when we try to do the Holy Spirit's job? The Holy Spirit convicts believers in several ways: through nagging in one's conscience; through a Christlike way of living that draws others; through a Holy spirit power filled preaching/ prophesy; etc The Christian role is not to try to convict sinners of sin but be used by the Holy Spirit whose duty is to convict people of sin. When we try to do the Holy Spirit job of convicting people of sin, end up sending them further away from us and thus loosing the opportunity to be channels to be used by the Holy Spirit for the purpose.
