David doesn’t kill Saul when he has the chance because he knew that it was not God's will for him to take Saul's life. David feared God and refused to touch he whom God had anointed and placed in the position as King. For David, rebellion against Saul is as rebellion against the Lord himself who has anointed Saul. Both David and his men were all enemies of Saul. Saul was hunting them down and would have them killed given the opportunity. David’s rationale for sparing Saul life was the fact that he was God's anointed and as such should be protected not harmed. The character of David is of one who fears God and respects authority. It shows that his faith is in God and His ability to bring justice in all situations; we don't have to seek justice for ourselves. Trust God. As a leader, David's respect for Saul and his dependence on God; demonstrates his ability as a leader because they followed his lead. Concerning his band, David must have extraordinary leadership qualities in order to have built trust in his men to obey him in not harming the king. Many of them are under Saul's death sentence, Just like David. 3. If David had indeed killed Saul in the cave, he and his men would had to face Saul's troops outside the cave 4. His character shows his strong faith in God which is based on the profound respect that he has for Yahweh- fear of the Lord. 5. That his leadership ability is strong by his faith guided through God. As angry as David was or might have been with Saul's treatment of him, I don't believe it was in his heart to kill Saul. He did however let Saul know that he had the opportunity and Saul would have been helpless. If he had had Saul killed or did it himself, he would have lived with it, it would never have left him and others would have looked at him differently. Instead David held himself to a higher note and restrained which is more difficult than revenging for wrongs done us or him. The motive of self defense was there. Saul wanted most of them wiped off the face of the earth. His rationale was Saul was THE LORD'S annointed and that was not to be taken lightly. He knew he answered to God for his actions. David's conscience was still tender to the Lord's voice and will. He didn't just follow his emotions or those of his fellow fugitives. He had faith that God was in charge and could handle Saul. What motive do he and his men have for killing a king who is trying to kill them? They are all hunted men, enemies of the King. Their motive is self defense...Kill or be killed! The men remind David that the Lord said: "Behold the day of which the Lord said to you, Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hands and you shall do to him as seems good to you." Their rationale was that Saul had been delivered into David's hand and that it must be God's will for David to kill him. What is David’s rationale for sparing Saul? He spared Saul because he was the Lord's anointed. What does this tell us about David’s character? David wasn't perfect by any means, but he loved the Lord and wanted to honor Him and not intentionally sin against Him. He still recognized Saul as his Master and King and seemed content to wait for God's timing to wear the crown, and not hasten it through killing Saul. About his faith? I love David's faith! The Lord was first and foremost in David's heart and mind. What does it say about David’s leadership ability that he is able to dissuade his men from killing Saul? This speaks highly of his leadership skills! They obviously respected him and obeyed his command. He knew God would arrange things in His own time. The motive would be to fight back because he was pursuing them. Same as question #1. He knew God would do things in His time & in His way. David respected authority--especially that of the Lord. That's what he was leaning on! He trusted God! His men also respected David and knew from experience that God was with him. The motive for David and or his men to kill Saul would seem reasonable from a worldly perspective, they were not allies, but enemies. Saul considered them enemies, I'm sure some of David's men considered Saul an enemy. An enemy killing another enemy would have been an acceptable reason according to worldly standards. What is David’s rationale for sparing Saul? David’s rationale for sparing Saul life was that he believed God's anointed Saul, God would take the appropriate action. At the appropriate time. By killing Saul at this opportunity he may make more enemies than he has friends. Saul's 3000 men are outside the cave. If he'd killed Saul, for all he knew the 3000 would have killed him and made Jonathan king. What motive do he and his men have for killing a king who is trying to kill them? I'd say there was a price on most of their heads. Kill the guy who put it there . . . What is David’s rationale for sparing Saul? David won't raise a hand against the man God has made King of Israel. Simple as that. He won't become the rebel he's accused of being. What does this tell us about David’s character? About his faith? It speaks volumes about David's upright character and his faith that God will bring about his planned purpose for David in His own good time. What does it say about David’s leadership ability that he is able to dissuade his men from killing Saul? David obviously was held in very high esteem by his men. There was their enemy, alone and supremely vulnerable. To be able to stop every hot headed outlaw in the pack from hurling a spear Saul's way indicates that what David said was obeyed instantly and completely. Every one of those men in David's band would have laid down their own lives to protect him. Such was his charisma and leadership ability. David’s refusal to kill Saul when he had the chance is based on Saul’s status as the ‘Lord’s anointed.’ David reasoned that God had appointed Saul as king and only God could take it from him. Self-protection and survival must have been David and his men’s motive for killing Saul. They were not only outnumbered 5 to 1 by the king’s army but had also been hotly pursued with the intention of having their leader David killed, and most probably them as well. The fact that David did not kill Saul indicated that he was not an evil doer – not a rebel or murderer. Saul was still David’s king, his commander, and his father-in-law. David had prayed that he be given the opportunity to prove to Saul that he had no intention to kill him and seize the throne. Here he was given this chance. When Saul was far enough away from the cave and it was safe, David left the cave and called Saul ‘my lord the king’, at the same time bowing down; proving that he was not out to harm Saul in any way. We see David letting God take care of Saul, he waits upon the Lord trusting in Him fully – he knows God will solve his problem with Saul. David displays his leadership ability by controlling his men. Also David was loyal to Saul as he was his master. David believed God and He obeyed his God by not touching his annointed. The motive to kill Saul is he was after their lives and wanted to kill them. The rationale of David to spare Saul is he believed Saul was God's annointed man. Davids character shows humility,obedience to God, forgiving and asking God to charge and judge his enemy. Marvellous faith in God. Bold and courageous asking God to deliver him form his enemies. Trusting on God and not his power or strength. After Saul rebelled twice against God's commands, Samuel rent the skirt of Saul, signifying that the LORD has rent the kingdom of Israel from Saul, and God would replace him with a man whose heart is after God's, this is why David did not kill Saul, his heart would not let him go against God's anointed. David also made a vow with Saul's son and God was their witness; that a vow of FRINDSHIP" forever would be between them and their seed. David's motive was never to kill Saul, however, his men may have been motivated because for them to live, you had to fight, this is what they were trained to do, they had a heart like Saul, they did not "FEAR" God, rebellion was in their heart, rebellion against the king of Israel, not understanding, that going against God's anointed, is going against God Himself. He is respectful of God's will in it, God's timing and God's authority. He is obedient to God though Saul is making life miserable for him. He recognizes that doing harm to Saul would be evil. "From evil doers come evil deeds." He is proclaiming his goodness while exposing Saul's evil. The motive that would have tempted David would have been fear and survival I would think. David though, put his trust in God and in God's promises to him. He is trusting Yahweh to mete out justice and does not let that come from his own hands. In fact, he cries out in despair that Saul is chasing one like a flea! He sees himself as pretty small in the face of his circumstances! The other men though, the ones who had been in rebellion to Saul before this, would have had different reasons. Rebellion and evil would have been continued in their hearts, while hoping to use David the great warrior to help them accomplish getting rid of their oppressive king. David's rationale for sparing Saul is that he would be disobedient to God if he killed the Lord's anointed. This shows us that David's character is commendable! His heart is right in it by being obedient to God. He desired in his heart to remain innocent of crime against God and His anointed and he trusted God to take care of him and fulfill His promises to David in His own time. It takes a lot of character to be in circumstances like those and remain in faith in God. He cried out many times in the Psalms questioning God so we can assume it was hard for David to understand why God wasn't fulfilling his promise and why Saul was permitted to practice such evil for so long. David's faith was strong in God. It takes faith to wait on God and that's what he was doing in the midst of severe circumstances. David's leadership abilities must have been profound! He not only had to convince people who had a Godly standard to not kill Saul and wait on God, but he also had rebels and men who would not have understood that. To get them to follow him indicates to me gifted leadership qualities. In weak leadership, there is grumbling and division. He had a way to reach all of them to be united and follow his lead even when he could have easily ended their suffering but chose not to! A person would really have to trust in leadership to not get mad about that! Can you imagine that in some circumstances today? There are major splits over issues WAY less important than that! David knew that Saul was still king and he respected fact that he was once anointed by God and also he made a covenant with his son Jonathan. David motive was Saul constantly seeking to kill him and Saul taking the lives of the priests and David may have wanted to protect safety of his family from being on the run. The men’s motives was that they had become fond of David and also most of them was mistreated by Saul therefore they probably dislike him and some was was being hunted for owing him money. What does this tell us about David's character? He was honorable, compassionate, and trusted (strong faith) in God. David was great leader, as a great soldier he lead with integrity and respect for his men so the men honored, respected, and they trusted him and they knew that God spirit was with him. About his faith? Since the time that God gave him strength to kill the lion and Goliath, David's faith became strong and enduring. Even at this time, as his faith was being tested, David put his trust in God, that he was doing that which was right and righteous. He trust God's justice will prevail and has patience to wait upon God for justice. God gave David the will to do with Saul what he pleased. God delivered his enemy (Saul) into his hands. Perhaps this was a test for David from God. David passes the test with flying colors! David did not chose to kill Saul because he was not an evil man. Obviously, their motive is to get rid of the threat against them. If they kill Saul his army will be rendered leaderless and Saul's army will disperse. His actions governing his men are always guided by God, David does nothing without first knowing what God wants, his first and only allegiance is to God. He gets his strength from God alone! Although he has motive, means, and opportunity to kill Saul, David decides to answer to Higher Power. David views Saul much like Saul and Samuel view him: God's anointed and chosen one. I can understand why killing Saul, especially not during a face-to-face battle, would seem tantamount to killing God. This would be impossible, yet when the thought of killing another person in cold blood -- especially when that person is at a most weak and vulnerable position (relieving himself, no less) -- elicits such a strong reaction, David did what was in his best interests: to obey the Commandment which forbids murder. What this says about David's character is that he was not afraid to follow God's Law, even in the face of possible mutiny. His faith guided his actions, and I think that taking that road further convinced his soldiers that following God's Law was the right thing to do. David's rationale for sparing Saul is in hope that Saul will recognize David desn't want to harm him, and Saul will stop trying to kill him.This tells us that David has a strong Godly character. He treats others as he would like to be treated. David's faith is in God who is his deliverer and meets all his needs. He doesn't have to take matters of God's into his own hands. David was able to dissuade his men from killing Saul because David was a successful leader they respected and who was true to his word. The motivation that David and his men have in killing a king who is trying to kill them is it might spare their lives and they wouldn’t have to run any longer. David’s rationale for sparing Saul is because Saul is God’s anointed one and David doesn’t want to go against God. This action tells us that David’s character is that he trusts in God for all things. His faith is going to carry him through. I think that this says volumes about David’s leadership. To persuade a bunch of men that the king is trying to kill and they have the opportunity to kill the king and yet David is able to convince them that it wasn’t the right thing to do mean that his leadership is the greatest.
