Q1. Another Paraclete

Recommended Posts

  • 2 weeks later...

Q1. (John 14:15-17) What do you think is the best way to describe the Paraklētos that Jesus sends?

I think He is best described as "the fullness of the Godhead dwelling in us bodily."

In what sense is the Holy Spirit “another” Paraclete?

Jesus was their physically present Comforter, but limited by time and space. He was preparing them for the indwelling Presence of the Holy Spirit Who would replace Him at Pentecost.

Who was the initial Paraclete?

Jesus, the Word of God.

In what way can the Holy Spirit replace him?

Jesus was limited by His Flesh to be in one place at a time. The Holy Spirit is everywhere at once. He indwells believers, never to leave once He's invited to come into a life.

(John 14:15-17) What do you think is the best way to describe the Paraklētos that Jesus sends?

1.  Parakletos is the Holy Spirit that you know because he lives within you.  This is a Holy Spirit that the world does not see or know.

In what sense is the Holy Spirit “another” Paraclete? Who was the initial Paraclete? In what way can the Holy Spirit replace him?

2.  The Holy Spirit is "another" Paraclete because the disciples already had a Paraclete to help them.  Jesus has been their Paraclete.  The Holy Spirit will replace Jesus as an interior presence, always with us, to guide and instruct us.

The Parakletos is the Holy Spirit (v17) also described as the Spirit of Truth. Parakletos is interpreted in the English translations of the bible, as the Comforter, (KJV), "Counselor" (NIV, RSV), "Advocate" (NRSV), and "Helper" (ESV, NASB) as stated from the notes. Although the bible does not directly state, but implies that the Holy Spirit is God and the Son (Jesus) is God-as we have seen in our study of John's gospel up till now. Matthew 28:19 also implies the trinity. 2 Peter 1:3 says that believers have all the divine power they need to live Godly lives. Our words cannot describe adequately who God is.

As the notes point out also Jesus describes himself as the present, Paraclete. In addition, he said that he will send another, to his disciples (in the future), who will give them power to be his witnesses (Acts 1:8).

The Parakletos that Jesus sends is the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity.

Jesus was the first Paraclete, the Holy Spirit is the new Paraclete when Jesus is no longer on earth.  The Holy Spirit (Paraclete) is from God and sent by God and is God (as Jesus was) and indwells within the believer.

God bless!

I think of the Paraklētos as the Friend that God has sent to comfort, counsel, and advocate for us in the spiritual realm.

As God in human flesh, Jesus was the first Paraclete - the Comforter, Counselor, Advocate, Friend of God sent to be with us.  Man could only be in His physical presence.  The Holy Spirit is the second Paraclete sent by God to be in us.  Now God’s presence indwells man.

The Paraclete has always been God, but has been manifested to us through two different Persons of the Godhead.  Jesus, as the Son of Man, was confined to the limits of a physical body on earth. But after the resurrection He had to leave earth and return to His dwelling place in heaven.  So He sent the Spirit as His permanent replacement to do the same ministry that He did as Paraclete while on earth.  God’s Spirit came to spiritually reside within believers all over the world throughout all human history and will never leave us!

The Greek word Paraklētos has been translated as the "Comforter" (KJV), "Counselor" (NIV, RSV), "Advocate" (NRSV) and "Helper" (ESV, NASB). Based on these translations, the Paraclete can be considered another Paraclete as Jesus was our Paraclete when He was on earth i.e. Jesus was the One whom God sent to help us and be our Advocate to the Father. It is because Jesus went back to the Father that He was able to send us the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will replace Jesus as our interior presence, always with us, to guide us and instruct us.

Q1. (John 14:15-17) What do you think is the best way to describe the Paraklētos that Jesus sends?

What an amazing promise for these Jewish believers to hear, because, the scriptures speak of only a few persons having the Holy Spirit with or upon them, (Num 11) Moses and the seventy elders – (Judges 6:34) The Spirit came upon Gideon, supernaturally giving him wisdom and power to overcome the dangers his office was facing, in order to gain victory over the enemy of Israel – (Judges 11:29) The Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephtah – (Judges 14:6) The Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon Samson with supernatural courage and strength – (1 Samuel 16:13) The Spirit of the LORD came upon David, these being a few named who had the Spirit of the LORD come upon them.

What comfort there is in knowing, the promise of the “Spirit of the LORD” is for all who believe and love God’s Son, one of the ways I can best describe the Parakletos is that of “Comforter”, for there is great comfort in knowing the “truth”- Jesus did not leave me comfortless, the Holy Spirit was sent, He who empowers me to a faithful bride.

In what sense is the Holy Spirit "another" Paraclete?

The Holy Spirit is an all powerful counselor, just like the Messiah.

Question one

1Parakletos  is the Holy Spirit that was sent to us . The Holy Spirit is the very presence of God within us and all believers helping us live as God wants.

2.It is a Comforter combines the ideas of comfort and counsel. The Holy Spirit is a powerful person on our side working for us and with us.

3 The other Parakeltos was the Spirit of God himself.

4.When Jesus Ascended he sent back the Holy Spirit ,when he walk on earth as a man he could not be at all places at one time now because he gave us the Holy  Spirit he can be with us anytime any place. The Holy Spirit has been active among people from the beginning of time but after Pentecost he came to live in all believers.

Lesson 25 question 1

Jesus sends the Paraclete variously translated as conselor, comforter, advocate, and helper. The Paraclete urges, exhorts and encourages. Frankly, I like all of these and appreciate the various translations. The Paraclete sometimes helps, or comforts, or encourages and even exhorts depending on the need. The Holy Spirit is called another Paraclete because Jesus was the first one who presented himself to the disciples - but with Jesus leaving Jesus says he will be with them and will be in them as the third person of the Godhead, namely the Holy Spirit.

In what sense is the Holy Spirit "another" Paraclete?

Who was the initial Paraclete?

In what way can the Holy Spirit replace Him?

The literal meaning is best translated as “called beside or alongside to help”; I therefore find the best description to be as my ‘Helper”. On its own the word might not be strong enough to represent all that the Holy Spirit means to me. But I do find that He encompasses all of helper, comforter, counsellor, encourager, Spirit of truth, and advocate, amongst others. The Holy Spirit is another Paraclete in that Jesus was the first one who was with us. Now we have the Holy Spirit replacing Jesus in us.

I think the best way of describing the Paraclete is as a Strengthener.  He is ‘another’ Paraclete, because up until now Jesus has been the divine inspiration for the disciples.  On the surface it looks as though Jesus is saying that the Holy Spirit will replace him in being ever present with us after Jesus has ascended to Heaven.  However, as God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are all One, I think this means that God will still be with us in spirit.  As Pastor Ralph reminds us, in Matthew, Jesus tells his disciples, "Lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age".I think the best way of describing the Paraclete is as a Strengthener. As Pastor Ralph reminds us, in Matthew, Jesus tells his disciples, "Lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age".

The best way to describe the parakletos Jesus speaks of is a Holy Spirit from God Himself, whom Jesus has ask the Father to send. The Parakletos is a Spiritual representation of Jesus Himself. The Parakletos represents Jesus in a spiritual sense to well within us, to comfort, help and strengthen us in time of need. My question is why does Jesus have to ask the Father to send the Parakletos? Is this request for the whole world of believers as a whole or by the individual  person?

Jesus was the physical Parakletos to comfort the desciples and His followers. The Parakletos he will send is spiritual, an indwelling spirit of the Trinity, to comfort, help and strengthen the believers.

Jesus was the original Parakletos in His time on earth to preach the good news of the Kingdom of God.

The Holy Spirit replaces Jesus because he has ascended into Heaven to be with the Father. Now He sends His representative, the Parakletos, to be with us.

Q1. (John 14:15-17)

Q. What do you think is the best way to describe the Paraklētos that Jesus sends?

A.  Comforter, Teacher, Counselor, a Friend.

Q. In what sense is the Holy Spirit “another” Paraclete?

A.  Jesus was about to leave them now to go alone into an unfriendly world. The other Comforter was to be given as a compensation for his absence, or to perform the offices toward them which he would have done if he had remained personally with them. And from this we may learn, in part, what is the office of the Spirit.

Q. Who was the initial Paraclete?

A.  Jesus. He had been to them a counsellor, a guide, a friend, while he was with them. He had instructed them, had borne with their prejudices and ignorance, and had administered consolation to them in the times of despondency.

Q. In what way can the Holy Spirit replace him?

A.  1. The Holy Spirit will replace Jesus as an interior presence, always with them, to guide and instruct them.

2, It is to furnish to all Christians the instruction and consolation which would be given by the personal presence of Jesus, John 16:14.

John 14 15 - 17 “If you love me, obey my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate,* who will never leave you. 17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.

Jesus was soon going to leave the disciples, but he would remain with them. How could this be? The Counselor—the Spirit of God himself—would come after Jesus was gone to care for and guide the disciples. The regenerating power of the Spirit came on the disciples just before Jesus’ ascension (20:22), and the Spirit was poured out on all the believers at Pentecost (Acts 2), shortly after Jesus ascended to heaven.

Jesus is the initial Paraclete.

The Holy Spirit is the very presence of God within us and all believers, helping us live as God wants and building Christ’s church on earth. By faith we can appropriate the Spirit’s power each day.

We know that for the Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came to them and spoke tongues they didn't know, a miracle. This was God's plan to grow His kingdom through through Jesus's disciples. Jesus was their initial counselor, though they didn't understand the big picture, which we can more easily see by studying the Bible and for example this study of John.

the Holy Spirit, replacing Jesus, because as a physical man, he returned to heaven. And the Triune God, being the only God that really exists, we can now see the purpose and comfort of having God living in us. We need this constant guidance in this fallen world, especially with TV, internet, and temptations of the world's pleasures constantly in front of us.

In remaining in Jesus, we are calling upon the Holy Spirit to guide us all the time. Praise God for such a total solution to good living today!

  • What do you think is the best way to describe the Paraklētos that Jesus sends?  The Paraklētos is the Holy Spirit who was preordained to replace Christ with the apostles after his ascension.  He would lead them to a more profound knowledge of gospel truth and provide the power that they would need to undergo the hardships and persecutions that they would have to endure.

In what sense is the Holy Spirit "another" Paraclete?  The Holy Spirit is God Himself existing inside us. He guides us in truth, serving as a constant reminder of everything that Jesus taught.  The Spirit works within us, conveying the Lord’s peace and love and providing comfort and strength so that we too can live by the Spirit and not succumb to the desires of the flesh.

Who was the initial Paraclete?  Christ Jesus (1 John 2:1)

In what way can the Holy Spirit replace him?  I don’t believe the Holy Spirit was intended to “replace” Jesus, He is in fact Jesus’ intercessor.  When we choose to give our lives over to Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within us.  Without the Holy Spirit’s guidance it would be impossible for us to truly follow Jesus and receive salvation.  He is Jesus’ ambassador, connecting us spiritually to God and to Christ Jesus.

I think that the best way to describe the Paraclete is to call him a counselor because he is away counseling us in our daily journey. The Holy Spirit is another Paraclete because he is always with us. I think the initial Paraclete was Jesus. The Holy Spirit replaces him because he is with us always.

The best way to describe the Paraclete is that He is our counselor and guide for the life we live in Christ daily and that He also convicts us of sin as well. The Holy Spirit is another one in the fact that Jesus was the initial Paraclete or helper that God sent to the world so many years ago. The Holy Spirit replaces Him in the fact that He is always with us and will guide us and lead us into all truth.

The Paraclete is the third person in the trinity..... the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.  He is the one Jesus promised the disciples who would be with them to guide them in all things holy and righteous when He returned to the Father.  He said he would not leave them comfortless.  He would not leave us comfortless.  Jesus was the inital Paraclet sent from God. The Holy Spirit replaces Him in all things.  The Holy Spirit is who is with us when we pray and do the will of God.  He replaces Jesus in our hearts since Jesus has returned to sit at His place at the Fathers side.  The Holy Spirit gives us comfort and guides us in all things holy and righteous.  He is our spiritual connection on earth to heaven by way of our righteous hearts.

Q1. (John 14:15-17)

1.    What do you think is the best way to describe the Paraklētos that Jesus sends? Another way to describe the Paraklētos that Jesus sends is to consider that we are diplomats in God’s Kingdom. Because of human frailty, we are prone to deviate from acting according to the fruit of the Spirit. However, this Parakletos being part of the Holy Trinity, is above human weaknesses and therefore is aptly placed as a friendly Ambassador within us, to guide us, remind us, counsel us and support us in whatever way is necessary.

2.    In what sense is the Holy Spirit "another" Paraclete? The Holy Spirit is "another" Paraclete in the sense that Jesus came first and firmly established THE EMBASSY OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD ON EARTH through signs, teachings- discipleship-atonement of our sins on the cross, defeating death and ascension. So the Holy Spirit is in a sense the successor of the first Paraclete.

3.    Who was the initial Paraclete? Jesus Christ was the initial Paraclete.

4.    In what way can the Holy Spirit replace him? The Holy Spirit can replace him by being the seal on us that demonstrates that we do belong to Jesus.

The Holy Spirit is both Comforter and Advocate.  Roman's 8:26,27 states that the Holy Spirit is within us while Christ intercede above us .  The indwelling Spirit pleads on our behalf.  The Holy Spirit is here to STRENGTHEN our hearts and minds. by enabling us to understand the whole truth as contained in the Holy Bible.  The Holy Spirit takes of what is of Christ and teaches us the excellencies and beauties of Christ. The Holy Spirit would DWELL IN THE HEARTS OF HIS FOLLOWERS and they  could know more than his continuance with them in the flesh.

Christ is our Joshua in the Holiest of Holies.  Christ has not abandoned us; we are the mystical body of Christ.  As Christ comforted the disconsolate during his earthly ministry so now the Holy Spirit is our assistant, pleading and interceding as an Advocate. Christ is the initial Paraclete.

The Holy Spirit reveals Christ to us.  Christ revealed the Father, so the Holy Spirit reveals Christ's glories and attributes and bestows heavenly consolations to us in this vale of tears.  The Holy Spirit would DWELL IN THE BELIEVER never to be removed.  Apostle John is truly teaching that the Holy Spirit is a Person no less than Christ.  His personal acts and works are spoken of.

Q1. (John 14:15-17)

What do you think is the best way to describe the Paraklētos that Jesus sends?

In what sense is the Holy Spirit "another" Paraclete?

Who was the initial Paraclete?

In what way can the Holy Spirit replace Him?

The Parakletos can be described as the "Comforter", "Counselor", "Advocate", "Helper", "Friend".  My words would be as the One Who never leaves my side.

Up to this point they had had Jesus living / abiding with them or at their side, one can say as the initial Paraclete.

Because they would no longer see Jesus (the initial Paraclete) , Who would ascend to take up His place again, which He had willingly laid down to pay the price for our Salvation, viz.,  come to earth as a human being, and eventually be the perfect Sacrifice for the sins of the world,  the Holy Spirit Whom the Father would send  would then be another Paraclete.

The Holy Spirit will replace Jesus as an interior presence, He will be within them, always with them, to guide and instruct them.
