When Jesus said "It is finished", He meant that He had completed the work that Father God had sent Him to earth to do:

- He has taught truth using the very words of the Father.

- He has revealed the glory of the Father through his miracles.

- He has words of eternal life.

- He has borne the sins of all the world upon him on the cross.

And now it is finished.

The beginning chapters of John's Gospel reveal his mission. Jesus came to:

- Bring eternal life: "In him was life, and that life was the light of men." (1:4)

- Bring grace and truth: "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth." (1:14)

- Reveal the Father and the Father's glory: "No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known." (1:18)

- Die as a sacrifice for our sins. "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (1:29)

Jesus fulfilled the prophesies about Himself and completed His assignment on earth by dying on the cross to redeem Man from his sins.

Jesus had just completed the work of bearing the Father's wrath and punishment for the sins of the whole world. Now the way was opened for Holy Spirit to descend and breath His life into believers from all nations, walks, and tongues. Jesus revealed Himself to the Jews, but His death opened the way for gentiles also to embrace Him and to receive eternal life.

 

He revealed His Father's glory to the earth. He set in motion the countdown to the last period of time when He will come again to reign for 1,000 years as King of Kings and Lord of Lord's to the glory of the Father.

 

What mission(s) had the Father given him. In what way did he complete them?

 

His missions were to fulfill all of the law and the prophets, which had been spoken to the Jews, to prepare them for His coming as their Messiah.  But in dying, His open arms embraced the entire world...that "whosoever" will may come to Him for eternal life. He gave birth to the church, His bride. In coming to earth as a man, the Word became flesh.

 

He completed them by living in total dependence upon His Father, and by living a life of sacrifice, humility and obedience. Jesus never owned anything except His seamless tunic, so was untethered to this world by attachment to "things", status, or position. His mission was people! He came not to make bad people good, but to make dead people live!

Jesus had achieved all that he had set out to do to fulfill the will of his father with the aid of the Holy Spirit (Luke 3:22). The word that Jesus used "finished" when he said "it is finished" means, bring to an end, to complete something (from the notes). The notes add, Jesus came to bring eternal life (John 1:4), bring grace and truth (1:14), reveal the Father and the Father's glory (1:18) and die as a sacrifice for our sins (1:29). Jesus had achieved all he set out to do, by living his life in the world. He humbled himself. Philippians 2:6 says that ..."existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be used for His own advantage (Holman Christian Standard Bible). ..."though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich" (2 Corinthians 8:9).

All that Jesus came to do was accomplished, "finished forever gone the sins he bore, His work is so complete, they'll never be remembered more, I  worship at His feet".

 

His mission:

Bring eternal life. 'He is life' (1:4)

Bring grace and truth. He dwelt among us (1:14)

Reveal the Father and the Father's glory. Jesus being God Himself revealed God the Father who is Spirit (1:18)

Die as a sacrifice for our sins. (1:29) died on the cross for our sin debt which is paid in full, Tetelestai!

When Jesus says, "It is finished," what does He mean?

In what way did He complete them?

The debt has been paid in full – our sins, past, present, and future have been forgiven. Jesus’ task is now complete – He has been “obedient unto death” and the Father has been glorified. We note that it is a cry of victory, not one of defeat. Our Lord Jesus was in control and He determined the time of His death, as He willingly accepted death to complete the mission His Father had given Him. The pouring out of His soul as an offering for sin! The work of redemption and of atonement! We can only thank God today for the finished work of the Lord Jesus on the cross of Calvary!

What Jesus meant when he said "it is finished" relates to the fact that Jesus had done and obeyed the father's will to the very end, even to death. He had left his glory in heaven, became man and humbled himself as a servant to do the will of the Father.

The mission that God the Father had given Jesus was to reveal the Father's glory, to humble himself and become man. To declare the truth as he received it from the Father and show Father's glory by the miracles he had done. To become the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Jesus bore our punishment for our sins so we could be reconciled back to the Father.

He meant the work of salvation of mankind as designed by God and executed by Jesus has been completed through His obedience to the Father, suffering, humiliation, pain and crucifixion.

Jesus means that his mission on earth is finished.  The Father had given him the mission of reconciling us to God, setting us an example of right living, proclaiming God’s Kingdom to us and finally to die for our sins and redemption.

When Jesus says, it is finished as the lesson states, this is a cry of accomplishment and an announcement of Jesus'  obedience to the Father. The hymn in Philippians 2 sums this up.

The mission given to Jesus  is to:

Bring eternal life

Bring grace and truth.

Reveal the Father and the Father's glory

Die as a sacrifice for our sins.

Jesus completed the mission. His words and deeds brought eternal life. He brought the very words of the Father, full of grace and truth. He revealed the glory of the Father through His miracles and he did submit himself and allowed himself to be killed for the sins of the world.

Until this time, a complicated system of sacrifices had atoned for sins. Sin separates people from God, and only through the sacrifice of an animal, a substitute, could people be forgiven and become clean before God. But people sin continually, so frequent sacrifices were required. Jesus, however, became the final and ultimate sacrifice for sin. The word finished is the same as “paid in full.” Jesus came to finish God’s work of salvation, to pay the full penalty for our sins. With his death, the complex sacrificial system ended because Jesus took all sin upon himself. Now we can freely approach God because of what Jesus did for us. Those who believe in Jesus’ death and resurrection can live eternally with God and escape the penalty that comes from sin.

 

John 4:34 Then Jesus explained: “My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work. John 17: 4 I brought glory to you here on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. All these verses point to the words He said it is finished.

Here I am in the 30th week of this study to hear Jesus say "it I finished." He took that drink so He could speak this loud enough for it to be his great triumph. He completes the work the Father sent him to do:

We could not ask for more, He died so we could die to Him and have eternal life, as John 17:3; so we can die to Him now; not waiting til we die. Now we are in eternity, seeking to know God better, to know Jesus better via study of His words in the Gospel. What a glorious Savior. thanks you God for the Salvation through Jesus Christ, though we don't deserve it. Praise His Holy Name!

Jesus finished the work given to Him by the Father to accomplish. His mission was to faithfully obey the plan and will of God for the salvation and redemption of His most treasured creation, man. As the One who lives and reigns forever, Jesus brought eternal life to mankind. As the Living Word who came to earth clothed in human flesh, He brought absolute truth and offered the grace from heaven for us to know Him and understand that truth. As God Himself, He came to reveal God the Father to mankind, not as only a distant and stern divine Patriarch but as a loving and merciful intimate Abba who desires familial relationship. As the spotless, sinless Lamb of God, Jesus came to take our just punishment and make final atonement for humanity's rejection of God and transgressions of rebellion against Him.

 

He completed every element of His mission as He faithfully obeyed every detail of the Father's will to reconcile man to God. So now, in Him, we have full assurance of eternal life with Him. We know absolute truth to rightly shape our world view and guide our lives, and we are given divine grace and power to courageously live in truth. We have a relationship of love with God that was unavailable to those under the Old Covenant, as all who believe on Christ are adopted as children of the Father. And the blood of Christ has fully atoned our sins and clothed us in His righteousness. It is finished! The victory is won! Hallelujah, what a glorious Savior!

By saying “It is finished”, Jesus was affirming that His mission on earth had been completed and through His death He had eliminated the sin debt owed by all of mankind.  It also signified the fulfillment of the OT prophecies about the coming of the Messiah.

 

Jesus’ primary mission was to reconcile mankind back to God.  He told us what His mission was in Luke 4:18-19 when He said, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.  He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”  God’s purpose was centered in Him (and Him alone) so the very day Christ Jesus was born the word became flesh.  He died on the cross for the salvation of all mankind and with that, His mission was completed.

Jesus was saying that his work here on earth was finished. He had finished what he was sent here to do. He was here to show us the truth and to give us a way to eternal life. He completed them by dying on the cross.

1.    When Jesus says, "It is finished," what does he mean? By saying “It is finished” Jesus means that the debt owed by man to his Creator on account of Adam’s sin is finally and forever paid in full.

3.     He completed them by taking away man’s sin, removing it as far as the east is to the west, and declaring victoriously that it is finished, done, signed, and sealed because of His blood.

Christ's missions consisted of :

Defeat of Satan, breaking down of the middle wall of partition between Jews and Gentiles, making a way for personal access to God, cancelation of the reign of death and sin's power, cancelation of Satan's claim on mankind and satisfaction of the full justice of God.  Christ's other missions were for bodily healing and making a way for the full endowment of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus had completed the work He had come to do.  All the prophecies had been fulfilled.

He died as the perfect sacrifice.  He bore our sins.  He died in our stead.  Paid the debt.  Opened up the way to the Father.  We can now approach Him, as we are in Christ.  Clothed in His righteousness alone. 

The Greek word TETELESTAi  was used in business,  the DEBT is FULLY PAID;   used in the court system, which meant , the SENTENCE IS FULLY SERVED;  also as a military term, which meant the BATTLE HAS BEEN FULLY WON.   So when Jesus said IT IS FINISHED it included all these.
