(1 Corinthians 12:7; Ephesians 4:11) What is the purpose of spiritual gifts according to 1 Corinthians 12:7? According to Ephesians 4:11? What happens when people don’t employ spiritual gifts for their intended purpose? "Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good." (1 Corinthians 12:7) "And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;" (Ephesians 4:11) So in Corinthians, the purpose of the spiritual gifts was for the common good but in Ephesians it is given to people to equip the saints for ministry and to build up the body of Christ. When people don't employ the spiritual gifts, they are not using the gifts God has given to them so these gifts tend to get weak because and this ends up affecting the church as a whole. MyRockOfAges
Q1. (1 Corinthians 12:7; Ephesians 4:11) What is the purpose of spiritual gifts according to 1 Corinthians 12:7? According to Ephesians 4:11? What happens when people don't employ spiritual gifts for their intended purpose? The manifestation of the Spirit is for every believer to profit with. The main purpose of the gifts of the Spirit is to equip every believer for His ministry, build the Church and lead to unity of faith and maturity of the believer to the measure of the state in the fullness of Christ. The five ministry gifts - apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers each of these gifts are vital to the body of Christ. When the people don’t employ the gifts of the Spirit for the intended purpose of the ministry, this leads to lack in equipped leaders, weakening the Church and lack of unity and maturity, which results in a weak church. But Christ intended a strong warrior bride for Him and He has invested His Spirit with the ministry gifts to ensure a strong church with equipped , mature and united leaders operating in their gifts. Tholang
*The purpose is to empower, edify the body of Christ and for the benefit of all. If they do not use their Spiritual gifts, they remain in their old self, carnal, not effective and do not glorify the Kingdom of God. They do not build the community or the body of Christ. Nana Karlsson
According to 1Corintians 12: 7 the purpose of spiritual gifts is for the common good, that is to build up the body and strengthen God's people. The gifts are not given to us for our own personal use, it is for the body of Christ. The gifts according to Ephesians is given for ministry works. The gifts are given based on grace not merits, they are not rewards for superior spirituality but are given to prepare God's people, for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and on the knowledge of the son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. ( Ephesians 4 : 12-12-13 ). You put the Church in order by training God's people to minister. As they minister effectively, the church is built up and eventually you get to the place where Christ can be seen in Church and in it's people in all His fullness. When people don't employ spiritual gifts for their intended purpose, the church will not be built up, it will be spiritually weak and powerless, no growth and not able to accomplish God's purpose for His people. For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ. What happens when people don't employ spiritual gifts for their intended purpose? The body will not mature, the ministry will be weak, and will not bear fruit. If we dont use them, we might lose them. Like with any gift or talent, practice makes perfect. Krissi
Spiritual gifts in Ephesians and Corinthians are for building up the body of Christ. When people don't use their gifts, they shaft the church out of it's potential. But ... what about tongues? How does that build up the church? And of the three explanations or reasons you gave for spiritual gifts, the last, maturity, seems more pietistic than communal. Ralph, I've been praying to know my spiritual gifts. I don't think I have one. In the natural, I have gifts but they're not infused with any spiritual power. Thank you for your great chart, by the way. I'm looking at it now in a different window. I just don't know how to discern what I'm good at through genetic endowment and a lot of hard work, and what is a spiritual gift. You are worried that people won't exercise their gifts: in contrast, my worry is that talented people may think their abilities are spiritual gifts, and busy themselves in the church, and do damage to the body because what they do doesn't have the imprimatur of the Holy Spirit. What happens when someone thinks he's a teacher but God didn't gift him as a teacher, but ... a giver or exhorter? Is it possible to be very good at something in the natural, and not have that be your spiritual gift?
Katy
Q1. We are all given Spiritual Gifts from God which are energised by the Holy Spirit. We are told in both 1 Corinthians 12v7 and in Ephesians 4v 11 that these gifts are to be used by us for the benefit of the whole church so that our body of believers may be built up and equipped for the service and good works that God wants us to do. When people don’t exercise these gifts they are disobeying God, showing a total lack of understanding about the purpose of their gifts. Also they are dishonouring God by refusing the gift that God is giving them. They are also missing the joy of serving God with their gift, and guilty of depriving their brothers and sisters of the benefits of their gift.
