Q18. Servant Leadership

Recommended Posts

  • 1 month later...

The basic difference is this; the leadership of today caters to the people who donate the most money to their cause.  We see small examples of leaders that minister to us with humility, grace is hard to find.  It is a far cry from Christ pattern where the leader serves and ministers to those under their authority.  There is no gray area in the love of God. He offers and shows his grace, love, compassion and servitude to those under his authority.  The first show of Christs role as leader is love, second is grace, humility and wisdom.  The lord comes to you and is in us, we cannot lead if we are not filled with love, grace and humility.  We are called to minister to the saved and unsaved, the lost and the found.  Without the spirit of God in us (acceptance)we can do nothing but wait patiently and call on his spirit to reveal himself.  His spirit is full of grace and humility that pierces the heart and soul of his followers.  We must pursue him with humility, if we are truly with him and this is humbling in itself.

Q18. (Mark 10:42-44) What is the basic difference between the world’s pattern of leadership and Christ’s pattern? What does servant-leadership look like? Can you be a “great” Jesus-follower without serving humbly?

The basic difference between the world's pattern of leadership and Christ's pattern is greed, focus, and arrogance.  Leadership in the world is most often greedy for more power. Christ's pattern is focused on God and led by God.  Christian leaders ask God where He wants them to move, and they ask the Holy Spirit for help.  Servant-leadership looks like washing feet--whatever the need in whatever moment.  It often involves doing things we may not want to do. No, you cannot be a "great" Jesus-follower without serving humbly.  Micah 6:8 resonates at this topic, "He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God."

The world's pattern seeks to dominate others. Rule over others. Worldly people seek to use power and money to control people. Christ pattern is humble. Putting others before yourself. A servant leader must be willing to bless others and serve others. A person cannot be a great Jesus follower without being humble. It's impossible. Pride and arrogance can make its way in if a person does not be a humble leader. Instead of caring for the people they end up being mean to the people and can actually end up bringing people down and bringing a whole society down.

The world's pattern of leadership is to be served. Because it is the self that is leading. The self exalting itself is pride. It is acting like it is a god, or even the god. There is also deception, because overtly we are serving others however the heart is set on serving the self. The world operates like this, for example, politicians rally and praise themselves about serving others while covertly serving themselves. Jesus pointed this out several times of the hypocrisy of chief priests, Pharisees, scribes, and also in the parable of the publican and the Pharisee who were praying. The hypocrisy of Pharisees who would let all know that they were fasting and praying out loud in the streets for all to hear at the same time covertly engaging in wickedness.

Christ leadership is humbling onself to serve others, as Jesus was the proof of this. Philippians 2:6-8 [6]Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage, [7]rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.[8]And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!

In addition to this, His gospel was about humbling oneself and serving others. Paul urges us to do this, Philippians 2:3-5 [3]Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,[4]not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. [5]In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus. We place this in context of 1 Peter 4:10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.

Micah 6:8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

God is asking each one of us to be true leaders and true leadership is humbling onself and serving others. In fact we cannot serve others when we have pride, we cannot lead when we have pride. We can only serve others when we are humble, humbling ourselves in God. We may also refer to Matthew 22:36-40 in particular verse 39 “And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Love your neighbour as yourself is using the talents and resources God had entrusted in you to be in service to your neighbours. Your neighbour is each person you are connected to, it is anyone you come in interaction with despite how fleeting.

When one is putting the self first, using the talents and resources entrusted to them for their own selfish gains, that is not leading, that is serving the self and/or whatever it is one's focus is on. It is pride, it is definitely not serving God.

Q18. (Mark 10:42-44) What is the basic difference between the world's pattern of leadership and Christ's pattern? What does servant-leadership look like? Can you be a "great" Jesus-follower without serving humbly?

Mark 10:42-44 King James Version (KJV)

But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: and whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.

The main difference between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of the world is love.  In God's kingdom love motivates and humbly serves and with kindness, and generosity, caring for the smallest of needs, love covers all.  All service is done without attention being drawn to itself.  In the world system, it is just the opposite.  Every decision and motivation is to gain more power, more status, more dominion.  If people have to be trampled on, or used and abused and exchanged to elevate oneself they do and they will.  Everything is objectified and it is only as good as the purpose it serves to the person it serves.  There is strife and contention and alliances based on pretenses of what appearances are.  The one kingdom operates in the light and the other in the dark but appears light.  Everything is based on appearances not the substance.  In our world today, the political, the entertainment, even the church world are being shaken and we are seeing it is not  what it has appeared to be, often rotten to the very foundation.  It is being rocked and shaken.  However, God is building his kingdom also that will not be shaken, living in the hearts of men and women and built on love, and kindness, and service, where he sits on the throne of their hearts and they truly love and care and serve one another and their hope in in Him.

World pattern of leadership often focuses on self. Even the so called good governance has a self interest behind . Power, name and money seem to be the drive of many in the  high ranking positions.

Jesus example is just the total opposite of what is in the world . For that reason he talked  and lived  what the world considers  as foolishness or meaningless or even non profitable for any human being on earth .

Servant- leadership is heaven focused. Christians live on earth as a pilgrim on the way to heaven. So he uses his life to serve not to rule because he is a follower of his Saviour Jesus who was totally humbled where after He was raised to glory .

Jesus taught us that to be great we have to become small , considered as nothing in this world. He said unless we humbled ourselves we can’t be lifted up  in order to do be a great Jesus follower.

Q18. (Mark 10:42-44) What is the basic difference between the world's pattern of leadership and Christ's pattern? What does servant-leadership look like? Can you be a "great" Jesus-follower without serving humbly?

The Worlds pattern of Leadership is to excel above others, to control and rule others.  Christ's pattern is to serve others and to raise them up.  Servant leadership looks like focusing on others more than we focus on ourselves.

I don't think you can be a great Jesus-Follower without humbly serving others.  Humility focuses on others more than yourself.   Jesus was them most humble person to ever walk this earth to serve others to the point of his death.

The difference between the world's pattern of leadership and Christ's pattern is that the former is all about power and wanting to be recognized and served while Christ's is all about humility and serving others rather than the self. The world uses authority to dominate people while Christ uses humility to win over people to the Kingdom of God.

Servant leadership is about acknowledging that God has called us to serve others and not be selfish, full of pride and wanting to be reconized. It is about understanding that we are all made in the image of God and after His likeness and therefore no skin color, race, wealth or anything should be regarded as important when serving God's people.

Not at all, You cannot be a "great" follower of Christ if you put yourself first above other people and if you serve yourself rather serving others. We must emulate Christ in all that we do because He showed us what humility is by taking the servant apparels when washing His disciples' feet and also allowing children to come to Him.

Q.18 Mark 10:42-44  What is the difference between the world's pattern of leadership and Christ's pattern?

The key difference is that worldly leaders seek power and authority over others, while Christ's leadership models is characterized by humility and service, where the great are those who become humble servants too others. In today's society the world's pattern is about dominance, while Christ' is about serving others.

What does servant-leader ship look like?

Putting others first listening intently to others, showing empathy. Healing, broken spirits and people who have suffered from a variety of emotional hurts. Commitment to the growth of people and awareness of what's going on.

Can you be a great Jesus follower without serving humbly?

No! To be a disciple of Jesus is to be called to humility just like Jesus had demonstrated. Examples: Forgiving, Fear of the Lord, and honesty. Also, correcting other brothers and sisters in Christ with love. Jesus is the perfect example of humility we all should learn from Him.

Q18. (MARK 10:42-44)
What is the basic difference between the world's pattern of leadership and Christ's pattern? What does servant-leadership look like? Can you be a "great" Jesus-follower without serving humbly?
The world’s pattern of leadership is measured by personal achievements, whereas Christ’s pattern is measured by the success gained in serving others – how the needs of others are met. Servant leadership is not proud, is not egotistical, is not self-centred, is not self-promoting, and is not self-exalting. Our perfect example is our Lord Jesus Christ who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, the form of a slave. Humbling Himself to the point of death, even death on the cross. I should imagine it is possible to give the impression of being a disciple while still harbouring worldly attitudes in one’s heart, but in God’s kingdom true and lasting greatness is only measured by God’s standards. It’s all about what values are the most important to us – do our actions reflect the world’s values or God’s values?

The world's pattern for leadership is to rule over, control, in many cases to tyrannize the people.  Christ's pattern is to serve others.  To look out for their best interests and needs.  Christ actually invites us to serve so that we can be exalted at some point.   Servant leadership looks like a pastor pouring into the lives of others to lift them up and go further than he/she could.  Serving is lowing ourselves to aid someone else.

We can not serve without humility in the Kingdom.   Great followers put everyone else first.

Some of the words we use to describe our characteristics/goals mean something different entirely. Such is the case with the word "leader." We twist the meaning of the word "leader" to designate "follower" or even "slave." After inverting the use of the word, it means the opposite of it's common usage.

In practice, I erase the old word and insert it's opposite: leading is serving.

  • To die to self is to live.
  • To live is to love and serve others sacrificially.
  • To follow is to lead.
  • To lead is to serve.

The phrase "servant-leadership" is a logical non-sequitur akin to being up-down or black-white or hot-cold. It's nonsense. The meaning of leading is NOT serving but being served. The typical meaning of leadership, puts one is above others. The Christian use of the word inverts this meaning. Christ is really telling us, then, not to lead but to serve. We're told that in some mysterious way, serving is leading, but on the earth, this is NOT the case. On the earth ... in real, lived life ... serving puts one below those with the capacity to lead.

Jesus wants us to be the lowest members of society, to live as if our only option in life is to serve others. He's saying that any other self-appraisal is pride or sin, that those of us who have the ability and even opportunity to lead, must choose, instead, servitude.

We try to get around this by coming up with phrase-ideas like "servant-leader." But Jesus never asks us to be leaders. Just servants. He never asks us to be a hybrid of servant and leader, nor does He ask us to aspire to leadership so we can serve others. He only asks us to serve and to regard ourselves as slaves.

Some Christians believe that if they put in the long years of serving, they'll be rewarded with leading because they would have proven to God that they are willing to serve. But maybe, serving is the goal in itself and not some temporary state that prepares us for worldly leadership/wealth/power? Could service be the ultimate endpoint? If the greatest is the least ... and the least the greatest, then our greatness will be found solely in service, not in the leading that service may lead to.

I'm struck that Jesus never says that if the opportunity comes our way to be a leader, then we should seize it because greater good could be done for a greater number if we're powerful.

I'm also struck that Jesus never suggests we either become or respect those who aspire to political or social power. We obey Caesar, but we don't value the government. We aren't required to admire/extol/worship/love or feel anything deeper than a superficial obedience toward the state. Our obedience is, in this sense, shallow. It is this-worldly only. We obey so we can serve others and evangelize. Sure, we throw away our money in taxes that ultimately harms people ... but this gives us the ability to go and serve.

Is there any biblical justification for Christians to assume worldly power? I don't see it.

Are we giving into our own pride when we justify our will to power by describing ourselves as servant-leaders? I think so.
