Q2. The 70 Elders

Recommended Posts

Q2. (Numbers 11:16-29) What enables the 70 Elders to lead the people? What happens when the Holy Spirit comes upon them? Why does Moses long for the Spirit to come upon all God's people?

The Holy Spirit enables the 70 Elders to lead the people by putting a portion of the Spirit on the Elders. Like what happened with Elijah and Elisha in 2 Kings 2: 9-11; when Elisha asked for a double portion of the Spirit that was on Elijah.

So God took part of the Spirit that was on Moses and put it on the Elders so that they could lead and minister to the Israelites.

When the Holy Spirit came upon them they prophesied but it only happened once. Because they were meant to be leaders of the people not prophets like Samuel or Elijah and Elisha.

I think Moses longs for the Spirit to come upon all God’s people so that they will all be unified. When people are led by the Spirit they are closer to God and are more thankful and grateful than ones who are not close to God. When we are filled with the Holy Spirit our whole focus is on God and what He wants us to do and not on ourselves. Moses had seen how the Israelites were after they were led out of Egypt. They soon forgot all about how he had used the plagues to get them out from under Pharaoh. They forgot how he divided the Red Sea for them, so they could walk across and escape while the Egyptians got swallowed up and drowned.

The Israelites were only focused on their material needs and not spiritual food. Moses longed for the Spirit to come upon all of them so that they truly understand how great and awesome their God really is and that they would be more thankful.

Q2. (Numbers 11:16-29) What enables the 70 Elders to lead the people? What happens when the Holy Spirit comes upon them? Why does Moses long for the Spirit to come upon all God's people?

1. God said, I will take of the Spirit that is on you and put [the Spirit] on them. It was the Holy Spirit which is power that helped them to lead the people.

 2. When the Holy Spirit rested on them, they prophesied, but they did not do so again.

 3. The Spirit will fall on them wherever they are which will allow them to be used according to God’s will. The Holy Spirit is great power received from God.

The Holy Spirit enables the 70 Elders to lead the people. When the Holy Spirit came upon them, they prophesied. Moses longed for the Holy Spirit to come on all of God's people because he wanted to share the load. He wanted to take some of the responsibility.

The 70 Elders could lead the people because they were already leaders AND because God gave them the Holy Spirit to guide them. The Holy Spirit also helped them bear the burden of the people. They then prophesied as a one-time experience and foretold the future. Moses and the 70 already had the gift of the Holy Spirit. He longed that the people could have the same gift, assistance and relationship with God because he and the 70 already had it and he wished the people had the same privilege and blessing.

They help Moses.

What happens when the Holy Spirit comes upon them?

Numbers 11.25 The holy spirit Comes upon as Cloud, the spirit rested on them, they prophesied, but they did not do so again.

Why does Moses long for the Spirit to come upon all God’s people?

I think because of  Moses made  good relationship with God and holy spirit stayed silence in him to communicate all the time.

The reason they are able to lead the people God specifically chose them to lead the Israelites. For He told Moses to select elders from the congregation to lead the people. However the requirement was they had to be elders in order to lead the people. Once they went to the Tabernacle the Lord anointed them with the Spirit of the Lord to lead the people. Once the anointing was completed, two of the elders prophesied to the people. He longs for the Spirit to come on them all because of the fact all they do is complain, whine, murmur, and whine about their circumstances to Moses and against God.

What enables the 70 Elders to lead the people is the Holy Spirit.  God again specifically ask for 70 elders. In Exodus 24;1, " And he said unto Moses, Come up unto the LORD thou, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu and seventy of the elders of Israel and worship ye afar".  I would believe that the Elders were in leadership and were respected. God's Spirit goes upon whomever He chooses for His work and it was to assist Moses prophetically. Moses wanted the the Spirit of God to come down on all God's people, " The Spirit of the Lord will come powerfully upon you, and you will prophesy with them and you will be changed into a different person." 1 Samuel 10:6.  The people needed to know the power of God.

The weight of carrying the burden of the entire group of Israelites, with all their grumbling and complaining, was too heavy for Moses alone. Yahweh promised help through the appointment of elders to share this burden. The 70 elders were enabled to lead the people because Yahweh put His Spirit upon them. The presence of the Spirit was validated to themselves and the people when these elders were equipped with a one-time gift of prophecy. This confirmed to everyone that they were selected and guided by the Spirit of God, just as Moses was. Their specific task was to assist in leadership and administration of justice.

Moses wished the LORD would put His Spirit on all the people. This may have been a foretelling of the future time when this very thing would come to pass as the Spirit now indwells those who believe in the Gospel. He longed that this was possible for the people he led, for they would also be empowered for holy service and would have personal relationships with God themselves. They would have had a greater sense of unity and purpose as His people, and greater humility before the LORD.

The Holy Spirit, of course, enabled 70 elders to be leaders to share Moses’ burden – their prophesying was an experiential confirmation that the Spirit of God was on them - it was only to show the people as they (the 70) prophesied only once. Through this God made His point something like saying, My spirit is with these 70 – that’s it.

Moses thought that with God’s mere presence in the midst of Israel, His people will distinguish God’s people from all other peoples of the earth : How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us? What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?" (Exodus 33:16)

a. The Holy Spirit.  b. They can prophesy. c. Because if the Spirit came on all God's people they can prophesy, all speak the Word of God and be led by the Spirit of God.

1. These Elders had already demonstrated to Moses their leadership capabilities. (Numbers 11:6)

2. When the Holy Spirit was put on the Elders they began to prophesy. This gave the Elders the same heart that Moses had for the people. They would be able to work together.

3. Moses experienced the blessing of the Holy Spirit abiding in him and appreciated the comfort and peace it brought to him. He knew all God’s children would benefit from the blessing of the indwelling spirit.

Q2. (Numbers 11:16-29) What enables the 70 Elders to lead the people?           UNITY, in the Spirit.   They were given the same mind of thought , so as to Judge the people with the Heart of God, with a Grace and mercy only our loving Father could provide.

What happens when the Holy Spirit comes upon them?

They were initiated into the army of God and this was confirmed by their acts of prophecy;  God knowing their heart even blesses the two who were late , and they were blessed where they were and God continues to do the same today , He meets us where we are , its a matter of the heart.

Why does Moses long for the Spirit to come upon all God’s people?

Moses know that once the Holy spirit touches a person , that old self starts to die and people will no longer be 'stiff-necked' but will begin to listen, and listen to the Word of God.

* ( It is a lot easier traveling with a few million happy people , is a thought that probably crossed his mind .)

Also Knowing God as he did i am sure he wished that blessing on the others .

The 70 Elders are enabled to lead the people by the Spirit. The elders begin to prophesy when the Spirit comes on them. I think Moses knows that the people would listen and obey the Lord better if they were listening to the Spirit. I'm not sure it would have mattered though since we have the Holy Spirit now and God's people still refuse to follow Him.

Q2. (Numbers 11:16-29) What enables the 70 Elders to lead the people? What happens when the Holy Spirit comes upon them? Why does Moses long for the Spirit to come upon all God’s people?

a. The Holy Spirit enabled the 70 Elders to lead the people. Nu. 11:17

b. When the Holy Spirit rested upon them, they prophesied .

c " I wish that all the LORD's people were prophets and that the LORD would put his Spirit on them" (Numbers 11:29) . If more people was empowered with the Holy Spirit, It would help Moses share in the burden with the peoples problems and the ability to lead. .

God took his Spirit from David and placed it on the 70 elders of Isreal known to be officials and leaders. This Power of the Spirit shared by David due to act of God ,enabled 70 of elders .

Moses Loved his people and wanted the Spirit of God to go with ""us"" .Moses wanted a sign to the people that God is pleasesd with them and His presence is going with the crowd .Moses wished the whole world to know that Yahweh is with His People by being marked with the indwelling Spirit of God  in the people of Israel in both actions and rest.

The Spirit upon the 70 Elders (Numbers 11:16-17, 25)

The burden upon Moses was addressed before. We read in Exodus 18, that after Moses had led the Israelites across the Gulf of Aquaba to the land of Midian, where he had lived for something like 40 years, his father in law Jethro , the priest of Midian, brought Moses his wife and sons. When he saw that Moses was judging the people all on his own he was appalled. He advised that righteous men be appointed to judge tens, fifties, hundreds and thousands, so there was an appeal system.

by Numbers  11, we see that this system had failed. Although it was a priests response to the problem, it was still the idea of man. Perhaps the people did not trust them or considered their judgements were not those that Moses would have made.

In Numbers 11 v 21, Moses tell God that he has 600,000 fighting men, so by a simple demographic calculation we can see that upwards of two million people were under his care. No wonder he was fed up!

This time he got it right and sought God's solution. When the Lord put part of his Spirit on each of the seventy elders they prophesied, showing the people that this had happened. They now knew that these men's judgements would be as valid as if made by Moses himself.

The Spirit gave them wisdom and discernment, enabling them to do the job.

Moses knew that there would come a time when the Spirit of God would be poured out on all flesh, and longed for it to happen so that the Israelites would truly be God's people in the same way that we are today.

The time is coming when the power of the Spirit will constrain the people of God to begin to speak out to condemn the wickedness of this society even if it means fines or prison.

The Lord permitted Moses to choose for himself the most faithful and efficient men to share the responsibility with him. . . . yet serious evils would eventually result from their promotion. They would never have been chosen had Moses manifested faith corresponding to the evidences he had witnessed of God’s power and goodness. . . . He was not excusable in indulging, in the slightest degree. . . . Had he relied fully upon God, the Lord would have guided him continually and would have given him strength for every emergency.

Moses was fed up with them complaining and wanted to die. But interesting the Lord gave him a choice and yet the choice he made  in the long term was more a curse than a help and a blessings..

God divides the Holy Spirit between Moses and the 70 Elders so that they can aide Moses in leading the people.  When they receive the Holy Spirit, they began prophesying. Moses wish that the Spirit could fall on all the people and that way they would know the will of God and would stop complaining and just trust and obey him without all this doubt and complaint.

The 70 Elder was empower by the Holy Spirit to lead the people. God sent Moses help to lead the people. Moses wanted the spirit to come upon the people so that they could do God's will. He also knew that it would be an intimate experience to give them passion to serve God. This can also be said as "catching on fire for the Lord"

2a. The Lord anointed the 70 leaders/elders with the Holy Spirit.

b. They all prophesied and sounded forth His praises and declared His will. (I love in 11:29 that God demonstrated that He is not limited to being in one place at a time, by anointing Medad and Eldad who were not with the 70.

c.  In V 11-15 Moses was clearly exasperated and worn out from this rowdy, undisciplined and whining group, and from carrying the burden of them all by himself. When he heard the 70 elders rejoicing and realized he was going to have their assistance in leading the people, he longed for all of the people to receive the gift of the Holy Spirt....and to be in sync with God's plans and purposes for this miserable journey. (They were at odds with just about everything Moses instructed them to do....kind of like us before our wills are surrendered to His Lordship).

The gift of Gods Spirit upon the 70 elders enables them to lead the people.

When the Holy Spirit comes upon them they begin to prophecy.

Moses longs for the Spirit to come upon all God's people, so that they will see and know who God really is and would enjoy having a relationship with him, rather than grumble and complain.

The seventy elders prophesied when the Spirit of the LORD came upon them.  The wisdom and the understanding that comes from the Holy Spirit gives those who receive it the ability to walk in obedience to God, and the ability to lead people.  The burden was great on Moses and he needed more help.  Some of the people, maybe all, were longing for the foods they were used to eating. They tired of the manna.  They got cranky and complained in God's hearing and He got angry.  When the Spirit of God came upon them, they prophesied.  If the Spirit of God rested on them all of the time, they would be hearing from Him frequently and responding to him with faith, in obedience to His words.  It is much more likely they would not be complaining about their circumstances.  These scriptures answer why Moses wanted all the people to have the Spirit of God resting on them:

Numbers 11:26 Two men, however, had remained in the camp—one named Eldad and the other Medad—and the Spirit rested on them. They were among those listed, but they had not gone out to the tent, and they prophesied in the camp.

Numbers 11:27 A young man ran and reported to Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.”

Numbers 11:28 Joshua son of Nun, the attendant to Moses since youth, spoke up and said, “Moses, my lord, stop them!”

Numbers 11:29 But Moses replied, “Are you jealous on my account? I wish that all the LORD’s people were prophets and that the LORD would place His Spirit on them!”

Tuesday, November 27, 2018 - I also wish that all the LORD's people--including me, were prophets.  I don't think I prophesy, but He talks to me.
