It was payment for the food eaten by men and for their services with rescuing Lot. Giving a tenth of the war spoils to Melchizedek indicated that Abraham recognised Melchizedek as a servant of God. We tithe in our churches etc. But in Abraham's days, there were no churches and no prophets or Priests. Only Melchizedek was there serving the Most High God. So naturally, Abraham gave him his tenth of the spoils of war. It was done as an act of thanksgiving and worship. Tithing, whether in Abrahams days or in our days, reperesents the same values. Tithing should be done compulsorily. Its not an option for Christians. We have to learn to give cheerfully. Otherwise, if we prefer to give out of what remains at the end, we will end up in backlog as there won't be anything left after catering to our various needs. Once the accounts of God are settled, then our accounts will automatically tally. There won't be any deficit budget for us. Abraham is recognizing God as the author of His victory. Melchizedek, as priest representing God, accepts the tenth as God's. It should, but often giving is far below that level--thus many churches cannot pay their just bills, let alone spread the Gospel around the world. We can always find ways to spend our money, and thus say we have not enough to give a tithe to God. We pay our bills first, and then miserly give God a tenth of what remains. That is not tithing! It is my understanding that we tithe to our Pastor's, so they may feed their families, as they are set apart to feed the flock! If we don't give to them first, even if it's set aside in our minds as we pay the bills, because the money can quickly get gone and tithe goes unpaid if we don't look at it with Top-Priority! Now I am looking at it with top-priority, but it goes unpaid for truely I start each month in the hole and out side of just the norm bill's, there's not enough left to tithe, and then the cycle starts all over again. I'm working with it though, and am pleased to say that it's beginning to turn around. Something Good Is About To Happen! In Jesus Name! Amen! Tithing was significant , in that it showed he was putting God first before his own needs. Tithing today does represent the same kind of worship. It is an act of obedience and shows the order in which a person has put God in his life. The love of money is the root of all evil in most people's lives, and our giving is a thermometer to reveal how much we love God. BY ACCEPTING THESE GIFTS, MELCHIZEDEK WAS SHOWING ABRAHAM THAT HE WORSHIPPED THE SAME GOD AND GAVE GOD THE CREDIT FOR THE VICTORY. TITHING TODAY REPRESENTS THE SAME KIND OF WORSHIP. THANKING GOD FOR THE VICTORIES THAT WE HAVE. GIVING BACK TO GOD JUST ONE-TENTH IS A SURE WAY TO HAVE THE OTHER NINETY-PERCENT BLESSED. TITHING ON THE GROSS HAS A TWOFOLD BLESSING, ONE NOW AND THEN AT THE END OF THE YEAR WHEN THE TAXES COME DUE, GOD BLESSES THEM TOO. WHAT A GRACIOUS GOD WE SERVE!!!! He is expressing his feelings about God, and also his thanksgiving for all that God is to him, and has done for him. He is showing practically his longing for unity with God, and well as giving expression to his fear and awe of God. He gave us our purpose and the way to fullfill it in this world to live in with his loving companiohship HIMSELF to lead us and love us and strengthen and bless us. We have nothing we can sacrifice to HIM, he already owns all and lends it to us. He made the greatest sacrifice to endure our penalty for our sin natures draw to defile HIS cherished loved one. A tithe is acknowledging HIS Lordship over our life and our economic status. He provides for all our needs, and we can utilize what he has provided for our best interest when we honor him by seeking to know HIM and obeying his will for us, thru worship, offerings and being soft clay to be molded into HIS service, taking on HIS image imprinted on us when we accepted HIS call to be adopted into HIS eternal family. To give of your time, talents and wealth from the whole he gives you is the only way to honor HIM. Anything less is a demonstration of faithlessness that HE will not continure to provide for your needs, or a selfishness to seek more for yourself than HE has intended for you to be satisfied with. This is easier to live out as truth when single, but families often loose site of how to be honorable to God from the beginging of what it recieved, especially if families members have different spiritual maturity, and faith to be able to humble. Abraham gave a tithe to Melchizedek in order to honor God. Does tithing today represent the same kind of worship? Yes it does. We are to give the first fruits of what God has given us. Why should we tithe to God first (like Abraham did) before dividing up our paychecks to pay our bills? We should tithe first to God in order to honor Him, the One who has given to us to begin with.....for that we give Him back a portion. It is an act of putting God first above everything else. I think some tithe because they feel that they have to. If we tithe for the reason of love of God, we can truly worship Him through it. Why should we tithe to God first (like Abraham did) before dividing up our paychecks to pay our bills? Because we should worship God first and foremost, and we need to realize that we wouldn't have anything if God didn't allow us to have it. As has been said, "Give to Ceasar what is Ceasar's". Yes it is the same for us today we are not to pay our bills and go shoping then give the Lord his tenth of our income. His is to come out first for he is first in our lives and he will only except our first. He takes care of us and we should give to him out of love for him the first of all we get. Today's tithing is worship and showing God you trust Him. By giving, even if out of the little we have, we show God that He comes before money. We must trust Him in every area of our lives. I think here we're witnessing the first tithe unto God. For Melchizedek has already made known that he serves the God Most High...not only as a servant but as a priest. THerefore, Abraham must know that as he gave to Melchizedek, he gave as unto God. Indeed, it is a sign of worship. Our income today is as of Abraham's spoils of war..the fruits of our labour. And we are to give 1/10 to GOd to remind ourselves our dependency on Him and without Him, nothing is possible. To that, out tithe must be pure and complete :-) Unlike pagan worship, which demands sacrifices to enrich the idol n distress the worshipper...tithing to our God pleases Him and enriches the worshiper! He is giving God back what belongs to Him. Abraham did not forget God when the victory was won. ( Tithing today represents the same kind of worship, yes, because its an act of worship of God Most High. To recognize God and to give Him all the praise and Glory. It helps us not to forget God and all He has done and is about to do for us. © We should tithe to God first before dividing our paycheck to pay our bills because all that we have belongs to God, therefore giving a tenth part is God's anyway.
