Joe_Applegarth
Q4. (John 2:6-10) Why did Jesus perform this miracle behind-the-scenes? Who was he trying to protect? What does the quantity of the wine tell us about Jesus' glory? What does the quality of the wine tell us about Jesus' glory? 1) Diminishing the significance of His first display of power was deliberate. His actions were specifically intended to minimize His involvement in the matter. In this way, He was able to perform the miracle without violating His Father’s will regarding “His time.” It was not time for Him to display His power publicly so He did it as privately as possible and in such a way that it would still be in keeping with God’s timing. 2) Since God had already predetermined the blueprint for Jesus’ ministry, I believe He was trying to protect Mary. Her request was inappropriate because even though she didn’t dictate what He should do, she certainly did imply that He should do something. Even though He does mildly rebuke her, He didn’t deny her a solution to the problem. 3) The wine Jesus created was “the best ever” and in no small quantity and as He always does, He provided more than was actually needed. I believe the message here is pretty clear, “God’s blessings are bountiful” His goodness and grace is plentiful and without measure!
van
And we know when we go to wedding reception there will be people that get so drunk that can't even see. He performed it behind the scenes so the party people won't start thinking that He performed magic and He want all peace and love for the new couple. That Jesus is so sweet I know. Jesus is perfect in everyway. That's awesome!!!!
pickledilly
Jesus did not perform this miracle in a public way because it was not yet the moment for that. He may have been sensitive to His mother and concerned for the reputation of the host, but if protecting anything, it was ultimately the Father's will and timetable. The quantity of the wine tells us of the extravagance of Jesus' glory. It is abundant, generous, and full. The extraordinary quality of the wine reveals the extraordinary quality of the One who performed the miracle. His glory far surpasses the very best of earth. The fact that this wine came after the best the host had to offer also suggests something. Christ, the superior, had come as the finale to man's best efforts at making provisions for relationship with God - efforts that ran short and were never enough. The primary reason Jesus went ahead with this miracle may have been revealed in verse 11. This first sign He did was for the purpose of manifesting His glory. And the ones recorded for recognizing that purpose and believing with faith in Him because of this miracle were His disciples. There were lessons for Mary, but this quiet display of Jesus' glory may have been primarily for the disciples to prepare them for all that would soon be set in motion as Jesus began public ministry. Regardless of the reason, I am certain He would not have done the miracle apart from the Father's approval (ex. John 5:30).
Lionwolf
Q4. (John 2:6-10) Why did Jesus perform this miracle behind-the-scenes? Who was he trying to protect? What does the quantity of the wine tell us about Jesus' glory? What does the quality of the wine tell us about Jesus' glory? Jesus did not wish to call attention to this act. A wedding is about the bride and groom whether it is today or 2000 years ago. Jesus, being humble as well as loving, did not wish to detract from the bride and groom. the quality and the quality tells us that nothing is beyond Jesus. It not only shows us about His humanity but also shows us His glory, His divinity.
Paul Hodge
Q4. (John 2:6-10) Why did Jesus perform this miracle behind-the-scenes? Who was he trying to protect? What does the quantity of the wine tell us about Jesus' glory? What does the quality of the wine tell us about Jesus' glory? Jesus had said to his mother that his hour had not yet come. That is to say it was the not the right time to announce the beginning of his ministry. Besides the people at the wedding feast were well on the way to becoming drunk. He therefore did not want to bring attention to himself. Jesus was trying to protect himself as well as his new disciples. They had just recently been introduced to Jesus and he needed more time with them to teach them about his true mission on earth. If Jesus had publicly performed the miracle of changing a rather large volume of water into wine there was a risk that He may have be accused of being a sorcerer. This would certainly attract the wrong kind of attention. As I stated in a previous question the quality of the new wine represents the arrival of Jesus into the world. His new wine (ministry) will out rank the quality of all past wines known to mankind. I also think that there is a relationship between the wedding feast at Cana and the parable of the wineskins in the Gospel Matthew, Mark and Luke. He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and sews it on an old one. If he does, he will tear the new garment as well, and the patch from the new will not match the old. And no one pours new wine into old wine skins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins, the wine will spill, and the wine skins will be ruined. Instead, new wine is poured into new wineskins. Celtic Wanderer
Q4. (John 2:6-10) Why did Jesus perform this miracle behind-the-scenes? Who was he trying to protect? What does the quantity of the wine tell us about Jesus' glory? What does the quality of the wine tell us about Jesus' glory? It was not yet time to go public. Jesus needed to fulfil all things written of Him and to complete His ultimate calling. This meant that He needed to adhere to the Father’s timetable. His disciples needed to be trained and He needed to preach to many more people. The quantity of the wine was very large (approx. 600 litres). The energy required to change this quantity of water into wine instantaneously has been calculated at some 250,000KJ. About half the energy contained in an average lightning bolt! Jesus did this quietly! He was able to create things. Nothing in all of creation was made without Him! https://cen.acs.org/articles/93/i4/Water-Wine-Gummy-Bear-Testing.html This miracle showed the disciples that Jesus was God in the flesh, He was the Creator. It manifested His glory quietly. All of nature does this and leaves us without excuse. “The Great Creator became my saviour and all God’s fulness dwelleth in Him.”
Old Jerry
Jesus probably performed this miracle behind-the-scenes because his time hadn’t come and he didn’t want the word to get out that he could perform miracles. He was trying to protect his ministry. If everybody knew that he could perform these miracles then the multitudes would start coming to him to fix their problems. I think that the quantity and quality of wine tells us that the best is saved for the end of the age.
Nate Murray
Why did Jesus perform this miracle behind-the-scenes? I think he did not want to draw attention to himself. I also think the way he performed the miracle shows that He is working behind the scenes when we have problems too big for us. Who was he trying to protect? I don't think He was trying to protect anyone. What does the quantity of the wine tell us about Jesus' glory? His glory, grace and love overflow. What does the quality of the wine tell us about Jesus' glory? His gifts are the absolute best gifts for us.
Godswriter
Q4. (John 2:6-10) Why did Jesus perform this miracle behind-the-scenes? Who was he trying to protect? What does the quantity of the wine tell us about Jesus’ glory? What does the quality of the wine tell us about Jesus’ glory? To shield himself from being known too soon and also because it was not His time to do miracles yet. The disciples I would have to say since He would one day train them to take after Him. That it was all for the glory of God. That Jesus did it to glorify no one but God.
Rosesam
Q4. (John 2:6-10) Why did Jesus perform this miracle behind-the-scenes? Who was he trying to protect? What does the quantity of the wine tell us about Jesus’ glory? What does the quality of the wine tell us about Jesus’ glory? He did not want to draw attention to Himself before His hour had come. He did the miracle in such a way that only the servants knew how the wine was made. But no one would have paid attention to the words of servants. Probably the family from social embarrassment and to allow the continuity of celebration that was happening in the family. Moreover we again see a picture of Law and Grace. Moses, the representative of law, first miracle turned water to blood, brought destruction and misery. Jesus, representative of grace, first miracle turned water into wine, saved the day and brought joy into their midst. Jesus was not just meeting a need, but He was lavishing a gift. The bride and the groom could sell the wine and use the money. The water looked at its Master and blushed and became the best wine. It demonstrates His omnipotence in control of the natural world. (1) To keep from drawing attention to Himself, and to give Himself time to complete His ministry, to His disciples and to the world. "His time had not yet come"! (vs 4b) (2) If He was trying to protect anyone or anything, it was to protect His ministry, and the reason that He came down from Heaven:------- to complete His mission, before the Cross! I'd say his mother, who had a relationship with the family (apparently), and had given her word, by implication, that they could trust Jesus to fix this problem What does the quantity of the wine tell us about Jesus’ glory? The creator of grapes and wine only creates what brings His father glory, and it is done in abundance What does the quality of the wine tell us about Jesus’ glory? Jonathan Edwards
Christ does this miracle quietly due to the fact that his hour hasn't arrived to offer himself as the Lamb of God. Now Jesus Christ the bridegroom has now claimed his true bride, all the scattered people of God. Christ wanted to carefully instruct the Apostles as to His true mission; Christ was not into sensationalism. Christ was totally obedient to God the Father in all he did and said. Christ was protecting the bride and the bridegroom from an embarrassing situation. He gave the divinely-given wine as a sign of new Messianic area has now arrived. Cana miracle replaced Jewish purification. The six purification jars of water were an indication of the inadequate Jewish purification rites. Now we have received, grace upon grace (John 1:16). Now that Christ is glorified, we receive this abundant life. We are in the Holy of Holies, we rest from earning salvation by good works. Our position with Christ is heavenly. No more need for purification ceremonies. Outer court Christains have yet to experience that abundant life. The Epistle to the Hebrews underscores the above. Acts of the Apostles illustrates how the early Church experienced the Abundant life.
Daniel R
1. Why does Jesus perform this miracle behind-the-scenes? He performs this miracle behind the scenes to keep Himself secret and not let Himself gain too much attention, because, like Jesus said, His time/hour has not yet come (John 2:4). He may have also wanted the attention to be on the groom and the bride rather than Himself. 2. Who was He trying to protect? Mainly, Himself because His hour had not yet come and maybe the bride and groom as well; He wanted the attention to stay on them. 3. What does this quantity of the wine tell us about Jesus' glory? The quantity of the wine that Jesus made shows us that Jesus gives abundantly and He is not selfish and tight with how much He gives. 4. What does the quality of wine tell us about Jesus' glory? The quality of the wine Jesus made shows us that Jesus always gives His best to us. He doesn't hold back at all! He wants to give us the best. THANK YOU JESUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Irmela
Q4. (John 2:6-10) Why did Jesus perform this miracle behind-the-scenes? Who was he trying to protect? What does the quantity of the wine tell us about Jesus' glory? What does the quality of the wine tell us about Jesus' glory? It was a shame for the groom to have run out of wine. So Jesus did all the instructions as discreetly as possible. No big ceremony. Just quietly. But the disciples saw and believed in Him. God's glory is bountiful and matchless.
