pickledilly
When answering the final question of Lesson 2, I had no idea this would be the next topic and question. In part of my answer there I worked through this same thought. Jesus was the first Helper/Advocate [based on John 14:16]. He dwelt with the people, but had to leave us in order to fulfill His mission of redemption. His physical presence on earth could not provide the widespread outpouring of power into individuals throughout the ages that was needed for us to be saved and righteously live out our faith [ref. John 14:7-14]. . . The Spirit is the second Helper/Advocate sent to dwell within believers and be with us forever. At times, Jesus sent the disciples out to preach with the power and authority to cast out demons and heal the sick [Matthew 10:1; Mark 3:14-15; 6:7; Luke 9:1-2]. So they had already experienced something of the presence of the Holy Spirit as they obeyed their Paraclete. These missions required a measure of the Spirit upon them to equip them for that ministry. The Spirit lived with/upon them. As Jesus faced the cross, He promised them that once He returned to His glory in heaven, the Spirit would be sent to live within them as their second Paraclete. This Helper would do something Jesus could not do in His role as Messiah/Redeemer - remain continually with them forever. It would not be just a portion or a measure, but the fullness of the divine Person called the Holy Spirit that would be poured into each of them. The Spirit would have the same message and truth as Jesus because they are both One with the Father. On the Day of Pentecost, this glorious promise was fulfilled. When Jesus sends the Holy Spirit to replace him then the Holy Spirit will be the other Paraclete. Who was the initial Paraclete? Jesus is the initial Paraclete. In what way can the Holy Spirit replace him? The Holy Spirit ca replace Jesus by staying with us and reminding us of Jesus teachings. How was he "with" the disciples? Lottie
Q1. (John 14:15-17) In what sense is the Holy Spirit "another" Paraclete? Who was the initial Paraclete? In what way can the Holy Spirit replace him? How was he "with" the disciples? When will he be "in" them? The Holy Spirit is"another" Paraclete because Jesus was with them at first. He was with them helping them until his death on the cross. When he died and rose again He sent the Holy Spirit to help them. Jesus was the initial Paraclete. When He was on the earth he was their role model to follow. He was their comforter and encourager. The Holy Spirit replaces Jesus in that He is within them. He helped them make decisions that we were pleasing to God. He guided and instructed them. He gave them the boldness to speak even when threatened. Jesus was with the disciples as a Paraclete but the Holy Spirit would come down and be in them after Jesus goes to heaven.

Rev. Philippians1.2
Q1. (John 14:15-17) In what sense is the Holy Spirit “another” Paraclete? Before Jesus returned to Heaven He promised His disciples He would ask His father to send another comforter, a 'second Paraclete' in the person of the Holy Spirit. Who was the initial Paraclete? As God the Father planned for our return to Him, first He sent His Son to enlighten us and show us how to live in the Kingdom of Heaven, Jesus being the 'first Paraclete'. In what way can the Holy Spirit replace him? When Jesus was 'with' the people He taught them by example, now the Holy Spirit would be in them to motivate them to do the things Jesus did and more. They knew Jesus now they would get to know the Holy Spirit in person. How was he “with” the disciples? When will he be “in” them? When the disciples were first sent out , two by two, by Jesus , the Holy Spirit was with them and they saw miracles happen. After Jesus returned to Heaven the Holy Spirit came to dwell 'in' them , they now were permanently and individually connected to God. Uncle Dave
Q1. (John 14:15-17) In what sense is the Holy Spirit "another" Paraclete? Who was the initial Paraclete? In what way can the Holy Spirit replace him? How was he "with" the disciples? When will he be "in" them? The Holy Spirit is another Paraclete in the way of being a counselor, helper, comforter, etc., It is the voice of the Holy Spirit that (if we listen) that guides us into truth. The original Paraclete was Jesus. It was Jesus who was the way and the truth and with Godly wisdom taught His disciples. The Holy Spirit replaces Him just as Jesus promised He would do because since Jesus was here in the flesh, living as you or me he had a day determined by the Father when He would die. That might sound a bit worldly, but God had a date set when Jesus would bear stripes for our healing and die for the sins of the world. Jesus said He would have to depart so that He could send the Comforter. He was the with the disciples because Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit and the disciples knew who He was in that way. Beginning with the day of Pentecost He was in the disciples when they were filled with Him.
Travis81
In what sense is the Holy Spirit "another" Paraclete? “John 14:16 - And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter (called to one's aid/assist, advocate, advise, intercede, console, help,…), that He may abide with you for ever” Who was the initial Paraclete? Jesus i.e. God - John 14:17 - … but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you …. In what way can the Holy Spirit replace him? I prefer the Holy Spirit in action more so than replace; the Holy Spirt would comfort as He abides … as he dwelleth with …, and shall be in …. How was he "with" the disciples? Jesus dwelled, lived, abided and was at the disciples in the natural during His ministerial years. When will He be "in" them? He would be in the disciples after His ascension upon their receiving Him (The Holy Spirit); He would not forsake them, He would comfort, guide and instruct them as they adhered to His leading. Godswriter
He is another Helper because He will take the place of Jesus our Redeemer. He will be teaching and reminding them of what Jesus taught them while He was on the Earth. The initial Paraclete was our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus was the one who walked with the people on the Earth. Who is the one who healed the sick and caused the lame to walk again and taught the people about the Father which challenged the Pharisees belief system. He will be replacing the Lord by being inside the believer and teaching and guiding and directing them as go through life on daily basis. I believe that once they were sent out to minister that the Holy Spirit was with them He will be in them when Jesus ascends to Heaven
Eilen
The Holy Spirit is another Paraclete because it indwells in believers guiding, counselling and comforting them. The initial paraclete was Jesus whom God sent to teach, guide and comfort his people on earth. The Holy Spirit can replace Jesus and indwell in all believers teaching them the truth about God and His Kingdom. It can also comfort Jesus’s disciples; help them to weather the storms they were destined to face after Jesus’ departure. Jesus was a friend, teacher, healer with His disciples. The Holy Spirit will replace Jesus and be with His disciples and all believers after His death and ascension to His Father’s heavenly kingdom. Debra Grant
Q1. (John 14:15-17) In what sense is the Holy Spirit "another" Paraclete? Who was the initial Paraclete? In what way can the Holy Spirit replace him? How was he "with" the disciples? When will he be "in" them? 1. It will lead, guide, comfort, help, and be with the disciples. "He’s the one who is coming to stand by us" (14:26, cf. 14:16); "the helper" (15:26), and "the divine helper" (16:7). 2. Jesus 3. The Holy Spirit will replace Jesus as an interior presence, always with them, to guide and instruct them. 4. Jesus was with them in human form. Jesus was the one the Father had sent to help them. They experienced Jesus living or abiding "with them" or at their side. 5. When the Father sends the Holy Spirit, this Paraclete will be within them. efeklvn2
The word "another" can mean- 'one more' or 'in addition to a former'. So the Holy Spirit being "another" Paraclete indicates that there was already a former or initial Paraclete, and he was the person of Jesus Christ. Jesus, in bodily form, was not going to be with them 'always' because His departure was both imminent and expedient. But since Jesus would not want to leave them 'Paraclete-less', He assures them that the Holy Spirit would replace Himself, to be with them forever. However, this replacement will only take place after Christ's death, burial, resurrection, and ascension to the Father. The former Paraclete(being Jesus) was "with" the disciples; meaning that He was "external" to them, having his own physical form. But the Holy Spirit will be "in" them, dwelling inside each one of them; starting from Pentecost day.
hanks
Q1. (John 14:15-17) In what sense is the Holy Spirit "another" Paraclete? Who was the initial Paraclete? In what way can the Holy Spirit replace Him? How was He "with" the disciples? When will He be "in" them? Jesus promises that in answer to Him asking the Father, the disciples will receive another Helper. What Jesus meant was that they would receive a Helper – another one like Himself - who will take His place, and who will do His work. He will be with them forever and will be called the Spirit of Truth. Like Jesus, He will teach, strengthen, and intercede for the disciples. He is called the Spirit of Truth because He will reveal spiritual truths. In this way He replaces our Lord Jesus who was the original Paraclete, who intercedes on their behalf with the Father. In other words, they will become richer in having a Helper in heaven, but also the Holy Spirit who will be their Helper here on earth. The Holy Spirit is always under the authority of Jesus; helping us understand His teaching and ministry. The Holy Spirit was “with” the disciples in a general sense, that is among them, but soon, at Pentecost, they will have Him “in” them, that is dwelling in them. Jesus was the initial Paraclete (helper) that was with the disciples while he was on earth and he promised the Holy Spirit as another Paraclete, giving the disciples some idea of what to expect. Just that for the Holy Spirit, he would be within them rather than just being with them. Because Jesus was going to the Father, seated at the right hand of God, the Holy Spirit can replace him by being here on earth to help all born-again disciples to know God and to obey God. Jesus was "with" the disciples when he stay with them during his 3 years ministry on earth. He will be "in" them when they (and all believers) are baptized in the Holy Spirit. Stanley Tavaziva
Jesus Christ is Lord and Our Master, he should call us servants; instead, he calls us friends. How comforting and reassuring to be chosen as Christ’s friends. Because he is Lord and Master, we owe him our unqualified obedience, but most of all, Jesus asks us to obey him because we love him. Jesus made the first choice—to love and to die for us, to invite us to live with him forever. Its up to us to make a choice—to accept or reject him. Without his choice, we would have no choice to make. Jesus commands that you love one another
