Gideon was inspired by the Power 0f the Holy Spirit.

God increased his physical spiritual, or mental strength. God was preparing him for the war in order to His people from the hand of the enemy that where oppressing them for long..

The Holy Spirit is available to all believers today, but the Holy Spirit will come upon believers in an extraordinary way for special task. We should ask the Holy Spirit's help as we face our daily problems as well as life's major challenges.

God inspires Gideon to blow the shofar and summon troops to fight the Midianites. Gideon had much in common with the other judges that God selected, none were 'natural' leaders, none had strength of character, but all were able to turn and learn to depend entirely on God when they were called by Him into service. Until Gideon was called by God, he was willing to allow his fellow countrymen to engage in practices that he knew to be against God's wishes, he didn't consider that he had any right to prevent them, indeed he may even have joined others in blaming God for the predicament that Israel now found itself. But after God assured Gideon of His total support, Gideon transferred all his faith to God and leaned totally on Him without question.

What God ordains he also orchestrates and equips. God sent the Holy Spirit to be with Gideon. Jesus told the disciples it was very important that he go away so that he might give them (us) another Comforter... the Holy Spirit. He also said that when we have the Holy Spirit indwelling and empowering "greater works than these" we would accomplish. Oh, the futility and frustration for the "Church" and the world to try to go on their own power. Paul said that the Holy Spirit would bare witness with our spirit that we are the sons of God....So we too may be victorious and bold in the battle.

When God called leaders in the Old Testament it was common that He would put his Spirit in them. Or remove it in response to disobedience...King Saul.

Another interesting result of the Spirits presence in a leader is power to move people. The first to come to Gideons call were his neighbors who might have still been "steamed" about his wrecking their place of worship. Peter when filled with the Spirit at Pentecost preached and everyone heard in their own language, one language, many responses, Praise Be To God. Whether a preacher or a witness let us pray for the Holy Spirit to speak through us empowering our words to find lodging in the hearts of those who are in need. This would have further fueled Gideon's courage to fight the battles ahead.

Gideon's inspiration came from the Spirit of God. He is given the strength and confidence he needs to lead the clansmen against the midianites. By obeying and allowing the Spirit to work in his life, he leads the men to victory.

The Spirit of the Lord inspired Gideon and the rest of the judges and leaders in that era. He is still the inspiration today and without Him we are nothing. We cannot live the Christian life on our own.

"The Spirit of the Lord clothed Gideon with Himself and took possession of him....and he blew the trumpet." How encouraging for those of us who cower in fear when threatened....that "clothed with God's Spirit", we can become mighty warriors! God's power overrode the fear and timid spirit of Gideon and he rose up to be a military leader of the tribes against the adversary and his potential was maximized!

Moses had laid hands on Joshua and so he was full of the spirit of wisdom....the Israelites listened to him and did as the Lord commanded Moses.

The Spirit of the Lord came upon Othniel and he judged Israel. He went out to war and the the Lord delivered the king of Mesopotamia into his hand and his hand prevailed over Chushan-rishathaim.

Jephthah, in the Lord's power and strength became a military leader of the people and defeated the Ammonites.

Manoah, moved by the spirit of the Lord in Mahaneh-dan.

Samson, with the spirit of the Lord mightily upon him, tore the lion with his hands, and slew 30 men, taking their clothes as spoil.

Again, the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon Samson and he broke the ropes on his arms and the bonds melted off his hands.

The Spirit of God came mightily upon Saul.....

When the Spirit of God came mightily upon these men, they became powerful in might and strength and courage to defeat their enemies.

The mounting opposition that was to come against Iseral and the Power of the Holy Spirit that was upon Gideon.

Joshua, son of Nun; Othneil, son of Kenaz; Jephthah the Gileadite; Samson; and Saul are the judges of old. The things that are similar to each is the mounting opposition that each one stood against and the fact that the Holy Spirit came upon them when the the tiome came for battle.

Gideon summons an army to face the Midianites under the power filling of the Holy Spirit of God. And yet it is interesting to see that this action is before Gideon's apparent doubting of the whole situation by the asking of God for confirmation twice by the fleece. And so it appears to me that God has given his Spirit to Gideon for the battle cry and then stepped aside whilst Gideon mused on the situation which caused him to ask God for confirmation of a victory using him, a mere mortal, and least of his household. How true of us today. The common thing that judges and leaderes of that era had, was of course, the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the individual's willingness to be obedient to God.
