steve.c
What acts of humility are appropriate for church leaders? How can we discern a person's humility before putting him or her in a place of leadership in the church? What happens when we fail to do this? A leader in the church should be a servant and put his congregation first. He should be humble, caring, prepared to listen and deferential, particularly to those who are disadvantaged. We can examine his record in previous positions and ask those who have been previously ministered by him or who have had authority over him. This should give us a better idea of how a person is to behave but it is impossible to know for certain. A pastor who is proud or overbearing places great strain on the unity of a church. That is why the selection process and our prayers for guidance are so important. Failure extracts a heavy price for Christ's church.
L. Turner
We discern a person's humility through their actions when in position of small things. If they are proud when given a position of authority of any kind, then we know that they will be even more when put in a position of great authority. They should be acting more like Jesus, not power thirsty Hitler. They should demonstrate a true servant's attitude.
Craig
The most appropriate act of humility for all leadership is to be a servant like Jesus Christ. You discern a person's humility by watching him/her over a period of time and by asking them what is their view on humility and servanthood. In addition, you can ask others what they think of that person's humility and servanthood. If a future leader is not observed and interviewed concerning his/her practice and views regarding humility and servanthood, you have no clue what kind of a leader you are getting. Robin D
All Christians should emulate acts of humility regardless of their position in the church. I believe it would be important for leaders to show kindness, humbleness, compassion, love, wisdom, willingness, and eagerness to serve. We can discern a person's humility by watching and listening to them. If we fail to do this, we would hinder our service for the Lord. Tabatha
Q4. (5:5-6) What acts of humility are appropriate for church leaders? How can we discern a person's humility before putting him or her in a place of leadership in the church? What happens when we fail to do this? All of this must be put in the context of how our Lord commands the leadership to submit to Him and follow Him and be humbled before Him so as to do the work totally dependant on His strength. As the leadership demonstrates this attitude those in charge will not only see the example, but will be motivated to do the same. It's one thing for leaders to give commands, it's entirely different to do the very thing they ask of others. By praying and seeking God for discernment regarding placement of leadership, God will reveal the fruit of the person you are seeking for leadership. When we fail to come together and pray for the right person the enemy will deceive. We must always ask God to show us the heart of the person. Also look for mature servants that are not involved with selfish desires of wanting to be exalted. That are more concerned for others than self. This is what Christ has called His leaders to do. But only as those leaders humbly follow Jesus and derive strength from Him will they be able to be the example. ( 1st Peter 5: 5 ) " Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, " God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." ( Proverbs 3: 34 ) Everyone in the Body of Christ is to be practicing humility toward one another. Peter uses a unique phrase, " clothe yourself with humility." The word clothe means to tie a piece of clothing to oneself. For example, slaves used to knot a white scarf or apron over their clothing to distinguish themselves from freeman. The suggestion is that Christians ought to tie humility to their conduct so that everyone is able to recognize them. Peter exhorts the readers to fasten humility to themselves once and for all. Paul put it quite clearly in ( Phil. 2: 3 ) " Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility, consider others better than yourselves.(4) Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also interests of others. Humility speaks of an attitude which puts others first, which thinks of the desires, needs, and ideas of others as more worthy of attention than one's own." When you see this in a person you will know they are leadership potentional. It is when we walk humbly with our God that we will be able to show humility toward one another. And so Peter continues in ( Verse 5 ) " God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. " ( Proverbs 3:34 ) Christ's humility gained for us our ultimate exaltation. If Christ can humble Himself before the Father for our good, then to follow His example would be to humble ourselves before our God for the good of others and to help them in their walk with Christ. Does God care for you? You better believe it. Is He concerned with everything that's going on in your life? Yes! He's a loving Father who wants us to care for Him and love Him as the loving Father He is, by trusting Him and following where He leads as we humble ourselves before Him. Giving all the credit to the Lord for everything that goes on in their lives. Giving to others before giving to one's self. Not being a dictator over the church and be a good servant to the church people and obey God. Actions speaks louder than words. Watch they way they operate in the church and out of the church. We create a problem for ourselves and the purpose of bringing people to Christ in that particular church will fail because people will not trust the leader. How can we discern a person's humility before putting him or her in a place of leadership in the church? What happens when we fail to do this? Discernment is one of the gifts of the Spirit. As with the disciples when they cast lots, the only safe way to discern a person's heart is by honestly seeking God's. If we fast and pray and earnestly seek God, He will reveal to us whom we should have in leadership roles. We simply cannot and must not trust ourselves to do it as only God knows the heart. Failure to seek God's will, will result in the sort of disasters that befell Israel.

kenny
Q4. (5:5-6) What acts of humility are appropriate for church leaders? How can we discern a person's humility before putting him or her in a place of leadership in the church? What happens when we fail to do this? I believe there are certain traits which true spirit filled Christians display, those of love, humility, sadness for those who persecute the church as well as radiating the fragrance of our Lord, which makes both believers and non believers alike sense Gods presence. All this being said, we live in a world of charlatans and deception, one can never be to careful. We often tend to shy away from turning people down or rebuking them on a scriptural basis, for fear of reprisal or simply for not wanting to be judgmental of others. I would have to classify this as sitting on the fence, God empowers us as part of His body, to be discerning as well as to take responsibility for the well being of the church in accordance with His will. If we don't do this, we will bring His church into disrepute and could be responsible for leading the flock astray.

elizabeth kerr
Every Christian is supposed to be humble in attitude, in word, and in actions before God and other people just like Jesus was. The church leaders are therefore supposed to be humble because they are Christians, not because they are leaders. However, as leaders, they will be more in the public eye and others will notice their humility or lack of it more than that of the rest of us. We must observe and test the words and actions of a candidate for leadership in a multitude of situations (and especially situations in which they are considered leaders in and out of the church), over a long continuous time, looking for a consistent and persisting pattern of humility in attitude, word, and behavior. If we don't, we may (not for sure will) end up with a leader who thinks he is superior to the rest of us, does not submit to God as his Sovereign Lord and, therefore, treats others in a domineering, exploitative, and abusive way. Such a leader will damage the congregation and maybe destroy it. He will also damage and/or destroy other Christians' (especially new Christians') relationships with Jesus, with other Christians, and with other congregations. We need to remember that pride, the opposite of humility, is a basic human evil hidden deep in our souls. Satan knows it is there and is always attacking us to try to revive it and return it to its controlling position in our lives. So, we cannot assume or guarantee that any person who is humble today will not sin tomorrow and exalt himself, becoming openly proud, arrogant, and haughty. We need to pray always that God will help us overcome the temptations to this sin of pride.
Craig
Q4. (5:5-6) What acts of humility are appropriate for church leaders? How can we discern a person's humility before putting him or her in a place of leadership in the church? What happens when we fail to do this? Humility begins with church leaders submitting their wills to God; applying Biblical principles to their lives; and treating all congregation members with dignity and respect. The church leader providing leadership for the church also places the needs of others before himself. He applies the principles of 1 Cor. 13 to all his relationships. A person's humility can be discerned by the testimony; the witness of others he has ministered to or is currently ministering to; and the evaluation of past leadership positions held. When past leadership performance is not reviewed the success of the leader's performance in the pending position is chancey at best. The Pastor and the church really don't know what they are getting by way of leadership.
lighthouse2014
Q4. (5:5-6) What acts of humility are appropriate for church leaders? How can we discern a person's humility before putting him or her in a place of leadership in the church? What happens when we fail to do this? The acts of humility that are appropriate for a church leader would be first, trust worthy, humble meek, modest and have a gift to lead. They must also know that they remember who God is and who they really are. To discern a person's humility before putting them in a place of leadership in the church, the person must be willing to serve, be humble, submissive to the elders and of course a God fearing person. If we fail to put a person in a leadership position without first checking to see if he or she is qualified for the job, they could lead the congregation astray. They could be money hungry for gain and exploit their authority over others. Worst of all the congregation could dwindle down to only a few people. How can we discern a person's humility before putting him or her in a place of leadership in the church? What happens when we fail to do this? Church leaders should model Jesus in their behaviour. Not taking the top seat. Not acting as one who is above the simplest and poorest person in the flock. Being prepared to wash the feet of their beloved brothers and sisters. Not “bellowing” at people – just loving them and thereby earning the right to speak into their lives. Being people of prayer and the Word. We discern a person’s true humility over time. Let them serve or have a record of true service before appointing them. If we do not do this, only to find out later that they are proud, self-serving, and just filling a post, or a job, then life in the church will be disrupted and the flock will be damaged and confused. The elders are to try to understand young people and the young are to try to listen to the elders. Observation is very important when you are seeking to put someone in position of leadership. Do that person attend bible study, Sunday School and/or church services? Doing these things show a willingness to learn God's word and to be a servant of the Lord. When we fail to do this, that person may not fulfill his/her duties as we would like.

How can we discern a person's humility before putting him or her in a place of leadership in the church? What happens when we fail to do this? There are no acts of humility. Observe Jesus -- He simply moved on to the next need. Look at what He did when wrongly and unjustly accused and sent with a cross and a crown of thorns to Calvary -- nothing, other than to forgive His tormentors and seek mercy for those also being crucified with Him -- yet He could have, but knew His Father's purpose in Calvary and obeyed. Being selfless and thinking of others and their good is strongly linked to humility. We cannot have true faith without humility. Observing the heart and faith and words of people being considered for leadership reflects their humility. We are imperfect and need to lean on God's understanding by seeking Him in earnest conversation and pray. We need to be patient and continue to wait on the Lord before making an important decision. Lord, grant our leaders wisdom and patience in making decisions about leadership in Your church.
