Pauline
Acts 1:4-8 Q1. (a) Jesus' disciples are not to leave Jerusalem and return to their homes because Jesus promised that they would be "baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence" (later/soon)". (confirmed in Luke 24:49). As a down payment the indwelling Spirit is the security deposit for the salvation of all believers (Ephesians 1:13, 14). (b) In what ways does the Spirit's coming represent: A filling? Acts 4:4 .. And they were filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this (the Holy Spirit) that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. (Acts 2:33) There is an implied filling as when one pours out something there needs to be a receptacle in which that "something" needs to poured into. In this case the Holy Spirit (the something) is poured into the approximately 120 persons present (the receptacles). When Peter addresses the crowd in Chapter 2 he refers to the prophet Joel ... "and it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh ... " A coming upon? In Luke 24:49 - Jesus says "and, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. Strongs' definition (G1746) - endyō - "endued" gives the impression of being enveloped by the Holy Spirit ἐνδύω endýō, en-doo'-o; from G1722 and G1416 (in the sense of sinking into a garment); to invest with clothing (literally or figuratively):—array, clothe (with), endue, have (put) on. A baptism? The baptism of the Holy Spirit seals and immerses the believer in the presence of God at the moment of their belief in Christ (different from water baptism which is an outward and public sign of discipleship). John the Baptist baptized and ceremonially washed Jews' sins away in a ritual bath (mikvah) in the Jordan river.
Old Jerry
The disciples are not to leave Jerusalem and return to their homes because they will be given the Holy Spirit. It will fill the disciples in their hearts and that will give them the power to spread the Good News. It will be as they had been baptized in the Spirit. Chyko
I think the disciples had to wait in Jerusalem as an indication that patience and endurance are important virtues for Christians in our walk with God. We must learn to wait upon the Lord in all matters of concern.
Simo
Jesus disciples are not leave Jerusalem because Jesus has instructed them in Acts 1:8 to tarry in Jerusalem so that they could receive power from on high. The Holy Spirit coming represents a filling in that, He seals our hearts and abides with us forever cf. 2 Cor. 1:21-22. A coming upon, as He overshadows us through the anointing of God; this could be witnessed solidly with the Old Testament Kings and Prophets cf. 1 Samuel 16:13, Isaiah 61:1. A baptism, as Jesus was introduced by the John the John the Baptist to be the one to baptised repentant believers with the Holy Ghost and Fire. Irmela
Q1. (Acts 1:4-8) Why aren't Jesus' disciples to leave Jerusalem and return to their homes? In what ways does the Spirit's coming represent a filling? In what ways does the Spirit's coming represent a coming upon? In what ways does the Spirit's coming represent a baptism? The Apostles and other followers of Jesus could easily have gotten disillusioned and gone back to their original duties and this time it would have been to "emptiness", because Jesus had called them from there to follow Him, as He was going from place to place. So before they returned to their tasks , be it housewives, fishermen, craftsmen, preachers and teachers of the Word, etc, Jesus had more for them. Together they could face rejection and persecution easier and become stronger before they would be dispersed, as they later were. But first they had to WAIT together, in one place and receive the promise, the COMFORTER, the ONE Who would remind them, bring to remembrance, whatever they needed at a given time. The One Who would strengthen them, make them bold and enable them to stand in whatever circumstance they found themselves in. To be filled gives the picture that there previously was a space, and it is now filled. Take the group that had been walking with Jesus and been around Him, they were now at a place where that part of their lives was empty. It needed to be filled, not with disillusionment or disappointment or uncertainty, . . . but with POWER and with certainty that they could continue in the WAY Jesus had directed them. To come upon them gives a picture of something that is not distant. It is right there upon them. Not far away, but right there. The certainty that they are not alone, the Spirit is with them at all time. He is taking the guiding role, the decision making role, etc. The baptism was similar to a ritual cleansing, the tatters or remembrance of the old, symbolically cleansed or washed off and rising refreshed and new. The baptism in the Spirit was like putting off the old ideas and being refreshed and clothed with new.
Krissi
God could have sent the Holy Spirit on each of them individually in their own homes, but chose, instead, to send the Spirit to them corporately, as a group, which may be a hint to what the church should be like. The body of believers got the Spirit at once, not individuals. What we do today is focus on individual salvation and Spiritual indwelling. I wonder if this is right. Yet when the Spirit comes, He comes within us as individuals. Each of us are indwelt by the Spirit by choice, or so it seems. There's a odd tension, then, between corporate and individual, or church and convert/believer. Filling ... coming upon ... baptism -- these are ways of describing the mysterious and indescribable, the willingness of God to come within us. Words aren't enough. God is IN ME!! Isn't that amazing? OlaoluIdowu
Without the Holy Spirit, we are powerless. We cannot do the work of the Gospel unless we are empowered. That empowerment comes when the Holy Spirit "come upon" us. By going their separate ways, the disciples will face continued discouragement from those who crucified Christ. They need to be together to encourage each other. Also, as we see later there are important preparations to be done for the work before them, like electing a 12th disciple. The coming of the Spirit is a filling because the believer suddenly realizes that a void has been filled. Something missing is suddenly made available. Those lacking courage, become courageous. The fearful suddenly becomes bold. The stammerer becomes eloquent. The coming of the Spirit rectifies a deficiency necessary for evangelism. crissy464
Jesus told the disciples that they were to wait for the Holy Spirit and they would receive power, and they would be his witnesses, and they would tell people about Jesus everywhere, to the end of the earth. The Holy Spirit is a crucial part of Christianity as it empowers believers to live a holy life and share the gospel with others.
Nevardo
Q1. (Acts 1:4-8) Why aren't Jesus' disciples to leave Jerusalem and return to their homes? In what ways does the Spirit's coming represent a filling? A coming upon? A baptism? The disciples could not return to their homes beause the comandment of Jesus was that they must wait for the promise of the father in Jerusalem. They must be together. The bautism through the Holy Spirit represents a filling like the exemple of bautism by water by Jhon. The phrase "You will be baptizedby the Holy Spirit" represents a coming upon because it would occurr in a time. Jesus himself called "bautism" because like the bautism in water now the believers are immersed in the presence of the Holy spirit.
