blezed
Q1. (Luke 13:19-21) What is the point of the Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Leaven? How would this be encouraging to Jesus’ disciples who had expected an instant Messianic Kingdom? How might it be encouraging to people experiencing smallness or poverty in their lives? 1) The point of the Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Leaven is to show that things may start out small, but in the end will be large. Small beginnings, large endings. 2) This would be encouraging to Jesus disciples who expected an instant Messianic Kingdom, by helping them realize that even though the Kingdom was small now, it would someday be very great. 3) It would be encouraging to people experiencing smallness or poverty in their lives because it shows that we should not give up. The seeds we sow today will grow great crops in its season.

pickledilly
Jesus taught and encouraged with these parables that what seemed small was destined to grow and expand into glorious greatness. The Jewish expectation of the Kingdom of God to be established on earth was not what Jesus came to fulfill at that time. This realization had to be disappointing to these Jewish disciples, at the very least. Jesus was giving just enough insight to build their sense of hope that Yahweh was still at work to completely bring His Kingdom into existence and fulfill all His promises to the Jews. Nothing was lost, it simply was not yet the time for what they expected. The principle of these 2 parables gives hope to any believer who awaits the fullness of God’s promises. That would include provision and release from the smallness and poverty of this world. God’s plans are far greater than that, and in Christ they are sure. Unimaginable riches of every kind and incomprehensible glory are in our future! The Kingdom of God is being built stone-by-living stone, step-by-step. We can only see the tiniest glimpse of the section being built during our brief lifetimes, but God sees the whole of it even now. Our confidence can rest in that. jacquie7
Growth in and of the Kingdom is a process that takes place gradually. The mustard seed is a very seed that grows into a large tree. Leaven is similar in that a very small amount can permeate a large amount of dough to produce a large amount of bread. The point of the mustard seed and leaven parables though a gradual process; is small beginnings bring large end results. This would be encouraging to the disciples because they had hope of something that began small (preaching of the gospel) would grow into something phenomenal beyond their comprehension. People experiencing small beginnings also have hope that the end result will be greater than they may have expected.
tgandy
The point of the Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Leaven is things start small and grow. We must be patient. Jesus disciple's expected a warrior. They got Jesus who conquered sin. Conquering sin is much "bigger" than fighting a war. The effects are much further reaching that a military warrior. "All good things come to those who wait." If one tries their best and prays God will take care of you. One example I can think of is my husband's cancer. We had complete faith in God to take care of us. We prayed His will not ours. He has had a bone marrow transplant and seems to be doing well. We are both ministers and put our completed faith and trust in God to do what was best for both of us.
Ernie's Son
A. In this case, we have a seed and a small amount of yeast that will become a tree and a large loaf of bread: "small beginnings" will become "large endings." The "influence" of the Kingdom may be small in the beginning but in the end will be great. B. The Disciples had to be discouraged when they took their expectations of the Kingdom and compared it with the small beginnings they were seeing. But when they heard these two parables, they would realize that the Kingdom would not be small far long. C. "Little is much if God is in it" sure makes sense. "For we walk by faith, not by sight" (2 Cor 5:7). "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" (Ps. 46:1). "I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust" (Ps. 91:2).
