Q3. Heart Circumcision
Jewell replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in #6. The Covenant of Circumcision (Genesis 17)
To have your heart circumcised is to have it cleansed. It is necessary in order to show our commitment to God. Our faith must begin in our heart and reflect from there to our actions. -
Q2. Significance of Circumcision
Jewell replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in #6. The Covenant of Circumcision (Genesis 17)
A covenant, a promise, a special relationship with God. It completes a two-way agreement or commitment. His immediate obedience shows his commitment to God. -
Q1. Walk Before Me and Be Blameless
Jewell replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in #6. The Covenant of Circumcision (Genesis 17)
Moral perfection is not possible, however he expects Abraham to be blameless - to honestly live a moral life to the best of his ability. I believe he expects as much from all Christians. -
Q3. Loving Deeply
Jewell replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in #2. Add to your Faith Goodness (2 Peter 1:5-11)
Agape loves seems to be the love that you give to those closest to you - that's easy. Loving those that are the hardest to love is really what counts and what matures us in Christ. -
Q2. A Disciplined Devotional Life
Jewell replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in #2. Add to your Faith Goodness (2 Peter 1:5-11)
A disciplined devotional life is important to me for consistency in my relationship with God, in order to have a well-rounded relationship, not one that goes to him only when I'm in need. I do this by reading his word, taking these bible study courses, praying and talking with Him, and I really enjoy songs of worship. -
Q1. Christian Virtues in Your Life
Jewell replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in #2. Add to your Faith Goodness (2 Peter 1:5-11)
Knowledge has been the easiest. Self-control has been the hardest probably because when emotions are involved, it's hard to see past that to the big picture and all the options. -
About my worth, it says I was purchased with something greater than silver or gold - I was purchased with the precious blood of Christ.

Q3. Judgment and Gospel
Jewell replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in #2 Living Holy Lives (1 Pet 1:13-2:3)
Guilt, knowing that we're not perfect, and our ability to rationalize just about anything even when we know it's wrong. Without consequences, there is no final judgment - without final judgment, there is no return of Christ - without Christ, there is no love. -
Holiness is living life as closely as we can to that which God asks - being obedient. I am holy now because I was made holy by Jesus' atonement. My biggest struggle with holiness is the feeling that it is unreachable - God is holy, how can I, with my weaknesses and failures, ever be?

Grace. It should inspire hope, self-control, and soberness as we show our commitment to Christ and our willingness to walk his path. When we don't expect Christ to return soon, we become lax.

Q57. Employers
Jewell replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 6.2. Children and Parents, Employers and Employees (Ephesians 6:1-9)
With respect, faithfulness, and integrity. A just wage is determined by the market - what the "going rate" is for the services provided, taking into account the extent of a person's experience in a field, equivalent educational level, etc. -
Q56. Employees
Jewell replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 6.2. Children and Parents, Employers and Employees (Ephesians 6:1-9)
Respect Obedience Sincerity of Heart As to Christ Not with eyeservice As servants of Christ Doing the will of God As in service to the Lord These attitudes can help prevent difficult work situations, however when we find ourselves in them, they are more easily disolved when we maintain these attitudes. -
Q55. Fathers
Jewell replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 6.2. Children and Parents, Employers and Employees (Ephesians 6:1-9)
Behavior that is self-focused, not centered on the intent of correcting the child, can embitter them. Training and instruction of the Lord means raising them in a Christ-filled home where we live the examples that Jesus gave us, where we teach them his commandments and share his love. -
Obedience and honor as adult children includes honoring, listening to, and caring for them. The exception would be those things that go against our Lord. Respect is difficult when a parent goes against God. I believe we can still honor a parent in this situation, but respect tends to indicate agreement with their actions and under some circumstances that is not possible. That's where forgiveness comes in. When we can't respect, we can still honor and forgive.

Strong desires can erode our faith and corrupt our lives because we let them become important. Those that can build our faith are a desire for God's companionship, His love, eternity with Jesus. These strong desires come about as we learn more (knowledge) about God or know God better. God's promises have no evil, therefore if we have evil desires they must be in conflict with what God desires for us. Evil erodes our faith as it erodes all good things. It is God's promises, our relationship with Him, our desire to please Him and the unquenchable thirst for His word that builds our faith.

Q3. His Own Glory and Goodness
Jewell replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in #1. Great and Precious Promises (2 Peter 1:1-4)
To be called by Jesus. God's glory and awesome presence builds in a me a desire for him to be proud of me and a desire for me to be worthy of Him. His goodness and moral excellence are the examples that I work towards as he molds me and makes me into the person he meant me to be. -
Q2. Everything We Need
Jewell replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in #1. Great and Precious Promises (2 Peter 1:1-4)
There are no boundaries - he provides all of our physical and spiritual needs in this life and eternity. Knowing God, having a personal relationships with him, is what sets us apart for receiving these gifts. -
Q1. Equal Faith
Jewell replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in #1. Great and Precious Promises (2 Peter 1:1-4)
It means that we have received the same kind of faith as St Peter. Received from God, as a gift, it is equal. -
Q53. Christ Our Husband
Jewell replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 6.1. Christian Husbands and Christian Wives (5:21-33)
As noted in the lesson, "The principles which underlie our marriages, also underlie Christ and his church: love, honoring uniqueness, and celebrating unity. We all must voluntarily submit to Christ, whether or not we happen to like it at the time." -
Q53. Christ Our Husband
Jewell replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 6.1. Christian Husbands and Christian Wives (5:21-33)
The principles which underlie our marriages, also underlie Christ and his church: love, honoring uniqueness, and celebrating unity. We all must voluntarily submit to Christ, whether or not we happen to like it at the time. -
Q52. One Flesh
Jewell replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 6.1. Christian Husbands and Christian Wives (5:21-33)
"He who loves his wife loves himself" because what hurts her, hurts him, what helps her, helps him. From Genesis, "the two shall become one flesh". -
Q51. Husbands
Jewell replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 6.1. Christian Husbands and Christian Wives (5:21-33)
Sometimes. There needs to be one person who makes the final decision. To be "head" requires a husband to be the source, provider, sustainer, source of unity, and source of growth. Husbands should love their wives as Christ loves the church. -
Q50. Wives
Jewell replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in 6.1. Christian Husbands and Christian Wives (5:21-33)
A wife should submit to a husband because only one can "rule" - otherwise there is anarchy. She should submit only to the degree that it is not in conflict with our Lord's commands. She should feel free to voice her views when they differ from his. She should not compromise her faith or conscience. -
Q4. Disciple Lessons from Hagar
Jewell replied to Pastor Ralph's topic in #5. God Speaks to Hagar (Genesis 16)
To obey even when it's hard. The hardest to submit to is the situation that causes the most pain, the one that involves those closest to me.
