  1. Q2. (John 4:9-15) Jesus' words to the woman in verses 10-13 seem to imply that all people are spiritually thirsty. What has been your experience? Does the woman seem spiritually thirsty at this point? What caused her deep thirst to surface? What does this teach us about our own witness? I am spiritually thirsty and need to be refilled over and over. Though spiritually thirsty, she did not realise it initially. It was after Jesus has explained and caused her to realise her need for the gift of eternal life did she see her spiritual thirst.
  2. Q1. (John 4:7-9) Why do you think Jesus went against the social norms to communicate with the woman? Why do we hesitate to go against social norms to share the good news? How do we balance our need to obey God and our need to live peaceably in our culture? Jesus wanted to teach the disciples and all that he came to break the social norms barriers that would hinder the message of salvation to all. We do hesitate to go against the social norms to share the good news because we don't want to be accused for breaking the rules. We need God's wisdom to do so; therefore we should pray and ask him to help us.
  3. Q5. (John 3:36) Is it possible to believe in God's love and God's wrath at the same time? How does God's justice allow salvation, when what we deserve is punishment for our sin and unbelief? (Hint: the "substitutionary atonement.") Yes, it is possible to believe in God's love and Go's wrath at the same time. God loves us but his wrath is upon any one who does not believe and accepts the Lord Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. Our sin makes us qualify for punishment. But God's love makes a way of escape through the Lord Jesus Christ's payment for our sin on the cross. Our punishment is thus waived away when we believe in this salvation package and accept the Lord Jesus Christ as our Saviour. He has paid in full with blood, praise the Lord.
  4. Q4. (John 3:30) In what sense, in order to be successful in your Christian life, must you decrease and Christ increase? How can you facilitate the shift necessary for this change to occur? What steps might help you do this? I need to let go increasingly all my hold on my life and let Jesus Christ take over according to his perfect will and plan for my life. I can achieve this by surrendering my will and plans to him, asking him to take the lead while I follow.
  5. Q3. (John 3:29) How does John the Baptist find joy in Jesus' success? Do you find joy in the success of others who could be seen as competing with your ministry -- in your church or in your community or in your denomination? Why do you think some pastors seem to compete with each other? As a forerunner, John was happy to hear Jesus already baptising people as he anticipated. Yes but there are times I struggle with a tinge of jealousy. Pastors [some] are ,ore interested in the large congregation that will give them large offerings and tithes hence the competition.
  6. Q2. (John 3:26) Have you ever resented "larger churches" that attracted people from "your" church? What is wrong with this kind of possessiveness? Is it self-pity or something else? I have not really bothered. Jealousy and possessiveness is a common human behaviour. This tendency ignores the fact it is God who gives whatever he choses to give whoever he wants to.
  7. Q1. (John 3:22) What is the importance of Jesus spending time with his disciples? What is his strategy? How does Jesus make disciples today? Where is our time with the Discipler? How important is your time as a discipler, "hanging out" with people God puts on your heart to disciple? Jesus spent time the disciples so that they will hear, see and do the things he tells them. To learn by example. It is essential for a discipler to have ample time with the disciple for proper training.
  8. Q4. (John 3:16) Why is this verse so famous? What does it teach us about God? What does it teach us about salvation? Since "entering eternal life" is a synonym for "entering the Kingdom of God," what does this verse teach us about our destiny? The verse is so famous because it spells out the Gospel, the Good News about God's love that leads to the sacrificial giving of His only begotten Son for my salvation and that of mankind. Salvation is meant for every one [irrespective of race or tribe] but it is obtained by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. The verse teaches us that whoever believes in the Lord Jesus Christ will have eternal life, that is- to enter the Kingdom of God.
  9. Q3. (John 3:5-7) What does it mean to be "born of water and the Spirit"? What do you think "water" refers to? Why have you come to this conclusion? How, then, would you paraphrase "born of water and the Spirit" to best bring out the full meaning? To be born of water and the Spirit means that in humility we repent of our sin and acknowledge that our effort can not enable us to enter the Kingdom of God. That is, only regeneration by the Spirit of God can qualify us for the Kingdom of God.
  10. Q2. (John 3:3-5) What does "entering the Kingdom" have to do with being "born anew"? Which do you think is the best translation here: "born again," "born anew," or "born from above"? Defend your reasoning. Man is a decen
  11. Q2. (John 3:3-5) What does "entering the Kingdom" have to do with being "born anew"? Which do you think is the best translation here: "born again," "born anew," or "born from above"? Defend your reasoning. Man is a descendant of Adam, born after the fall. He can not enter the Kingdom of God and cannot please God nor inherit eternal life until he believes that Jesus is born of God and then accepts Jesus as his personal Saviour. That is what is meant by being born anew. To me, "Born again", "born anew" and "born from above" to me mean the same thing in principle, that is, being spiritually changed or renewed by God.
  12. Q1. (John 3:3, 5) What does Jesus teach here about the nature of the Kingdom of God? Do you think Nicodemus understands him? Why or why not? Jesus teaches that no one can enter the kingdom of God (have eternal life) unless he is born again (enabled by God) Nicodemus does not understand the new concept because he thinks of being born again in terms of biological birth but this is a spiritual issue involving the Spirit of God.
  13. Q3. (John 2:23-25) What is the problem with faith that rests solely on miracles? Is it true faith? What is necessary for it to develop into true faith? Did Jesus see these problems as a reason not to perform miracles? Such faith can easily fail and withdraw That kind of faith is not solid rock stable faith and therefore is not genuine. To develop our faith we need to trust absolutely with our without miracles manifestation and then accept or embrace the Lord Jesus Christ as the Christ and Saviour. Yes he saw that the Jews/ Pharisees were just looking for miracles but were not interested in his person
  14. Q2 (John 2:11-17) Apparently, Jesus was angry. Was his anger justified? Why? Is anger good or bad? What about anger gets us into trouble? Jesus' anger was justified because it was righteous anger against a wrong that was not directed to him as a person but against someone- his father and indeed God Anger can be good or bad depending on the motive of the anger as stated above. Righteous anger can get people into trouble as it did to Jesus just as unrighteous anger can do.
  15. Q1. (John 2:14-17) What was going on in the temple? Why was Jesus offended by it? What action did Jesus take? Merchandising was going where animals were sold and money exchange was taking place. Jesus was offended because the place of worship had become a place of merchandising. He made a whip of chords and drove the merchandisers.
  16. Q4. (John 2:6-10) Why did Jesus perform this miracle behind-the-scenes? Who was he trying to protect? What does the quantity of the wine tell us about Jesus' glory? What does the quality of the wine tell us about Jesus' glory? Jesus performs his first miracle behind the scene probably because he did not want to be famous now and wanted to face his ministry only. I don't know if at all he was trying to protect anyone. The quantity of the water- turned wine shows the abundance and riches of his glory and resources. The quality of the wine shows the quality of his nature and kingdom- glorious and depicts our heavenly home of gold
  17. Q3. (John 2:6-10) Why do you think alcoholics are quick to point out this miracle? Which is wrong: drinking wine or drunkenness? How can we avoid excesses and still enjoy God's good gifts? Because Jesus himself made wine out of water to be taken. Drunkenness is wrong and also believe a Christian should not drink any alcoholic wine because drunkenness starts from drinking just a small alcoholic wine. The difference is in the alcohol. Non alcoholic wine is what we should drink and enjoy.
  18. Q2. (John 2:3-5) Why do you think Mary pushes Jesus to solve the wedding host's problem? Are her words to Jesus appropriate? Would you categorize Jesus' reply as a rebuke? If so, why does he go ahead with the miracle? Mary pushes Jesus to solve the problem because she knows he can resolve it. I think her words to Jesus are appropriate In my culture, Jesus reply can be categorised as a rebuke but Jesus he knows his spiritual position as a heavenly child and not a mere mortal so his ministry is his priority and the timing must be right. He went ahead with the miracle because he knew that it will contribute to his ministry
  19. Q1. (John 2:1-2) Why are we sometimes "too busy" to spend time with friends and relatives? What does Jesus' attendance at this wedding tell us about him? How can we apply that learning in our own personal lives? I think we are sometimes too busy to spend time with friends and relatives because we do not quite appreciate the value of a strong family bond. Another reason may be laziness as we may choose to just hung around watching TV or engaged in other things not so critical. Jesus' attendance at the wedding indicates his commitment to cultivating a bond of strong and healthy relationship. We too (I in particular) should copy the Lord's example to spend time with friends and relatives encouraging one another and rejoicing (or mourning) with them as the case may be.
  20. Q5. (John 1:50-51) Which aspects of Daniel's prophecy in Daniel 7:13-14 does Jesus apply to his title as Son of Man? When will the Son of Man complete his ministry? The aspects of Daniel's prophesy the Jesus applied to himself was the one Daniel said "...I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven...He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshipped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed." (Daniel 7:13-14) The Son of Man will complete his ministry when he comes in his glory to take his own to heaven. This coming will be preceded by a trumpet blast by the Arch Angel and every ear shall hear the trumpet sound and every eye shall see him descend with angels.
  21. Q4. (John 1:45-50) How does Jesus deal with Nathanael's skepticism? What was the nature of the miracle? Upon coming to faith, what title does Nathanael bestow upon Jesus? Jesus showed Nathanael that he saw him when he was under the fig tree meaning that Jesus is Omniscient God. Jesus has revelation knowledge, an ability to know even hidden things. Nathanael declared that Jesus is the Son of God and the King of Israel.
  22. Q3. (John 1:40-42) What role does Andrew play in Simon Peter's conversion? Today, why do so many Christians substitute bringing a person to Jesus with bringing them to church? What might be the similarities? What might be the differences? Andrew introduced Peter to Jesus Christians bring people to programmes instead of introducing them to the person of Jesus. The similarity is that there is an introduction [to church and to Jesus respectively] The difference is that people taken to church may get into the church and enjoy [programmes] but may not have a personal encounter with Jesus
  23. Q2. (John 1:38-39) Why doesn't Jesus tell his inquirers where he is staying? Why was it important for disciples to "be with" Jesus? What does "being with" Jesus mean today? Jesus does not tell his enquirers where he because he wants them to follow him to find out for themselves. It was important for the disciple to "be with Jesus" so that they could learn from him and become like him in conduct and character. "Being with Jesus" means creating time for him for fellowship, reading his word and communing with him in prayers.
  24. Q1. (John 1:35-37) Upon whose recommendation did Andrew and another person start following Jesus? What did this recommendation cost the recommender in this case? Andrew and another person started following Jesus at the recommendation of John the Baptist. The recommendation caused John the loss of his disciples but this was in line with his earlier declaration that Jesus would increase while he [John] decrease.
  25. Q5. (John 1:33) How does John the Baptist's baptism differ from the baptism that Jesus brings? Baptism is a word that means "immerse, plunge under water." What does a "baptism of the Holy Spirit" imply about this event? John baptised with water but Jesus baptises with the Holy spirit Baptism with the Holy Spirit means to fill filled with the Holy Spirit and power
