Law was meant to exist to make us aware of wrong so we would stay away from it. It also existed so there was a way to identify wrong doing. The law also existed to point us to faith. Since faith in Christ is the only hope we have of true freedom.

The law isn't meant to justify us. We are justified by faith. It is through the law, which leads us in a sense, to the faith (in the Messiah).

The purpose of the law was to restrain fallen human nature, to make wrongdoing a trespass and to point to Jesus.,

No, it was not intended to justify a person.

The law restrains by making people aware of what is not right. Same as the laws we have today. They restrain people to some degree. Though things are bad these days, they could be worse.

The law shows us where we haven't hit the mark. Like your term regarding a schoolmaster teaching us--I once heard (I really like this) that the law is a mirror that shows who we really are!!

Q4. (Galatians 3:19-25) What was the purpose of the law? Was it intended to justify a person? In what ways did it restrain sin? In what ways did it expose sin?

The purpose of the law was to restrain (sin) and reveal (sin).

It was not intended to justify a person because we cannot keep the law.

If you sinned there were painful consequences.

It showed us the sin in us.

We were therefore in a helpless state unless someone saved us who is Christ our Savior.

God Bless!

Jen

What was the purpose of the law?

Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, providing guidelines revealing God's holy standard.

To bring under control, curtail fallen human nature; to make wrongdoing a legal offense, and; to point us to faith in the Messiah as our only hope.

Was it intended to justify a person?

No, the law agitates man's intrinsic rebellion by way of revealing a standard, if acknowledged it shows us clearly our need for salvation in Christ Jesus.

The Law be it Ceremonial, Moral or Civil saved anyone, just as the serpent on the rod didn't save the people in the desert. The serpent on the rod was a conduit, an instrument if look upon with the correct intent pointed to God. The Law is likewise, it will not save but if looked upon with the correct intent it will point to Christ. We as children of the Most High do not need to keep the Ceremonial Laws Jesus has fulfilled what is required and He will upon His return. The Moral Law are standards that convey right standards to live by, Christ did not do away with them, they want save us, however they provide godly guidelines to live by. The Civil Law from the OT principles as culturally applicable can be good principles to consider and possibly to adapt. Again none of these save anyone, they do not justify, sanctify, nor do they glorify. Christ alone does that, we obtain salvation by grace through faith.

In what ways did it restrain sin?

The law in my opinion did not restrain sin, if adhered to it allowed an individual to be within an acceptable standard of conduct. If not adhered to and an individual knew of the standard they knew that they were not within the acceptable standard. Paul in Romans paraphrasing said, "If it were not for the Law he would not have known what sin was."

In what ways did it expose sin?

It reveals acceptable and unacceptable behavior, conduct, and actions desired by God.

The purpose of the law.....intensifies our humanness.....the gift of hope comes from Our Lord Jesus Christ and the spirit of Truth Leads us to take responsibility for our sin, yet giving us the strength to know we cannot do any of this.....resist sin.... on our own ....it is through Our Lord that we can live.

Q4. (Galatians 3:19-25) What was the purpose of the law?

The purpose of the Law was to disclose and expose to men/women their guilt and transgressions against God.....to make men/women more conscious of the "sinfulness of sin".

Was it intended to justify a person?

No! The Law cannot justify, but only condemns. There is no hope or redemption in the Law because if you break one you've broken them all and are therefore cursed.

In what ways did it restrain sin?

The Law restrained, in the sense that it made one conscious of what is unacceptable to God. It didn't prevent sin, but makes men less prone to want to sin. The trouble with being sin conscious, is that the more we focus on it, the more we sin!

In what ways did it expose sin?

The Law is like looking into a mirror and seeing "the truth of who we are" in our fallen nature, in minute detail, and how far apart we are from God's Holiness...

How I thank the Lord for GRACE and that He set us free from the Law of sin and death!

Q4. (Galatians 3:19-25) What was the purpose of the law? Was it intended to justify a person? In what ways did it restrain sin? In what ways did it expose sin?

The purpose of the law was to show what sin was. To point out wrong doing and to attempt to restrain people from living outside the confines of right and wrong.

Was it intended to justify a person? NO!

The law pointed out what was sin in God's eyes and what was not. Those who cared to be obedient to God were restrained by the law given to them.

The law exposed sin by showing what was right and wrong and convicted those living outside those boundaries.

Q4. (Galatians 3:19-25)

What was the purpose of the law?

Was it intended to justify a person?

In what ways did it restrain sin?

In what ways did it expose sin?

Paul states that the law had an essential part to play in the purpose of God. Its function was to convince us of the need for salvation. It in itself does not bring about salvation, we need Jesus for that. Another function Paul mentions is that it exposes our sin – making us aware of our own sinfulness and our rebellion against the will and authority of God. It makes us acutely aware of our unworthiness and the need of the gospel and for Christ to set us free from the bondage of sin. All the law could do was show us our hopelessness and impress on us that salvation could only be by the free grace of God.

The Law was given by God to an angel through a mediator.(Moses) In Old Testament the law did not save nor justify. The only way to justification was through faith, just as in the New Testament. King David was saved after he had broken the law ( yet God redeemed him),it wasn't until he realized that he also broke the Fathers heart, he had not only sinned against God's law ,he sinned against GOD. It was through his faith God justified him..The law was meant to expose human's sinful nature. It was given as a sort of 'check list' to identify good from evil. It was given as a temporary solution to a permanent problem, SIN! The law was given to provide awareness of our transgressions.. In no way did it justify sin or exonerate the sinner from his sins.

Christ is the only redeemer. The sovereign deliver! The New Testament makes it very clear that as believers in Christ we are no longer under the Mosaic law. Does that mean that we can be sinful in nature, NO, we will be guided by the Holy Spirit into the righteousness of God through grace and faith.. The blood of Jesus Christ makes this possible. After we have been delivered from the law, through Jesus Christ, to place ourselves once again under the law is a sin. It is "Falling from Grace". It is abandoning God's promise to Abraham that a seed would be sent to save all of mankind once and for all..The seed of course is Jesus Christ..

Q4. (Galatians 3:19-25) What was the purpose of the law? Was it intended to justify a person? In what ways did it restrain sin? In what ways did it expose sin?

1. To restrain man from sinning

2. To make wrong doing a legal offence

3. To point us to Christ the Messiah through whom we can be justfied by faith

It restrained sin in the sense that people restrained themselves from commiting sin to avoid the punishment that would be meted on the person who sinned.

Without the law one would not have known what murder, adultry etc meant.

(Galatians 3:19-25) What was the purpose of the law? The law was a schoolmaster to show mankind sin until the Messiah came. Once the Messiah came, mankind could now be justified by faith.

Was it intended to justify a person? No. Only faith in Jesus Christ could do that.

In what ways did it restrain sin? They knew they needed to be holy in order for the God to dwell among them, so the law restrained them from doing ungodly acts such as idol worship.

In what ways did it expose sin? It exposed sin by making them aware of what sin was. Paul said I would not have known sin.

Q4. (Galatians 3:19-25) What was the purpose of the law? Was it intended to justify a person? In what ways did it restrain sin? In what ways did it expose sin?

4.a. The purpose of the law was to restrain fallen nature from sin, that sin might be recognized as sin, and that it was our school master to bring us to Christ that we might be justified by faith.

b. The law was never intended to justify a person because it could not change their character or justify them before God, only the Spirit can.

c. It restrained them because the law pointed out their sin and if a Holy God was to dwell in their midst, they had to be holy.

d. It showed them clearly their sin, For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. We cannot keep the law, we all need a Saviour. The law cannot impart life, only the Spirit which is sent by the Messiah can do that.

Q4. (Galatians 3:19-25) What was the purpose of the law? Rom 7:7

Romans reveals God's LAW is not sinful, it is HOLY, its purpose was and still is to be a light before our path, showing us what sin is.

When God gave the LAW to his covenant people Israel, its purpose wasn't for them to fail, its purpose was to show them how to be a holy people.

The results to its purpose is not met in the law, it is met in our will, choose today whom you “WILL” serve.

God gave the law with the purpose that mankind would choose to hide God's law in their heart, with the purpose that we MIGHT NOT sin against him, I think the Psalmist speaks to its purpose = Psalms 119:10 with my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.

Was it intended to justify a person?

When God made his everlasting Covenant with Israel, he also gave to them 613 laws to follow and live by; these laws were not given as a means to justify them, for its intended purpose was that they would know how to have fellowship with God and with each other, that they would be blessed.

The Scriptures, the Old Testament has always made it clear, those who are called a FRIEND OF GOD are those who are obedient to his laws, obedience not coming from keeping the LAW, but from the heart of a man whose heart’s desire is TO DO SO.

If the laws intended purpose was to justify a person, King David would have been in big trouble as he broke God's laws, the law brought judgment, justification came to King David when he realized it wasn't the law that he sinned against - it was God.

King David's heart was torn as he came to the realization that he sinned against the God he had placed his faith in, the God he sought to do his will, it was because of God's mercy that justification came to King David, God saw the repentant heart of David, a heart crying out for forgiveness, a heart that desires to follow after God's leadership.

It has always been about our hearts desire that pleases God - The promise of the Christ’s coming is the promise of a new heart that will be given not just to Israel, but to the Gentile's also, a heart like King David’s, a heart’s desire to follow after God's leadership, his laws.

In what ways did it restrain sin, and in what ways did it expose sin?

The law doesn't restrain sin, it exposes it, it exposes us to an important fact - we in the flesh cannot please God, it is because of God’s righteous judgments that our soul gives praise to God, we who are in Christ are not in the flesh, the law has shown us, we who are in the Spirit are no longer debtors to the flesh, but we are to restrain the flesh, and it is through the Spirit that we are able to mortify the deeds of the body, so that we may live.

The law was never intended to justify a person. By codifying what was expected of God’s people, it both restrained and exposed sin. It was intended to make them and us conscience of sin and led us to depend on God to deliver us from sin.
