Q17. Shepherds

Q1, The angels had told the Shepherds in v. 11 “ Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord”. Verse 12 goes on to tell them “ You will find Him wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger “. The shepherds just had to work out which manger in which stable. But I am sure God would have guided them in some way to the right place, although we are not told that.

Q2.The shepherds response was to go and tell everyone the news about what had happened. The people’s response was one of amazement at all the shepherds told  them. Then the shepherds made their way back to their flocks praising and glorifying God, it was a night like no other.
Q3. Mary’s response was to store everything up in her heart and in times of quietness and solitude to meditate and wonder at all the wonderful and amazing things that had happened over the last year.

The angels told the shepherds where to look and what to look for. They searched until they found the One described.

The shepherds told everyone they could about what they had experienced in the night watch and then about the reality of finding the Child. I imagine their story was told with excitement and awe, which elicited amazement in the hearers.

Mary pondered thoughtfully all these amazing events that she had experienced in the last year. She would have been awestruck knowing that God was using her, Joseph, and her Son to accomplish God’s plan of redemption. From her own lips: He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, even as he said to our fathers. (Luke 1:54-55)

What was the shepherds’ response to finding Christ?

The shepherds didn't doubt the message, and seemed to be expecting to find Him, though they didn't know exactly where He was. Didn't the star hover over Jesus, guiding not only the shepherds, but the foreign kings or astrologers?

They were amazed, not at finding Him, but at the entirety of the event. I imagine them peering into a stone trough at a newborn, and wonder if Jesus looked any different than other babies. Medieval and renaissance painters tend to imagine him giving off light, or having a halo.  I don't see this in scripture.

What was Mary’s reaction to the shepherds’ story?

Her reaction was much like that of the shepherds --a simple, faith-filled acceptance and wonder.

Q17. (Luke 2:15-20) How did the shepherds know to find the Holy Family? According to verses 17, 18, and 20, what was their response to finding Christ? What was Mary's reaction?
They did not hesitate and hurried off looking for a baby wrapped in cloths, lying in a manger (2:12). I can imagine it would not be an unusual sign to see a baby wrapped in clothes, but it would be strange to see a baby lying in a manger - a feeding trough. Therefore, easily found. The combination of what the angels told them and the finding of the baby in a manger inspired them to tell everyone what had happened. The shepherd’s good news amazed all who heard it, recognising that something significant had happened, even if they didn’t really understand it. The shepherds on returning to their flocks, were overjoyed at all they had heard and seen, and overflowing in their worship of God (2:20). Mary’s reaction was different to those of the shepherds. She had a deeper understanding of what was going on and calmly took it all in, meditating over it in her heart, seeking to understand the deep meaning of it all. As Mary held this tiny baby, she must have wondered at all that God was doing, and who her son would grow up to become. Gabriel had told her that the little boy would reign forever (1:31–33); the shepherds reported the angel’s words - He is the Messiah, the Lord (2:11).

The Shepard’s knew where to find the Babe because the Angel told them.  In the city of David in a manger wrapped In swaddling  clothes.
The response to finding  the Christ child was that they went out and made known to all those abroad,  what was told to them, and I’m sure how it was delivered.  And they left that place worshipping and Glorifying God for all the things that had heard and seen.

Mary pondered what the shepherds told her, as she pondered everything in her heart that had taken place in her life over the past 9 or 10 months.

Luke 2:15-20) How did the shepherds know to find the Holy Family?

According to verses 17, 18, and 20, what was their response to finding Christ?

What was Mary's reaction?

They searched and found them. They had been told the Babe would be lying in a manger. They knew where the "stables" /"caves" were, where there would be mangers. (possibly for the sacrificial lambs)

They made known what they had been told about Him. Whoever heard them were amazed. The shepherds returned to their flocks, praising God.

Mary kept these things in her heart. Weighing them and pondering about them.

Q17. (Luke 2:15-20) How did the shepherds know to find the Holy Family?

I personally think that the Holy Spirit led them to the right place without a search all over the town. If not, then it is possible that they probably search every likely place where animals were kept and looked for the place where a anger was to locate him.

According to verses 17, 18, and 20, what was their response to finding Christ?

They were excited and spread the good news, the story that was told to them by the angels, which they had found exactly as they were told, - that a Saviour who is the Messiah and Lord has been born in the city of David.

What was Mary's reaction?

Mary treasured and pondered all that was said.

The shepherds knew to find the Holy Family because the angels told them there was a Holy Family and how to find them.  He was to be found in a manager in Bethlehem wrapped in swaddling clothes.  The manger indicated that He would be found in a stable because the manger was the trough where the cattle were fed.

When the shepherds rejoice when they found Christ giving praise to God and tell the good news of Christ's birth.

And Mary remember all that was said about the birth of her child, pondering those thing in her heart.

How did the shepherds know to find the Holy Family?

  • The good news was announced to them by an Angel, who explained to them where they would find this baby Messiah, wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger

According to verses 17, 18, and 20, what was their response to finding Christ

  • They were filled with  amazement  and "great joy" and were full of praise
  • They felt the urge to go and confirm the good news as well as offer their praises
  • ---They evangelised, i.e. spread the good news
  • They glorified and praised God

What was Mary's reaction?

  • Mary treasured all the happenings and pondered them in her heart. She had a lot to think about
    • her situation
    • her relationship with Joseph
    • her aunt Elizabeth and her husband Zachariah's situation
    • the connection between John and her son Jesus
    • and probably a lot more about her folks
Edited by EMC
Revisited the scripture and listened again to the audio in a more relaxed manner. Had studied this day in a hurry and hadn't meditated enough about what I understood from it all
