Pastor Ralph
Q2. (Acts 2:11-13) Why are these messages in tongues so convincing to the crowds? Krissi
The speaking in their own language was another miracle, much like the other miracles in the Bible -- these miracles, in themselves, were awesome. To some degree, miracles are convincing, though some people obviously found a way to discount what had happened by saying the men were drunk. It was the content of their language that probably convinced onlookers, the fact that they were praising God so boisterously and overtly. I think of the Old Testament prophets as having a similar bubbling-over, ecstatic speech. But, again, people in other religions and cultures work themselves into a froth, flailing things against their bodies and even starving themselves, so religious ecstacy isn't, in itself, a proof of God's speech. It must have been the content of what was spoken. I wonder what they said!
Luke
Jews of the “diaspora” (dispersion; cf. James 1:1; 1 Peter 1:1) were … in Jerusalem for the feast. Perhaps they were bilingual, speaking both Greek and their native languages. They were dumbfounded to hear Jews from Galilee speaking the languages of peoples surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. It is a question whether only the Twelve spoke in tongues or all 120. Several factors support the idea of only the Twelve being involved in this phenomenon: They are referred to as Galileans (Acts 2:7; cf. 1:11–13). Peter stood up with “the Eleven” (2:14). The nearest antecedent of “they” in verse 1 is the “apostles” in 1:26. However, a problem with this view is that the number of languages listed in 2:9–11 is more than 12. But one apostle could have spoken more than one language, in sequence. Still it is possible that all 120 spoke in tongues. Since the majority of them were from Galilee they could have been called Galileans. The references to the Twelve would have indicated they were the leaders of the 120. The topic the people discussed in all these languages was the wonders of God. It seems they were praising God. Their message was not one of repentance; it was not the gospel. The only other event of such magnitude was at the tower of Babel (Gen 11:1-9), which is the portrays the dispersion of peoples by their tongues. From the scattering to the unification of God's people through His word in Acts 2 and the presence of God then and now through the Holy Spirit. Kaleb
These messages in tongues so convincing to the crowd due to the fact that it was amazing. They were highly perplexed, Imagine in an environment that you don't expect this; that you hear someone speaking in your own native language, and above all the different languages even your colleagues from other countries say they hear the same thing. I can't even imagine this! It's so hard to explain. The content of the message was so clear ; they were telling the mighty deeds, wonderful works, in general the greatness of the highly exalted and mighty GOD. We also find these messages in Old Testament books of the bible. Especially prophetic books. But even some of the books of Moses, among those five. For example in Exodus chapter 14. Katy
Q2.The messages are convincing to the people because they hear it in their own dialects. The people know these men are Galilean and wonder how can they possibly know their dialect, only spoken in their particular area. They hear them “Declaring the wonders of God”. We see the mighty deeds of God talked about in Deuteronomy 11v2, and in the Psalms, 71v19, 76v4,89v11-13.

hanks
Q2. (Acts 2:11-13) Why are these messages in tongues so convincing to the crowds? What is the content of the messages the believers are speaking out in these various languages? In what kind of Bible books do we see this kind of content? The crowd was a multi-lingual crowd, and they heard the wonders of God being declared in their own language! Yet the speakers were known to be Galileans (7), not the most cultured in Israel. This speaking in different languages was one of three supernatural signs that accompanied the Holy Spirit coming upon the people. They heard the wind-like sound, saw the fire-like apparition, and spoke the different languages. We see that three of the higher senses were affected. It is not surprising that the crowd’s reaction was one of bewilderment (6). The Psalms are full of praise to God.

In what kind of Bible books do we see this kind of content?http://www.joyfulheart.com/forums/topic/2040-q2-tongues/ The crowds could hear the messages in their own languages. This convinced them that God’s power was responsible for the various spontaneous tongues The believers were declaring the wonders, power, mighty deeds of God and giving Him praise and worship. This kind of power that resulted in outburst of praise or messages happened the Spirit came on Moses and the Elders in the wilderness Numbers 11:24-29 and on Saul when anointed King, 1Samuel 10:6,10 and on Saul and his soldiers when they went to arrest David, 1Samuel 19:20-21, 23-

crissy464
They were curious to hear Jews speaking in tongue. They were speaking about the wonders of God. It seems that many of the tongue-speakers are having an ecstatic experience that they can't control. But this is not merely some sort of emotional situation to be diagnosed. This is a work of the Holy Spirit, very similar to inspired prophecy.
