One of the two disciples was Andrew. The other was probably John, the writer of this book. These disciples left John the Baptist because that was what John wanted them to do—he was pointing the way to Jesus, the one John had prepared them to follow. These were Jesus’ first disciples, along with Simon Peter and Nathanael.

Andrew and another person started following Jesus on the recommendation of John the Baptist who pointed out Jesus as "The Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world".

This recommendation caused John the loss of two of His disciples.

John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him. He told the two men that the Lamb of God was coming toward them. He told the men that they would learn more from Jesus. John was very willing to encourage his followers to leave him and follow Jesus. He knew that the men would learn more and get closer to God by traveling on. I am sure that John got blessing and grace from God for his selfless acts.

1. They went to follow Jesus upon John’s recommendation as he proclaimed him “The Lamb of God.”
2. John lost two of his disciples to Jesus but in the end, he lost nothing because his mission was to pave the way for Jesus so since they followed Jesus, it was preordained from the onset.

There is no recommendation or loss or gain etc.  God is in charge of our lives and John and the two disciples were following His plan.  

 

John said "Look, the Lamb of God".  He is pointing out who the person was passing by.  I would say through John's ministry to to two disciples they were able to accept believing in Jesus so when Jesus walked by they wanted to follow Him.

The disciples followed Jesus at Johns recommendation. It did not cost John anything, rather it affirmed him as he claimed, " a voice in the wilderness...." John was a great prophet indeed, he watched his prophecy come to pass. Many prophets would long for this. He must have been so excited, it didn't matter to him how he died

He died a fulfilled man. What great joy!!

John the Baptist recommended to the two men they should follow Jesus. John knew Jesus was the Messiah and these two men would be better off following Him. Not sure the recommendation cost John anything other the having two less followers. John's mission was completed.

I have read other contributors to answering this question. I fully agree to the responses they have provided.

I would like to expand the thought behind this event to present day.

Today we have knowledge that is built on the past. However, in the pat knowledge was limited to a privilege few that had a sound education and access to ancient libraries.

Technology has given us the Internet and now the layperson can access knowledge from their privacy of their computer at home. A major down side to this is that the seekers are flooded with information that is false. To the novice this flood of knowledge can be misleading and confusing.

In the case of Jesus’ first disciples John the Baptist guided them towards the right person. This advice is not available to seekers who explore the Internet to find truthful knowledge.

I recommend new seekers to make contact with a local pastor or seek the advice of close friends they trust; friends that have experience knowing Jesus.

But small is the gate and narrow the way that leads to life, only a few find it. Beware of false prophets. They come to you is sheep clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. By their fruit you will know recognize them. Matthew 7:14-17

John recommended that Andrew and another person to follow Jesus. The only thing that cost the recommender was he lost a follower and Jesus gained one.

It was John the Baptist who pointed Andrew and the other person (probably John, the author of this gospel) to Jesus. Immediately they left John and started following Jesus. Every leader likes people following them. But we see in John the attitude that says “you have been my disciples, but now be His disciples and follow Him”. He fades away slowly into insignificance. For it’s all about Jesus. Here the recommendation cost the recommender his disciples. But this should be the heart attitude of every leader. Rather than allowing the people to follow them, they should always point them to Jesus, and make the people disciples of Jesus rather than disciples of themselves.

The disciples heard John  say " Behold the Lamb of God" as they watched Jesus walked and followed him. It was always John's purpose , to prepare his followers for the coming of the Messiah. He taught them until Jesus came to take over the role of teacher. John's role as teacher and preparing the way for Jesus has completed  it's course now that Jesus has been presented to them.  He must decrease so that Jesus can increase.

I don't see any cost, other to John, other than the two disciples stopped following John and started following Jesus.  So, in that sense, it cost him two disciples.

I would say that this recommendation which was set into motion by John cost him nothing; instead, it helped him to maximize the achievement of his divine assignment of announcing the coming of Jesus by contributing a disciple(s) who helped to "prepare the highway for the Messiah".

• The Father instructed John on what to look for in the person who would baptize with the Holy Spirit, vs. 33
• He testified (to everyone, including these disciples), that this was the Son of God

After all this, the next day, vs. 35, no wonder they followed Jesus

• He lost at least 2 disciples
• But, the was the purpose of his coming, to introduce Israel to the Messiah, so in essence, nothing was lost

Andrew and another disciple began following Jesus at the reccomendation of John the Baptist. John knew and said he would decrease so Jesus could increase. John was perhaps one of the most faithul men in the bible. He gave his life for the cause of the gospel.

It was the John the Baptist.  John the Baptist didn't share in the evangelical mission of the Early church.  He had direct divine illumination that Christ is the Lamb of God.  He bore witness to the true light of the world.  What a divine testimony !  He embodied the desires of the prophets

who wrote and preach eloquently about the Servant of the Lord.  

Following and abiding were the two important characteristics of Andrew and John.  Now they are disciples of Christ due to the divine testimony of John the Baptist.

Pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote about the cost of discipleship.  The importance of Christain community is so integral for Christain formation.  Young believers in today's society have not been to exposed to a strict regula.   I was blessed years ago when I was in college.   Mandatory chapel services each from morning to bedtime. Plus we had a monthly retreat day and conferences on the spiritual life.  The early desert fathers in Egypt practiced discipleship in their communities.

John the Baptist decreased while Christ increased.  John's mission had been coming to an end.

John pointed out Who Yeshua was, viz., the Lamb of God. Upon hearing this, Andrew and the other disciple followed Him. 

It basically was the start of fufilling what John came to do, viz., make straight the way of the Lord. By having taught his followers correctly, it is not surprising that they take the next step to follow Yeshua. 

So he started to see his calling fall into place.
