I'm having spiritual problems with these passages. To me, it seems that God punished Israel for their apostacy and sins by sending them to endure three generations of slavery and misery and then acted tenderly toward the fourth or fifth generation.

His prophet Isaiah prophesied in 700 and this came to pass in 539 ... 160 years of suffering! Some people were born and died in captivity. This reminds me of the centuries that the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt -- why didn't God rescue any of these bruised reeds and smouldering wicks who had turned their hearts toward Him? 

God uses suffering to purify His people. Of this I am certain.

Q2. (Isaiah 42:1-4) What do these verses teach us about the Messiah? What will characterize him and his actions? What does it tell us about his quest for justice? About his tenderness? If this describes our Messiah,

Isaiah 42:1-4 depicts Jesus as sent from God, as His chosen one in whom He delights. His purpose is to bring  justice to the nations. He will be gentle, not forceful or loud. He will not wear out before justice is established. He will give us hope. 

what difference should it make in our lives, values, and demeanor?

And this is how we should live peacefully caring about the injustice of the world.

Q2. (Isaiah 42:1-4) What do these verses teach us about the Messiah?

It teaches us that God loves Yahshua and he delights in him. He has chosen him and placed his spirit in him, he’s tender and peaceful. Yet all powerful and strong. 

What will characterize him and his actions? 
He is all powerful and will not be brushed aside. He will conquer and defeat all who are against God. He give’s justice to those who are faithful. He wont be discouraged and all can put their trust in him. 

What does it tell us about his quest for justice?

He wont be stopped until justice is done on earth. 

 

About his tenderness? If this describes our Messiah, what difference should it make in our lives, values, and demeanor?

If this describes the Messiah we should be more inclined to help out the poor and needy. To not turn our backs on those that society says are less than. Believers should share their testimonies and the word of God so that as many people as possible can experience the love and greatness that trusting and believing in God brings.

Q2. (Isaiah 42:1-4)

What do these verses teach us about the Messiah?

He is Chosen of Yahweh.  He is just and righteous in His actions, and at the same time gentle.  He will not give up / in.

What will characterize Him and His actions? 

He will be just and right (He will not work with bribery and corruption.)   He will reveal truth to the nations.

What does it tell us about His quest for justice?

There will be justice in truth.  It will not be twisted.  The reasons for actions will be judged, not just the actions.

What does it tell us about His tenderness? 

A bruised reed He will not break ..................  He shows mercy and kindness to the weak

A smoldering wick He will not put out .....................  He will be gentle and patient with those who have almost given up.

If this describes our Messiah, what difference should it make in our lives, values, and demeanor?

We too should show mercy and kindness to those weaker than us and be more tolerant with them.  Definitely not  give in to bribery but stick to the truth, no matter what.
