God is not against pleasures at all...God would not want his children suffering or living in misery..But the question is about the priority...When you place seeking after pleasures before seeking His ways and kingdom that accounts for a sin..It is said in the Bible that one cannot serve God and money together... I bellieve God truly want us to have pleasure in our life, as long as it doesn't go against His will in for us. If we allow it to become selfish pleasure where we are always thinking of ourselves. When we put our pleasures befor God that is displeasing to Him. To live to increase our pleasures is living a very selfish life and could easily take us down the wrong path, that eventually we would live to regret. God is not against pleasure as long as it is good pleasure. Pleasure can be self seeking living for "pleasurable things which come from the world." These things do not satisfy so we long for more, but when we seek Christ first, He fills us with joy and all the pleasure that we need, we then are content. Unfortunately the pleasures of the world always look so inviting, like candy to a child, but the bible tells us that being friends with the world is showing hatred to God. But when seeking pleasure becomes our main goal in life then we are not living for God. Self pleasure can become very destructive. What wrong in living to increase one's pleasure? When we live only for self pleasure we become selfish. When our prayers are centered on our pleasure alone, our focus in no longer on Him but on things of this world. a)God is not against good pleasure, only self-seeking, selfish pleasures that in the end hurt ourselves,others and God. b)Living to increase one's own pleasure, is selfish, and we are denying other people our love and other good things that God wants us to have and for us to share with others. God is not against pleasure but when we want a pleasure that is not to our benefit & his Glory, God will sometimes not grant it. On the other hand, he will sometimes grant us pleasures that are wrong for us , in order for us to see our mistake & the "error of our ways" Living to increase our own pleasure is selfish & wrong because it is not living to "glorify God", nor is it living to "seek ye first the kingdom of heaven". The key word here is Living for pleasure.\ We are to live for Jesus and the Kingdom of God. God will supply all our needs in abundance and wants us to experiece his joy and peace. Read Luke 19:9-11 and it tells us that God will answer our prayers of petition as long as we are asking for the right thing and with the right motives. He knows how to give good gifts to us, but we must seek these good gifts and not things for our own pleasures. Taken to the extreme, it leads me to neglect others needs and God’s will. If I put myself first, I will always be in conflict with others and unwilling to fully surrender to God. When we look at what He has done that will always bring us pleasure. It isn’t wrong to increase one’s pleasure as long as it doesn’t get it from someone else pleasure. When our efforts are focused on meeting our own needs and desires instead of meeting the needs of others. But he is against our putting pleasure and personal enjoyment ahead of our love and appreciation for Him. God is against people living their lives totally in pursuit of personal happiness instead of loving others and trying to improve their lives as well through a relationship with Him. What wrong in living to increase one's pleasure? Living with the main goal of increasing one's pleasure is breaking the first commandment. "You shall have no other gods before Me". Living to increase our pleasure and enjoyment of life as our main focus places that goal ahead of serving God. I know God is not against pleasure, especially if it involves time with the family and fellow Christian brothers and sisters. God is not against pleasure as long it is not for self indulgence or greed to take from others or envy to despise other people. Living to increase our own pleasure is wrong, we become self centered, greed and enviousness. This is sin against our brothers and sisters and most of all God. Tyreek Posted April 23, 2017 Report Share Posted April 23, 2017 In chapter 4, I believe as James nears his closing, he is giving his previous words from chapter 1, a distinct perspective and explaining further the consequences of his warnings. “They should not then expect anything from God for they who ask are double-minded and unstable.” (James 1:5) Then, in verse 14 he warns, “but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed.” The reason we do not receive what we ask from God is we do not ask for a good purpose, but for an evil one. One of selfishness and not giving God glory. God is not against pleasure, He is against the type of bad pleasure we ask for. If we do not compromise God’s glory or forget who blessed us with what we do have, I do not believe seeking pleasure is wrong. For the Israelites sought a land flowing of milk and honey.
