God promised Simeon that he would see this child and he kept his promise. Simeon’s prophecy was fulfilled when Jesus was crucified on the cross. LT Lady Posted December 17, 2021 Report Share Posted December 17, 2021 The Holy Spirit directed Simeon to the temple that day because the time had come for the fulfillment of God’s revelation to him, that he would not die until his very own eyes would see the Messiah. God orchestrated the arrival of both the holy family and this righteous believer at the same time. I think Luke includes this story because: 1) He shows the careful obedience of Jesus’ earthly parents to obey the law of God, and to raise their children to do so as well. When Jesus became a man, no one could say that he was not devoted to the Jewish faith. 2) One of the purposes of Luke’s book was to show that Messiah came for the Gentiles as well as the Jews. Simeon’s prophecy states this in verses 31-32. Jesus caused division among the Jewish leaders and the people of the day because of his radical teaching about the true meaning of love for God. The leaders true hearts were revealed as they dealt with Jesus and later with His followers. Most of the common people also turned against Him when they called out for His crucifixion. And this was the day the Holy Spirit inspired him to go to the temple and he went and met the family with baby Jesus and he prophesied about Him. Q2. It is recorded in Luke’s gospel for our instruction. It shows us just how in control God is , everything happens as He promises. We can see from reading scriptures that Simeon’s prophecy has been fulfilled. Q3. The prophecy was fulfilled when Jesus was rejected by the Jewish leaders and eventually crucified. Simeon’s prophecy about Mary was fulfilled when Jesus was not accepted by the Jewish leader and she had to watch Him suffer and die nailed to a cross. God had told Simeon that before he dies he would see the Lord’s Messiah, and when baby Jesus was brought to the temple, the Holy Spirit directed Simeon to go to the temple as well. God always keeps His promises. Being a Greek, and Gentile Christian; Luke often wrote for the Gentiles. He was also a close friend of Paul and had accompanied him on his journeys in Gentile territory. So, he wrote that Jesus Christ will be a light to bring revelation to the Gentiles (His First Advent) and to shine in glory on Your people Israel (His Second Advent). The salvation of Jesus began with Israel but was always to be extended beyond Israel. The idea of salvation for the Gentiles is set forth many times in the Gospel of Luke. Simeon spoke prophetically to Mary. Our response to Jesus will determine our destiny. If we humbled ourselves, repented of our sins, and put our trust in Him, we would rise and be blessed. On the other hand, if we are arrogant, unrepentant, and unbelieving, we would fall and be punished. His very presence on earth proved a tremendous rebuke to sin and unholiness, and thus brought out the bitter animosity of the human heart. But, it's recorded in scripture so it must be for our sake, too -- I'm not sure what we receive from knowing about Simeon except it's a further confirmation of Jesus Messiahship to the Jews and, as Hanks noted below, a confirmation to the gentiles that the covenant had now expanded to include them. 4 hours ago, hanks said: Being a Greek, and Gentile Christian; Luke often wrote for the Gentiles. Simeon had been waiting for the Messiah to come and it was revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord's Christ. He was moved on by the Holy Spirit to go to the temple the day Jesus was circumcised and dedicated to the Lord. He was sent for the prophetic praise of Jesus coming, who He was and what He came to do. b. This incident was recorded in Luke's Gospel, because it is very important and it is a fulfillment of O.T. prophecy, as in Isaiah 49:6 and elsewhere. People would not believe Him, reject Him and finally crucify Him and He really came to free and deliver them. c. To miraculously be the one that will perform he usual needed rites for baby Jesus and mother. But more significantly, to further pronounce through prophesy, what Jesus will do in confirmation to what the angels have announced. Another reason is to reward Simeon, the just and committed servant of God, the privilege to see Jesus and then die peacefully as he had been looking forward to. Why do you think this incident is recorded in Luke's Gospel? How was Simeon's prophecy over the Child fulfilled? That's why he is at the temple. I believe this was recorded in Luke's Gospel because a man of God is given the prophecy of what is to come. To let people know what is too happen. I think it is recorded by Luke because he was the one who was spoke details of personal blessings. Which revealed to us how God blessed Simeon and how patient he was and that now that Jesus was revealed to him the Lord could take him home. His prophecy states Jesus will come save the Gentiles and the Jew. Isaiah stated in his Prophecy all men. Jesus came for the Jews first but once rejected by the Jews God offered the Gentile salvation through Jesus. The piercing of the sword through Mary’s soul, was fulfilled by the rejection and crucifixion of Jesus. Unbelievable and Unbearable pain! Simeon, who was devout and righteous, had been promised that he would see the Messiah before he died. That particular day Mary and Joseph, with the Christ-Child came to the temple, to offer a sacrifice. Because Simeon was obedient to the prompting of the Holy Spirit, Simeon too came to the temple that day, so the promise he was given would be fulfilled. And he recognized it as such. Why do you think this incident is recorded in Luke's Gospel? To show that the parents chosen were not slap dash about following the Law as set out for them. Luke's Gospel was written by a Greek (not a Jew). Yet he was the one who recorded that they fulfilled the rituals as set out by the law. Jesus came first of all to the Jews (and then also to the Gentiles) How was Simeon's prophecy over the Child fulfilled? Simeon prophesied about the Child. (destined for the fall of many) Indeed the religeous leaders of the day, the ones who should have welcomed His coming, rejected Him. His coming meant disclosure of their money-making and their life-styles. These would indeed be shaken and changed. (destined for the rise of many) Yes, many who were hidden and not known about. Completely out of the picture. Would never have been remembered, so to say 'rose'. The disciples who followed Jesus got to be known and used greatly in His days on earth and also afterwards. Previously insignificant people, have since 'risen'. Their stories have been recorded and they have been a blessing and example to many. (a sign that is spoken against) Here he also refers to the 'stone' upon which some will stumble. Even though so many things showed Him to be the Messiah YET the people who should have welcomed Him did not. They stumbled about His very 'being there'. (a sword will pierce through your own soul) Here Simeon speaks about the agony that Mary will endure by witnessing the rejection of Christ and finally also His crucifixion. (the secret thoughts and purposes of many hearts will be disclosed) The religious leaders will not be able to hide what is in their hearts and will finally succumb to crucifying the very One Who came to save them. They together with the ones who were just 'crowd followers'. (Yeah, even what was in Judas' heart was revealed. Before and after the betrayal.) The Messiah was to be at the temple that day. Why do you think this incident is recorded in Luke’s Gospel? Luke writes chronologically of what happened to Jesus. Therefore, this particular incident was in line with the history that Luke wrote about. How was Simeon’s prophecy over the Child fulfilled? Simeon was sent to the temple at that very time to testify about the boy Jesus not being an ordinary child but special child who would bring salvation to the Jews and Gentiles. Particularly, he was to reaffirm to Mary and Joseph the messages delivered to them by the Angel prior to his conception. Why do you think this incident is recorded in Luke's Gospel? I believe that this incidence is recorded to provide further credence to the genuineness of Jesus as the Messiah and prophesized. How was Simeon's prophecy over the Child fulfilled? Jesus grew and became precisely what Simeon prophesized- causing the rising and falling of many in Israel, was spoken against by Jewish leaders and caused Mary’s heart to be pierced. God had promised Simeon that he would not die until he saw the Messiah. This incident is recorded in Luke because Luke had a deep concern and interest in history. He presents the life of Jesus not as just another event in God's special history, bust as the event in that history, Just as Simeon prophesied , because of the teaching of Jesus many stumbled and even fell not only among the Jews but among the Gentiles. They spoke against Him, falsely accused Him, and some even reject Him. The thought of their hearts were revealed with they joined in with others crying crucify an innocent man who knew no sin and release someone who was guilty of sin, And as Mary watched Her Son being crucified on the crossed it pierced her heart. I think because Luke writes for the gentiles and of all the gospels he appears to me the one who takes pains to include all other than just jews How was Simeon's prophecy over the Child fulfilled? Though Jesus was/is God's gift to His people, he was rejected. At the end of Christ’s ministry Mary felt the deep anguish as her son is rejected by the nation's leaders and ultimately crucified.
