The main thing they had in common was to be considered persons "non grata" by Saul or his followers. These men were either rebelling against the current king of Israel, some had criminal records and were being chased while others had issues against Saul, or they were being pursued for some debts. David probably had a hard time leading them in such areas as discipline, loyalty, getting along with one another and submission to leadership. Some of these men were related to David, some were acquaintances. There were brave men there and your usual malcontents. Leading people of diverse groups has its challenges as they are all of diverse backgrounds and customs. However they all needed a leader and David naturally fell into that spot. They had in common, was tht Daul was after them as we'll. These men was probably family members The kind of men was of all kinds probably The difficulies David has in leading them was trying to teach them patient and wait on God. What difficulties do you think David probably had in leading them? These men must have heard of David's exploits - that he slayed tens of thousands. Like him, they too were being pursued by Saul. Some of them were criminals, others were rebelling against Saul and some were being hounded for their debts. They were all outlaws trouble makers you name it and they were there for David. David's control over this group of men showed again his ability to lead. I think it took some great leadership ability to get this army of men on the same path David was on , David did and some went on to be good sloiders. They all were being pursued by the gov't--the king. Some were bandits, others owed a lot money. Because they were all being pursued, they were used to being on their own and fending for themselves. They probably didn't respect authority. Now they had to submit to David's leadership, but they desired to stand with & for David now. The men were attracted to David,some were his family members, and others were fleeing from Saul as well, some may have even heard of David's previous success and his powerful stance he took again the giant of Gath. Perhaps they even heard the song "David kills tens of thousand ,Saul kills thousands. They felt safe in his presence. They knew that God was with him. Many were on the run, fugitives, who were also fleeing to stay alive.or even, perhaps out of Saul's prison. David was not yet a trained 'foot soldier' ,he was young and inexperience with war, and being a leader. He obviously didn't have many resources. These men were people who may have owed Saul some money or they may have been robbers but they were all fleeing Saul. These men were probably use to doing things their way and they wouldn’t listen to instructions or probably not able to submit to authority. Their common bond was that they all were on the run for their lives. They were running from Saul and his army. These men were distressed, in debt, and discontented and they were being pursued. Also there were probably a few criminals looking for a way out of paying for their crimes. I imagine David was charismatic and projected his leadership. Since some of the men weren’t the most savory, they probably didn’t want to be told what to do and weren’t there for the right reasons.  David's men were attracted to him because they shared similar qualities. Many of them had a price on their heads-some because they were bandits but also the family of David was in danger of Saul just because of their family connection. They were a rough and tumble group of men, hit first and ask questions later. That is probably how they saw David since he had proven himself to be a brave warrior. David probably had difficulties in leading them because of their independence as warriors and fighters-everyone had their own perception of what should be done. Also, as said before, I'm sure these men were very independent. When people start to gather as a united group rules have to be made and enforced. He treats them right and fair.David has become a powerful warlord with his own private army-- and the responsibility to feed ithem and their families! David was young and became a part of these men who loved him so. The men, being from different backgrounds - I am sure David had to keep peace between them. He had to train them to work together, give structure to the "new army". B)They all were discontented in some way,maybe in debt,being pursued as seen as a threat to Saul like David,maybe owed him debt,seeking revenge.wanted to save their lives&those of their families.,all needing food &provisions&leading c)a motly mixed gp into an army of 400,some bandits in debt or discontented, others family members children &elderly relatives some skilled soldiers in battles,needing training,co-ordination & leadership to follow his plans. d)His main difficulties were probably co-ordinating&seeking provisions for them of food, clothing, shelter,training&organising this group from diverse backgrounds and abilities into an organised army.He trusted &sought the LORD’s help in all this. What difficulties do you think David probably had in leading them?  David was developing into a man of integrity, faith, self confidence, vision. People who were afraid of Saul, either because they had offended him or because of his poor and dangerous leadership and this was also what David had experienced. These people from all kinds of backgrounds and opinions undoubtedly made a difficult challenge for David as he wanted to unite them to protect themselves. These men were rebels & bandits that had a price on their heads. David would have had to use all the skills he had learnt in previous battles to keep them under control, this would not have been easy, but David would have been respected by these men as it was known to them that David was a great warlaord. David's men were probably attracted to him because he was resourceful, able to feed them and it seemed as though he was a great leader. What they had in common is that they were all running from the King.  There was no doubt a great deal variance in these men. Some came to David because they were his kin folks who were being persecuted. Men such as joab and his brothers. There would be others who would have done evil but at this point in time hey David needed all the bodies that he could get in order to resist the king. there would be many a difficulties in leading these men, one of the main difficulties would be feeding the man and finding them enough booty to make them happy. What difficulties do you think David probably had in leading them? David was an outcast and as such other people who were or felt they were outcasts were attracted to David's leadership. David was a natural leader and God had already established his path, so in this sense I believe these men, (and I assume many women and children) sought a kind of a refuge and an identity being together under his leadership. David's difficulties leading them would have been great, often and many. Herding cats comes to mind. The way I see it is that David was focused on the Lord. He was putting all situations before the Lord and being obedient to the Lords commands.
