To me, the New Testament verse that sums up Isaiah 53 the best is I Peter 3:18; "For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit..." It tells us that Christ died for all sins once. That He died, the righteous for the unrighteous. That He brought us to God. That His died a physical death. That He was made alive by the Spirit. Glen

The punishment for sin is spiritual death and physical death. Spiritual death is separation from God in this life and eternity. Physical death seals the fate of the spiritually dead. Jesus Christ experienced physical death. Jesus Christ experienced separation from His Father.

Jesus Christ was a substitute for us in the sense that He took our sins onto Himself. He didn't just take our place in the punishment, He took our sins as His own.
