Jen
Q1. (John 16:12-15) In what sense does the Holy Spirit guide us into all truth. Does this promise apply only to the apostolic age to lay the foundations of the faith? In what sense does it apply to us today? The Spirit always speaks that which comes from Christ who only spoke that which came from the Father. They are of one accord. The Spirit was sent to be a guide for us to lead us into all truth. On our own we would go astray however the Spirit is the truth and going back to the 'personal emissary' term when someone sends out their personal emissary they send someone who will accurately represent what they stand for according to who they are. In this case, God is the truth and Christ came to reveal Him to us as God's personal emissary. Christ is able to do this because He and the Father are one. John 10:30. The Spirit is also one with God and Christ and only speaks what He hears from Jesus who only spoke what He heard from the Father. If Jesus needed to listen to the Father and the Holy Spirit needs to listen to Jesus how much more do we need to listen to the Holy Spirit. We are surrounded by the untruth of the world everyday and we need to be surrounded by the truth of the Holy Spirit to not be lead by the untruth of the world. God Bless! SoiKosum
Q1. (John 16:12-15) In what sense does the Holy Spirit guide us into all truth. Does this promise apply only to the apostolic age to lay the foundations of the faith? In what sense does it apply to us today? The Spirit won't be teaching us new doctrines. Rather He will be reminding his is of what Jesus has already taught us. The Spirit will listen to Jesus and relay this to us, just as Jesus listened to the Father and relayed that to his disciples and only spoke what the Father told him to say. No, this promise does not only apply to the apostolic age. It also applies to us today. When we study the bible, we must not only gain 'head' knowledge. We must also seek to gain spiritual knowledge and truth. We can only do this through spiritual discernment with the help of the Holy Spirit. Clarence
Q1. (John 16:12-15) In what sense does the Holy Spirit guide us into all truth. Does this promise apply only to the apostolic age to lay the foundations of the faith? In what sense does it apply to us today? The bible says that "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness" (2 Tim 3:16). The passage in question does apply today. The Holy Spirit guides through situations if I listen to him in my life, even if I feel inadequate to cope at the time (John 14:26). He also helps me understand scripture when I read it. However, all of this is tinged (1Corinthians 13:12)-one day I shall see him fully.
JanMary
Q1. (John 16:12-15) In what sense does the Holy Spirit guide us into all truth? Holy Spirit removes the veil which blinded us to Truth before we were born again. He gradually transforms our worldly minds as we read and hear the spoken Word of God, so that we begin to think God's thoughts...and we begin to live lives that are pleasing to Him. He leads us out of being afraid of God, into a relationship where we understand and believe the love of God and to live in His Grace and freedom from condemnation. Does this promise apply only to the apostolic age to lay the foundations of the faith? No, but it was crucial in the apostolic age to lay the foundations of the faith, and to clarify the Apostles' understanding of all that Jesus had taught them. In the same way today, He teaches us how to live and walk in faith. In what sense does it apply to us today? Holy Spirit IS Truth and the Word of God is alive and active like a two edged sword, cutting away lies and unbelief with one edge and bringing us into truth and wholeness with the other. As we read or hear the Word of God spoken, He gives us understanding, renewing our fallen, worldly mindset, to think His thoughts. He takes specific scriptures and makes them a Rema, or personal Word for us as individuals. (Takes a passage we're reading and quickens it so that we know it's a promise or is for specific guidance or direction.)
hanks
Q1. (John 16:12-15) In what sense does the Holy Spirit guide us into all truth. Does this promise apply only to the apostolic age to lay the foundations of the faith? In what sense does it apply to us today? The work which Jesus had begun was to be continued by the Holy Spirit. Today He guides us into all truth, just like He guided the apostles in their lifetime. They committed it to writing, giving us today our NT. Combined with the OT we have God’s written revelation, which the Holy Spirit uses to teach us the truths we need to know. He will only speak the things that are given to Him to say by the Father and the Son. Jesus is the truth (John 14:6), and the Word is truth (John 17:17), and the Holy Spirit is "the Spirit of Truth", so wherever the Holy Spirit is at work, there must and can only be truth. blezed
(John 16:12-15) In what sense does the Holy Spirit guide us into all truth. Does this promise apply only to the apostolic age to lay the foundations of the faith? In what sense does it apply to us today? The Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth by going before us, leading the way, removes obstructions, making things plain and clear. In the apostolic age, this promise applied to lay the foundations. They wrote down in the New Testaments what they Holy Spirit revealed to them. It also applies to us today because we can read God's word that the apostles wrote for our self and let the Holy Spirit guide us.
RebeccaMallinson
The Holy Spirit will guide us in the correct direction, towards the truth. We just have to be praying and listening to him. This promise applies to all who follow Christ, not just those in the apostolic age. The apostles very helpfully, guided by the Holy Spirit, wrote down what happened and the inspirations that came to them. By reading these writings we receive spiritual guidance. However we can also be inspired directly ourselves. It is a feeling of great joy when it happens.
PeteD
Lesson 28 Question 1 I believe the Holy Spirit guides us primarily as we read and study the Scriptures. The Holy Spirit inspired the apostles to produce the inspired inerrant scriptures. Subsequent individuals also gifted in intellect and by the Holy Spirit in a similar - analogous fashion write and preach through the Holy Spirit based on the original scriptures - cannon. But these subsequent interpretations are not inspired to the same degree as the original scriptures. They are not considered inerrant but must be tested by the yardstick of the Scriptures. To the degree that they are in keeping with the accepted scriptures they can be used as any spiritual gift can be use, -to edify the church. lighthouse2014
Q1. (John 16:12-15) In what sense does the Holy Spirit guide us into all truth. Does this promise apply only to the apostolic age to lay the foundations of the faith? In what sense does it apply to us today? The Holy Spirit will tell us only what he knows from Jesus. The holy Spirit will teach us or bring to mind the words and will of the Heavenly Father. The promise is not only to the apostles who established the church in the 1st. century but also to us, all who seek the truth of God. Even today, we seek the true word of God, the word Jesus taught us is what he heard from the Father. As we humbly seek to know Jesus, God will by the Holy Spirit help us to discern the word of God in truth. For that is the Holy Spirit's job to remind, guide and help us to know God's own heart. haar
Q1. (John 16:12-15) In what sense does the Holy Spirit guide us into all truth. Does this promise apply only to the apostolic age to lay the foundations of the faith? In what sense does it apply to us today? The Holy Spirit guides into all truth by taking what the Lord Jesus says to us. He also as Pastor Ralph summarised, is: "...the Reminder, the Explainer, the Guide into all truth, to assist you to understand accurately the Father's words to your heart" The promise of the Holy Spirit is also for our generation to help interpret the Bible, to empower us with wisdom and discernment. He also guides and leads us in our Christian living.
Stanley Tavaziva
Q1. (John 16:12-15) In what sense does the Holy Spirit guide us into all truth. Does this promise apply only to the apostolic age to lay the foundations of the faith? In what sense does it apply to us today? In his last moments with his disciples, Jesus (1) warned them about further persecution, (2) told them where, when, and why he was going, and (3) assured them that they would not be left alone, but that the Spirit would come. Jesus knew what lay ahead, and he did not want the disciples’ faith shaken or destroyed. God wants you to know you are not alone today. You have the Holy Spirit to comfort you, teach you truth, and help you. The truth into which the Holy Spirit guides us is the truth about Christ. The Spirit also helps us through patient practice to discern right from wrong. Jesus said the Holy Spirit would tell them “about the future”—the nature of their mission, the opposition they would face, and the final outcome of their efforts. They didn’t fully understand these promises until the Holy Spirit came after Jesus’ death and resurrection. Then the Holy Spirit will reveal the truth that was written down in the books. We have the Holy Spirit who is a gentleman and He guides us every day
pickledilly
Jesus could not convey everything He would have liked to have taught and explained to the apostles because they could not bear it all in those final hours with Him before His arrest and death. He assured them that the promised Helper from God would complete the declaration of the truths of God that Jesus had been teaching them. The Spirit would also do something for them that Jesus could not do; He would open their eyes of understanding to comprehend what they were taught and to rightly apply it. In one sense, this promise was specific to the apostles, for they had no forerunners in this new relationship with God through Christ. The truths of God were to be "placed in their hands” with responsibility to lay down the foundations for the Church. They were accountable for an accurate written record of God’s Word to man, which was an entirely new revelation of God to us (not a new God, but a new revelation of Him). They were to rightly interpret and teach this new covenant relationship, and hand it down to those of us who would follow. It was imperative to “get it right”, and only the Spirit could inspire and enable that. In another sense, this promise is generally for us, as well. The Spirit continues to declare and reveal the truths of God to believers, as He uses that written record of God’s Word that was given to the apostles for our benefit. The Spirit guides us into all the truth at all times and works in our hearts and lives for the glory of Christ (vs. 13-14).
Joe_Applegarth
It’s only through the spiritual (internal) instruction from Christ Jesus through the Holy Spirit that we can ever hope to understand the will of God. Jesus said, “It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me’…” (John 6:45 ESV). The only way we can be “taught by God” is through the Holy Spirit; it’s through him and him alone that provides us with a true understanding of God’s will. When the apostles were given the gift of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, they were fully empowered to fulfil the tasks that Jesus called them to do. His promise however, isn’t restricted to the apostles, Jesus told them (Matthew 28:19-20 ESV) “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Without guidance through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can never hope to attain the knowledge or understanding of the truth revealed in Scripture. Old Jerry
The Holy Spirit guides us into all truth by nudging us or putting it on our heart that we should be doing something or not do the thing that we are about to do. This applies to all ages to continue to laying the foundation of our faith. This applies to us all the time.
Godswriter
Q1. (John 16:12-15) In what sense does the Holy Spirit guide us into all truth. Does this promise apply only to the apostolic age to lay the foundations of the faith? In what sense does it apply to us today? He guides us into all truth through the word of God by nudging us or telling us what we need to know to do what is right in His eyes. This promise does not apply to just to the apostolic age; it applies to all ages laying the foundation for our faith. It applies to us by guiding us to make decisions, and bring people to Christ. Lisema Ralitsoele
Q1. (John 16:12-15) 1. In what sense does the Holy Spirit guide us into all truth?. The Holy Spirit guides us into all truth in the sense that he assists us to acquire information by relaying what he gets from Jesus regarding the Word of God, by reminding and explaining to us, as necessary, with a view to our correctly understanding, speaking, and living the Word. 2. Does this promise apply only to the apostolic age to lay the foundations of the faith? No, it does not only apply to the first apostles. 3. In what sense does it apply to us today? It applies to us in the sense that we are still obliged to understand the Word of God accurately; and we can achieve this by calling on the Holy Spirit to assist us to have a truthful understanding of the Father’s Word in our hearts so that we can transmit the Good News of Christ to others in an effective manner. Jonathan Edwards
God leads us into all truth in regards to what is revealed in the Holy Scriptures. God will gradually reveal more and more gems, rubies and diamonds as we read and pray while studying the Holy Scriptures. I can testify to that! As I preach and evangelize, portions of the Bible become very clear to me. I use my concordance and lexicons at times to assist me to understand the Bible. The promise that Christ spoke about refers to to the whole church age. A prime example is the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. This doctrine didn't appear out of the blue; it developed over the years. A number of important Ecumenical councils defined our faith in particular to Christological doctrines. We need to do our daily homework! Bible study is an ongoing work in our lives: we cannot neglect prayerfully study of the Holy Bible. Commentaries are nice and have a place; however, we must prayerfully study the Bible and meditate on various verses.
Irmela
Q1. (John 16:12-15) In what sense does the Holy Spirit guide us into all truth? Does this promise apply only to the apostolic age to lay the foundations of the faith? No. In what sense does it apply to us today? The Holy Spirit will remind us of what Christ has shared/declared to us. We are told that the Holy Spirit will declare to us what is to come; He will announce the events of the future; He will disclose to us what is to come in the future; He will not speak from Himself but as many things He will hear, He will speak. Just as Jesus said that He only said what He heard from the Father, so also will the Holy Spirit. These promises were not only for the Apostles but are for us as well. It is the Holy Spirit Who will lead us into all truth.
