haar
Q22. (James 4:4) Why does James refer to church members as "adulteresses"? What does the adultery consist of? Who is the aggrieved husband? What is wrong with friendship with the world? James referred to some Church members as adulteresses because they attached themselves so tight to the things and pleasures of this world at the expense of loving relating well with God. The Lord God/ the Lord Jesus Christ is the aggrieved husband. Friendship with the world is enmity with God.
blezed
(James 4:4) Why does James refer to church members as “adulteresses”? Because he is referring to believers as married to God. What does the adultery consist of? When we are married and have a relationship or flirt with another man/woman or put the world before God. Who is the aggrieved husband? What is wrong with friendship with the world? An aggrieved husband is Christ. Friendship with the world you become an enemy of God.
Irmela
Q22. (James 4:4) Why does James refer to church members as "adulteresses"? What does the adultery consist of? Who is the aggrieved husband? What is wrong with friendship with the world? The 'Church' is the bride who is betrothed to Christ. When the members of the church then flirt with the world, or turn their back on Christ and live in the world itself, then they commit adultery and are adulteresses. The Amplified Version puts it as "unfaithful wives having illicit love affairs with the world". The aggrieved husband being Christ. Friendship with the world is enmity with God. It is being God's enemy.

Janzie
On 12/17/2004 at 3:02 PM, Pastor Ralph said: Q22. (James 4:4) Why does James refer to church members as “adulteresses”? What does the adultery consist of? Who is the aggrieved husband? What is wrong with friendship with the world? James refers to church members as adulteresses in the feminine form deliberately, however, because he is referring to believers as married to God. The church is the bride of Christ. Adultery consists of flirting with the world. When we are married to one husband, but flirt with another lover, we are adulterous. Christ is the aggrieved husband. When we are friends with the world, our allegiance is not toward God but to the world Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God." Old Jerry
James refers to the church members as “adulteresses” because we are going to be the bride of God. We are adulteresses because we are becoming part of this world. The world does not love God and is always trying to work against Him. They would get rid of him if they could.
