Shepherds were outcasts, poor, lonely and I believe in most cases humble people. They traveled around a good bit, so the message of the Messiah's birth would spread. At nine months, Mary was not really in any shape to travel. It was cold and aside from Joseph lonely. No comfort from familair sources, home and family. He would have learned how people work and live. How to deal with people. He probably would have experienced people's emothion from good to bad, happy to sad.

Mary's response was "I am your servant, let your will be done." Her response was complete faith in the Lord. Mary was raised in a God loving home. Her upbringing provided a background for her beliefs. When we follow the Lord, we do so in obedience and faith.
