Peter's instrcution to guide us in spiritual warfare are to be self-controlled, be alert, resist temptation, be faithful, and be willing to suffer. These instructions are similar to Paul's instructions in Ephesians 6:10-7 in that faith and prayer are essential to overcome our adversay. We must be strong in the Lord and wear the whole armor of God.

Peter tells us to 1. be aware that the devil does exist and is dangerous and cunning. 2. Be disciplined in our faith 3. Resist the devil at all times 4. Be alert so that you can recognise the devil's wiles 5. Remember that Satan can be overcome, he is not invincible. 6. As a Christian be prepared to suffer persecution, yet be victorious through faith and prayer.

Extra: The instructions are similar yet different from Paul's. Paul also tells us that our enemy is not flesh and blood and we must be aware of him. Further he gives us specific tools with which to arm and gird ourselves -- the helmet of salvation through Jesus Christ, the belt of Truth, abide in Jesus, He is the Truth; the shoes of the Gospel of Peace, the Goodnews of Christ that brings peace; the shield of faith, our belief in Jesus to which we must be steadfast; the sword, the word of God which can destroy the enemy and which we must use at all times as we remain in constant prayer. Paul tells us in a more straight forward way what must be done to overcome the enemy whom we must face because there is no covering for our back. We cannot turn and run; satan is to be faced and defeated.

What instructions does Peter give us to guide us in spiritual warfare? Extra credit: How are these instructions similar or different than Paul's instructions in Ephesians 6:10-17?

Peter's instructions in summary are as follows: be self-controlled, be alert. resist, keep faith and be prepared to suffer. In Ephesians the instructions are similar but with a slhtly different emphasis. Paul says "be strong in the Lord" and "stand firm", which is the same as Peter's injunction to resist. Self-control and alertness find their equivalents in the breastplate of righteousness and having feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the Gospel. Keeping the faith is described as having the shield of faith but is amplified by the factors that help us keep it: the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit. Paul's exhortion is a call to arms. Implicit in that call is the preparedness to suffer for our faith. We are at war and wars have casualties. The Christian soldier knows that he must suffer to prevail in this constant battle with the devil and his demons.

:) In 1st Peter 5:8-9, Peter is telling us to be self-controlled and alert to the wiles of the devil and to stand in faith and resist him. The instructions give by the Apostle Paul is very similar to those of Peter's. They both are telling us to be stong and stand in faith and to resist the devil. But not in our own strength, but in the power of the Lord. They both are encouraging us to stand strong in FAITH.

Peter encourages us to resist satan, to keep our faith and be willing to suffer for Jesus Christ.

Paul tells the Ephesians to:

- Be strong in the Lord and His mighty power. God's power is invincible.

- Stand your ground ... stand firm. As Christians we should withstand the assaults of satan and all evil.

- We can stand our ground with truth; righteousness, readiness; faith; salvation and the word of God. Peter writes in 2 Peter 1:3: "His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness." (NIV)

Peter and Paul are providing similar instructions, however, Paul provides more detailed instructions on how to withstand the satanic assaults upon us.

Peter instructs us to be watchful, disciplined, and strong in our faith. These instructions are similar because the message is to stand against the devil.

Peter's teaching is on how to be alert, or on-guard. Paul's teaching is how to use protection against the devil.

Q3. (5:8-9) What instructions does Peter give us to guide us in spiritual warfare? Extra credit: How are these instructions similar or different than Paul's instructions in Ephesians 6:10-17?

That's why Peter said in ( 1st Peter 5:7 ) " Cast all your anxiety on Him cause He cares for you." Peter understands that life all by itself can bring anxious times where we have a problem trusting our God, but he points out that there are other forces in place to heighten that anxiety and to turn our eyes away from our Lord and Savior and so he continues in ( 1st peter 5:8 ) " Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."

In ( Eph. 6:10-17 ) Pauls instructions are similar and different in places.

We need only trust what He has stated. Paul records for us what God desires in this area of war with the enemy. " Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. ( verse 11 ) Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. ( verse 12 ) For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against forces of evil in the heavenly realms. ( Verse 13 ) Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. ( Verse 14 ) Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, ( verse 15 ) and with your feet fitted with readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. ( Verse 16 ) In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. ( verse 17 ) Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."

The Spirit of God together with His word are the weapons we have been given to go out into this world in the power of the Spirit to accomplish His will, which is to lift up Christ and bear witness to His greatness as He has overcome the enemy and sin and the grave.

This is what Peter has in mind when he continues in ( 1st. Peter 5:9 ) " Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

Actively standing firm in our faith involves all that Paul spoke of in Ephesians six which involves prayer, the word of God, our salvation, praise, the help of fellow believers, living with thankfulness because of our salvation, and seeking the power of the Holy Spirit who enables us to walk in the Spirit in these ways.

Q3. (5:8-9) What instructions does Peter give us to guide us in spiritual warfare? Extra credit: How are these instructions similar or different than Paul's instructions in Ephesians 6:10-17?

http://www.joyfulheart.com/forums/index.ph...;f=43&t=191

In this world with all the worldly temptations it is very easy to give in to what the world says is ok. So Peter is telling us to be on guard, to be wary, to critically look at what the world is encouraging us to get involved in. ' Sail away with Mainstay', ' After action, Satisfaction' are just some examples. Self-control is for me the most important. Resisting is sometimes hard, but the Lord has said He will give us the strength.

Putting on Spiritual Armour is very similar. We are to clothe ourselves in spiritual ways of righteousness, truth, The Word, Salvation etc.....

Peter tells us to stand firm and resist the devil. Paul tells us to stand and put on the full armor of God. We are told by both men that our faith and prayer is the key to our victory over the tricks of the enemy. We need God to help through it all. We are not to be afraid of the enemy we are to know that the enemy is defeated because of what Christ did for us on the cross.

Be alert, stand firm, resit and keep our faith in Jesus.

Paul says take uo the armor of God which is righteousness, preparation of the gospel of peace and the spirit of God. One says stand firm the other says take up the armor of God. They have both diff. and similarities. Both require Faith.

Q3. (5:8-9) What instructions does Peter give us to guide us in spiritual warfare? Extra credit: How are these instructions similar or different than Paul's instructions in Ephesians 6:10-17?

Peter urges us to be vigilant, to never let our guard down. To have a firm foundation in our faith - it helps to know what we believe in and why - memorise Bible verses.

To stand firm against temptation, even the minor, everyone else, temptations. To be able to recognise temptation, we need to know what God considers sin.

TO KNOW WE ARE NOT IN THIS ALONE. To acquire spiritual friends who will help keep us strong.

Eph 6:10-17, gives us more detail, not to do it in our strength, but to put on God's armour. To recognise it as a spiritual battle

To use truth, righteousness, evangelism, faith and salvation as our weapons and above all else to pray, at all times; in all places; for all situations.

Q3. (5:8-9)

What instructions does Peter give us to guide us in spiritual warfare?

Extra credit: How are these instructions similar or different than Paul's instructions in Ephesians 6:10-17?

As a guide in spiritual warfare we are to be self-controlled taking a realistic approach to life, and to be intelligent concerning the evils of the devil. We must be vigilant, alert, in other words prepared to meet every attack. We are not to surrender to his tricks and lies, but to resist through prayer and God

Paul goes into more detail but the instructions are essentially similar. We must remember that Paul had the ancient equivalent of a present day doctorate education while Peter got his degree at the University of Life. They both emphasize the importance of faith and resisting the devil.

Interestingly, Peter considered Paul's writings to be every bit as authoritative as Scripture, even as Paul was probably still writing them!

3a)Peter instructs us to be 1/self-controlled free selves from mental spiritual confusion, lead disciplined well balanced lives. 2/Be alert to what’s happening around us, not assuming we are safe, we have a cunning foe and must look out for him. 3/We must resist him, stand firm against sin &temptation, putting on the full armour of God. 4/Keeping the faith firmly, steadfastly even when opposed. 5/We should be prepared to suffer hardship for our faith as part of this spiritual warfare, and decide ahead of conflict to prepare ourselves with armour. Through prayer and faith we can defeat him, Jesus has the victory.

b)Very similar in Ephesians with more detail about how we are strong in the Lord, our strength is Spirit in us, putting on the full armour aids us in standing firm against devil’s schemes, against principalities and powers/forces of evil one in the heavenly realms with belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, feet fitted with the readiness of the gospel of peace, with the shield of faith, helmet of salvation and sword of the Spirit, the word of God.

We must be so committed to Jesus that we are willing to cling to Him and obey Him no matter what form Satan's attacks take, and they may well be deadly to our bodies.  But

-Jesus suffered through the normal difficulties of human life here on earth, and then He was tortured and crucified because He publicly proclaimed that He is God  (Matthew 27:11-56; Mark 14:53-15:41; Luke 22:63-23:49; John 18:19-19:57; Acts 2:22-23)

-Many Christians throughout history have been persecuted through harassment, ridicule and mocking, and even imprisonment, torture, and execution because they refused to deny Jesus and give their allegiance and their obedience to the earthly government

-In the Bible, we are repeatedly warned that Christians who publicly acknowledge Jesus as their Lord and obey Him rather than the government will be persecuted and experience suffering (Matthew 5:10-12; John 15:18-20; 1 Thessalonians 3:4; 2 Timothy 3:12; and more)

While Peter and Paul taught us how to resist Satan's temptations in somewhat different ways,  their goal was the same:  that Christians under attack stand firm in their faith in Jesus and remain faithful and obedient to Jesus through the end to the glory of God.

Q3. (5:8-9) What instructions does Peter give us to guide us in spiritual warfare? Extra credit: How are these instructions similar or different than Paul's instructions in Ephesians 6:10-17?

First Peter teaches us to be alert and aware of our great enemy Satan.  Second, stand firm against him and be strong in our faith.  Third, endure and have patience through suffering.  By daily prayer, Bible study, praise and worship, and service we will stay alert in our defense against Satan.

Likewise, Paul taught us to be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.  We are to stay firm in God's truth and righteousness; our strong faith in God serves as a shield again Satan's attacks; rest in the peace of the Gospel; accept Jesus as our salvation; and know and speak the Word of God into our lives.  These things will create a defense against satanic influence and attacks.  Both Peter and Paul teach the same strategies to stand firm against the devil.

The instructions Peter gives us for spiritual warfare are to be self controlled, alert, resist the devil and stand firm in the faith.

These instructions by Peter are perhaps similar to Paul's letter in Ephesians 6:10-17. In resisting the devil Paul says to put the shield of faith as in 1 Peter, stand says stand firm in the faith. Peter says be self controlled, Paul says put on the armor of faith to stand against the devil. Peter says be alert, Paul says in Ephesians 6;18, be alert and keep on praying for all the Lord's people. Paul says stand firm with belt of truth buckled around our waist with the breast plate of righteousness, feet fitted with readiness that comes from the gospel, take up the shield of faith to extinguish the flaming arrows of the devil and the helmet of salvation with the sword of the spirit. In Isaiah 11:5, he says when the Lord returns he will have righteousness for his belt and a sash cord of faith around his waist.

Who but Peter would have sensed the urgency behind his instructions which parallel Jesus'! From a vessel for God's revelation of the charcter of Jesus to "Satan; from till death do us part to 3-time betrayal of knowing Jesus; asked to watch to deep in sleep. Paul differs from Peter primarily as a result of Paul's experiences: ... far greater labors, far more imprisonments, with countless beatings, and often near death. Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one. Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea; on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. And, apart from other things, there is the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for all the churches." (2 Cor 11:23–28). Hence Paul in Ephesians 6:10-17 delineates his armour as well as his Armour Bearer. Knowing full well that 'what He's done for others He'll do for you - his beloved.

Finally, who but Paul would know from experience - rather than from book-learning - "Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands (sufficient in himself) take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he (God) will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he (God) will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it." (1 Cor 10:12–13).

Peter says we should, to be self-controlled, be alert, resist devil and standing firm in faith. It is similar because Paul also asked us we should stand firm in faith.
