crissy464
God had wanted David to become king along time ago when he was young The spirit of the Lord has departed from Saul and an evil spirit for the Lord tormented him. Saul couldnt be king because he disobeyed a direct command that God had given him through the prophet Samuel. Saul was rejected as king not specifically because he offered sacrifices, but because he disobeyed a direct command that God had given him through the prophet Samuel. David became a great king because he listened to God and obeyed His commands. He led the Israelites to victory against their enemies and brought them into the Promised Land. Irmela
Q3. (1 Samuel 16:13) What is the significance of Samuel anointing David? What is the significance of the Holy Spirit coming upon David? How does this explain his success? How is the Holy Spirit upon us vital for our own success as disciples? Samuel had anointed Saul as king (1 Samuel 10). Saul had failed the test of obedience, not only once, so God had rejected his line to continue as kings. Samuel mourned . It was very difficult for him to get past this fact. It was thus important that it was not usurped by someone but that he himself was again used to anoint the man God had chosen. It was God's chosen people David was called to lead and reign over. In a human capacity to judge and protect and make decisions as how to protect the land and people against invaders . It was important that the Holy Spirit come upon him and empower him. This was not a task that could be accomplished successfully without the Holy Spirit's guidance. Many years lay ahead of him before he would finally be king. As the youngest son in the family, his role would normally not have had much significance. Now that the prophet anointed him, his role was significantly changed. Later in dangerous times when his family was not safe he was the one to make decisions as to how to take care of them. His role as leader was accepted. David loved the Lord and when he sinned and he was confronted he broke down and pleaded with God to forgive him. The Holy Spirit was not quenched. It is very important to be led by the Spirit because He reminds us of what is said in God's Word. He guides us and teaches us.

He was moving in the will of God How is the Holy Spirit upon us vital for our own success as disciples? I think the HS guides us so we end up doing what God wants, rather than what we think is best. PaulM
Samuel is the Lord's servant and the Lord's instrument to anoint David physically as God anoints him spiritually. God empowers David with His presence. God the Holy Spirit is present and leads David into leadership. I need to be fully aware that God has anointed me with His presence--the Holy Spirit in me and upon me to lead me in my ministry!
Krissi
Anointing is frequently done in charismatic groups. I recently attended a weekend-long conference and every participant was anointed as they walked through the door. In a way, this cheapens the experience. David's anointing was powerful, in contrast. It set him on a life path -- it determined the trajectory of his future and gave him the power to accomplish what God had tasked him to do. It was a big deal. Anointing changed David. What is the difference, then, between the anointing all of us got at the conference and that of David? Are not all Christians given the Holy Spirit as an indwelling presence at salvation? If so, then what does the anointing do -- supercharge what's already there? release what's there but not fully used? Give more of the spirit than already is possessed? David's life seems to have been changed by the presence of the Holy Spirit which came upon him at his anointing. I want this. I want this sort of deep, constitutive change that the Spirit can bring, anointing or not. I want the power to carry out a calling and assignment ... I want a calling and assignment, too. But, frankly, after being anointed a couple weeks ago and on other occasions, I don't think that what is done in charismatic circles has much to do with the sort of anointing David experienced. Also, there's that sticky problem that the anointing can be withdrawn, as happened to Saul. That's frightening. God gives ... and takes which means that the anointing is contingent on our behavior. We have to be good/obedient enough for the Spirit to remain in us. Recall that David was forgiven for his HUGE mistakes, but Saul was not. God took Saul's spirit away ... --- I'm back. After about five minutes I couldn't get this thought out of my mind: Hebrews 13 promises this: 'I will NEVER leave you nor forsake you." But the Spirit left Saul! God withdrew it from him. Can we have the confidence, as the verse goes on to say, that "The Lord is my helper ... I will not be afraid." I think we can. I'm not sure the Spirit left Saul, but only that he lost his anointing. Thus, the anointing isn't the same as the Spirit, but is the Spirit's work directed toward a specific calling. Saul lost his calling, or the power to do his calling. He lost his kingship. He did not lose the Holy Spirit. I hope this is right.
Nicolaas A.P. Mostert
Q3. (1 Samuel 1:13) What is the significance of Samuel anointing David? Samuel's anointing is much more significant spiritually than any political anointing. What is the significance of the Holy Spirit coming upon David? The Spirit of the LORD came upon David in power How does this explain his success? The young man had been a harp-player and songwriter. Now he becomes an anointed, prophetic songwriter and the "sweet singer of Israel" (2 Samuel 23:1). The boy who has courageously defended his flock against the lion and the bear, now becomes the mighty warrior who defends his country against giants and Philistines (17:37). The young man who has shepherded his father's flock to find green pastures and still waters (Psalm 23:2), now becomes the shepherd[35] of a nation as its king -- all by the powerful Holy Spirit who has come upon him. How is the Holy Spirit upon us vital for our own success as disciples? By obeying the HOLY SPIRIT, as GOD's word said the if you are a son of GOD you are led by the SPIRIT of GOD. LadyT
Q3. (1 Samuel 1:13) What is the significance of Samuel anointing David? He marked David in God's name, visible by his family and detectable by those who come in contact with him. What is the significance of the Holy Spirit coming upon David? God is with David. How does this explain his success? Because David has been marked, nothing can touch him. Even with Saul's relentless pursuit, God prevents him from finding and killing David. How is the Holy Spirit upon us vital for our own success as disciples? We need to realize that nothing can touch us as long as we keep our Faith. God has us marked as His own and will not let us succumb to the enemy.
