Q2. Meaning of John's Baptism

Recommended Posts

John baptized because he was preparing the people for the coming ministry of Jesus.

The meaning of the baptism John was performing was, a symbolic act of repentance and forgiveness of sins.

What baptism represented to those John baptized was, a willingness to forsake their sins and accept the coming Messiah.

John was baptizing to help individuals cleanse their souls of sin. He was helping them to repent and go back to God. It was a purification of their hearts. It was giving them the ability to see and possibly understand what was to come. It was a preparation only.

To the people that John baptized, it was a preparation for a new way of life. It gave them a chance to be right with God without having to feel empty and used in the temples. They were able to keep their dignity and self respect. They were able to approach God themselves.

Q2. (John 1:26-27) Why did John baptize? What is the meaning of the baptism he was performing? What do you think baptism represents to those John baptized?

  1. The reason John baptized was to confirm that the believers had repented (changed their minds) about the need for a Savior and that they were charting a new course to salvation.  No longer would they have to focus on the Law of Moses, now they could look forward to the coming of the Savior that John was announcing.
  2. John’s baptism symbolized a spiritual cleansing that, along with repentance, was the first step toward salvation through Christ Jesus.
  3. John’s baptism was their public declaration that a "spiritual cleansing" had taken place.  They were no longer bound to Moses’ Law but had received a higher calling toward salvation through Christ Jesus.

John baptized unto repentance in preparation of Christ's ministry. The meaning of John's baptism seems to one of purification in repentance. The people baptized by John had repented of their sins. Hopefully this symbolic act helped them accept the good news of our Messiah.

Q2. (John 1:26-27) Why did John baptize? What is the meaning of the baptism he was performing? What do you think baptism represents to those John baptized?

When the Lord sent John on his ministry, he was told to baptize the people and in the process of baptism, he would be able to identify the Messiah, who was to save the people from their sins. For he was told that he would see the Holy Spirit descending as a dove on the Messiah. Moreover his mission was to prepare the hearts of the people for the Messiah and the inward repentance was outwardly shown as baptism.

Baptism is not a Christian ritual. When a Gentile wanted to adopt Jewish beliefs or proselytize into the Jewish faith they had to do three things. Be instructed by the scribes, be circumcised if male, and be baptized in a ritualistic cleansing which meant that he was leaving the old way and becoming a citizen of the Jewish community. But John was not baptizing Gentiles, but Jews. What John was doing was an outward sign of repentance, preparing the hearts for the Messiah.

To those who were getting baptized by John it meant that they were ready to meet their Messiah as their hearts were turned now to the Lord. Since they were baptized in water, they were now prepared to be baptized by the One who is able to baptize them by the Holy Spirit and fire.

John baptized with water, to wash away the sin and to symbolize a new person, free from sin once repentance takes place. He was to prepare the way for one who would baptize with the Holy Spirit.  Baptizing is required to cleans the body and spirit form sin so that it can be pure to receive the Holy Spirit. To those John baptized it was a turning point in their lives.  They believed in what John preached about the Messiah and King coming who would forgive and make new and whole. they wanted to be free spiritually from sin and to live according to the will of God.

Q2. (John 1:26-27) Why did John baptize?

What is the meaning of the baptism he was performing?

He was preparing people for the coming of the Lord through repentance and baptism.  He called them a brood of vipers (snakes) and said that they couldn't just say they were children of Abraham.  They had to bear fruit worthy of repentance.  Most of waht he said they had to do had to do with money.

Luke 3:7-14 says:

"So he began saying to the crowds who were going out to be baptized by him, 'You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8Therefore bear fruits in keeping with repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father,’ for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham. 9Indeed the axe is already laid at the root of the trees; so every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.'

10"And the crowds were questioning him, saying, 'Then what shall we do?' 11And he would answer and say to them, 'The man who has two tunics is to share with him who has none; and he who has food is to do likewise.'  12And some tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, ;Teacher, what shall we do?' 13And he said to them, 'Collect no more than what you have been ordered to.' 14Some soldiers were questioning him, saying, 'And what about us, what shall we do?' And he said to them, 'Do not take money from anyone by force, or accuse anyone falsely, and be content with your wages.”

What do you think baptism represents to those John baptized?

It meant a totally changed life.

  2. What is the meaning of the baptism he was performing? The baptism John was performing, the proselyte baptism, means baptism of Gentiles converted to Judaism. But John was baptizing Jews.
  3. What do you think baptism represents to those John baptized? As Josephus puts it, John did the baptism with the understanding that the people not only hoped for the remission of some sin, but also for purifying the body; the assumption being that the soul had already been purified through righteous living.

The reason for John baptizing was to prepare for the recognition of Christ.  His baptism with water is subordinate to a higher baptism.

John's mission was transitional.  His mission was solely to introduce the Messiah.  He intensified the sense of sin, engendered a desire for a much nobler baptism of the Holy Spirit and prepared for the Messiah and the Kingdom of God.

For those baptized by John the Baptist, they were baptized into discipleship, a chosen and responsible people of God.  His baptisms in the river Jordan was a clarion reminder of the passage of the Israelites of old from the east Bank to the west.   The new converts were beckoned to be the new people of God.   Jerusalem and the Israelites failed to convey true faith to the world.  Only John's baptism could renew the Jews as the true people of God.  Present official religion with its self purification ceremonies were not adequate.

John 1:26-27) Why did John baptize?

John came to prepare the way of the Messiah. To get the people ready for Him. To baptize was to immerse in water. This typically meant a cleansing. A washing away of something that should not be there.

What is the meaning of the baptism he was performing?

The baptism John was performing meant /was symbolic of cleansing the person from sin he was or had committed . John was calling on the people to repent from the wrong lifestyle and to start living righteously. The baptism thus reflects that the person has changed.

What do you think baptism represents to those John baptized?

To me it would have meant that I have now chosen to change the way I previously lived. That part has been washed away. From now I choose to live a godly life.

I do think to those who were genuine, that's what it meant. But as with everything there were those who just followed the masses.

Q2. (John 1:26-27) Why did John baptize? What is the meaning of the baptism he was performing? What do you think baptism represents to those John baptized?

Why did John baptize?
John baptized people after they had confessed their sins and had repented. (Matthew 3:1-5)

What is the meaning of the baptism he was performing?
It seems it was a public expression of a person’s confession of sin and his/her repentance.

What do you think baptism represents to those John baptized?
Since they were baptized after hearing John preach to them about preparing the way for the LORD, these people were taking John’s message personally, preparing their way (hearts) by confessing their sin and repenting of it.  Now they would go forward looking for their Messiah.  I believe John’s ministry sensitized their hearts and led them back to their Father’s heart, making them more ready to receive the LORD Jesus.
