The Levites and the priests were camped closer than the other tribes because the maintenance and the operations of the Tabernacle were their responsibilities. Why were the Levites and priests camped closer than the other tribes? The layout of the camp was given by God to Moses and Aaron. The twelve tribes of Israel were arranged in order of their assigned position and order of march and it the centre was the Tabernacle of God. This layout taught the Israelites that God is (or supposed to be) central to their lives. The Levites and priests were camped closest to the Tabernacle because they were given the responsibility of taking care of the Tabernacle and the furniture inside. There HAD to be an orderly way of organizing the camp otherwise no one could keep track of them all. When it was time to move camp they marched out in order of tribes as well. The Tabernacle was in the center because God wanted to be at the center of the lives of the Israelites. What did this layout teach the Israelites? I really don't know, apart from how to keep an orderly camp. Why were the Levites and priests camped closer than the other tribes? So they'd be closer to their work. It was the Levites' jobs to maintain the Tabernacle and it's furnishings as well as handle the sacrifices. Also, to protect the rest of the camp from approaching the Tabernacle. God was in the middle...their most valued article (the tabernacle) was in the middle, too. The wagon trains used to circle up for protection...there is also some sense here of protecting the tabernacle from possible enemy attack What did this layout teach the Israelites? The importance of God, his majesty, his reign Why were the Levites and priests camped closer than the other tribes?b'cuz they were the ones who maintained the tabernacle...but it has not been said and is probably also true that no one else wanted to get too close to God's presence because they feared God and knew his power. So in a sense no one else dared to be that close. Doesn't this make you ask: What happened? God's design was for God to be the center and to be the king and then Post-assension Sunday we put Jesus in the middle and Jesus as King. Even Jesus taught the disciples to pray: Thy Kingdom come (God's kingdom) OK.. so Jesus and God are one in the same but I wonder if we are amiss a bit...focusing on Jesus when Jesus came to lead us to God. Why were the Levites and priests camped closer than the other tribes? The formation of the camp represented the fact that God was in the middle, or "midst" of the people. The twelve tribes were situated according to their marching orders. The circling of the camp by the tribes was indicative of the protection order of the camp. When not moving, the circling represented protection. I think the Israelites learned that God should be the center of everything, and all His people should work together for the greater good of the camp. The Levites were closest to the temple, because they were resopnsible for making sure that everything was where it should be-custodians, if you will. They saw to it that God's requirements for the make-up of the temple, and all the measurements and implements required were meeting God's standards. HUGE Responsibility! He is so specific on details and using exact words, What a God we serve every tribe had there specific duty concerning the Tent of Meeting and what is so amazing to me is that the very presence of God is in the center of His people, now that is what I call loving a people that could be so out of control; this applies to us Gentiles also, Everyone has something to do for the body of Christ, I have always said that the person taking the garbage out is just as important as the highest elder in the church. How could you worship and pray to Christ Jesus over the smell of garbage in the house? The most important Jew where the Levites because they prepared the offerings and set up and took the tabernacle down and actually carried all of this from place to place. He has an exact and perfect way of doing things for the peoples own good. He had exact instruction and an exact order of things and ways to carry it out. It wasn't for the people to question, but to obey. It was for meaningful lives in meaningful relationship with Him. In the same way today, we are to take instructions from Him and will live better, more meaningful lives through Him. The layout taught the people their place and purpose, that God has a specific design, and that He was in the midst (the very center) of them. The Levites and Priests were camped closer to the middle because they were chosen by God to be there, but they were also instructed to be more ceremonially consecrated and declared holy in their service to the Lord. The Levites would take down the Tabernacle and go first with their tribes. The Tabernacle was in the center of their camp. Therefore, God wanted to be in the center of each Israelite's life and worship. The Levites were the ones who were to take care of the Tabernacle, that is, setting it up and taking it down. Yahweh was the King of Israel. What did this layout teach the Israelites? That God was the centre of their nation. Why were the Levites and priests camped closer than the other tribes? For the practical reason that they were responsible for the Tabernacle and its furniture and therefore needed to be close at hand to fulfill that responsibility. All their camps face the tabernacles, on all sides. They all face the center, which is where God dwells in their presence. They are to move in the order of their camps when the time comes to do so. The layout should have spelled out the revelation that God is their center, both physically and spiritually. Also, that God is a God of order and He expects things to move with purpose and discipline. The Levites and priests camped closer because they were the caretakers of the tabernacle and were the ones called to stand in His presence and prepare sacrifices. He does nothing without plan and purpose. I notice that the layout is in the form of a cross, with His presence at the very hub or center. Though the cross was unheard of at the time, it's a type and shadow of the crucifixion that would save all mankind, if received. It was hinted at again when the bronze serpent was placed upon the top of a wooden pole, and anyone who had been bit by the serpent, would be saved upon looking up at the serpent. God is always revealing Himself to His creation whether in a blazing sunset, a newborn baby, His universe and it's perfect clock-like precision....and even in the shape of this encampment. What did this layout teach the Israelites? It was designed to teach them that He is the One to look to for everything. Their lives and encampment revolved around Him in a precise design to demonstrate order, function, place, privilege (the Levites and priests), etc. Though the tribes had differing strength and numbers and therefore differing duties and tribal offerings, they were ranked in such a way that each tribe had equal honor and access to the Altar....just as we have today....God is no respecter of persons, no favorites. We all have equal honor and access to Him. Why were the Levites and priests camped closer than the other tribes? They were the assigned ministers unto Him. They attended to all of the tabernacles functions. We can look at the "picture" and see our place as believers, near to His heart and Presence, dependent upon Him for everything....and now He tabernacles within each one who is HIS, in our "temples". The Levites and priest who were responsible for serving in the Tabernacle were located closest for that reason. That they were to keep God in the center of their lives, their thoughts, their beings. They were His people and He lived among them. They were special to Him. This was a forward of Jesus living among the Israelites, but what a difference. No pomp and ceremony, no gold and silver, just a perfect example of humbleness and love. 3. The priests served in the temple so needed to be close, and the Levites were honored to be responsible for the tabernacle and its furnishings. The camp of Israel in the wilderness seems to have been quadrilateral, although some have supposed it to be round or triangular (Numbers 2:1). The camp in the wilderness was furnished with ensigns and standards--the family ensign ('oth), and a standard (deghel) for the group of tribes occupying each of the four sides. The sons of Levi stood between the sanctuary and the other tribes to represent the fact that Jesus stands between God and us so that His wrath falls on them before it falls on us. But the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there will be no wrath on the congregation of the sons of Israel. The camp of the Israelites laid out as it was because it was God's commandment to be that way since God the Great King chooses to live in the midst of his special people. The very organizaton of Israel's camp reflected this truth. God presenc dwelt in the tabernacle. The priests and Levites were camped closest because each clan of Levites had its own responsibilites for the tabernacle and its furniture. This lay out taught the Israelites to count and pay respect to each clan and their ranks of each tribe, i.e. the 12 descendants from Israel, by starting from Reuben to the last of the twelveth.While the Levites were not included to the census. Levites and priests are camped closer for God said that Levites are His because every first-born is His.
