Craig
Q3. (5:14-16) In the healing prayer, what is the role of oil? What is the role of the prayer of faith? What is the role of faith? What is the role of confession of sins? Oil represents the healing power of God and serves as a stimulus to faith. The role of the prayer of faith is to ask God for healing and/or forgiveness of sin. Prayer is pointless without faith. The Bible teaches that God doesn't answer the prayer of those who don't believe He can or will. So, faith is critical to prayer. Sins block prayer. Sin must be confessed regularly to maintain a relationship to God.

lighthouse2014
Q3. (5:14-16) In the healing prayer, what is the role of oil? What is the role of the prayer of faith? What is the role of faith? What is the role of confession of sins? In the healing prayer anointing oil represents the presence of the Holy Spirit and his healing power. The prayer of faith is the fact that the sick person has faith God will heal him. The elder praying also has faith God will heal the person being prayed for. The role of faith is that a person believes God will heal them and without faith there can be no healing. The role of confession is that a person is sorrowful for his sins against God and man. Confessing his sin to a trusted believer will pierce the sin he is harboring and along with a prayer of faith he is forgiven.
Jen
Q3. (5:14-16) In the healing prayer, what is the role of oil? What is the role of the prayer of faith? What is the role of faith? What is the role of confession of sins? Oil is symbolic of the Holy Spirit God can honor a prayer that has true faith in Him. Faith is sort of the backbone of our Christian life. Without it we have nothing firm or solid to stand on. I truly believe that there is a strong link between sin and our health. I am not saying that all sickness is sin related however like the proverb says A joyful heart is good medicine. They all correlate. Our mind can affect our health and our health can affect our mind. That is why confession and faith are so important to our lives and health. God Bless Jen Numbers 6:24-
Tyreek
I believe the role of the oil in the healing prayer is a representation of the Holy Spirit. Jesus did not have to use oil, since He is the Spirit. The oil represents the Holy Spirit coming upon you, the empowering of the Holy Spirit. The prayer of faith has the role of saving or making the sick person well. For this to happen, faith must be found in the prayer to be effective. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective" (5:16). Confessing our sins to other Christians is making yourselves accountable to your sin. James says, "Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.
Jim Q
Oil is a symbol of anointing - not totally necessary but in the scriptures so we should probably do it. Prayer is the request for healing. Prayer is the way we petition, as opposed to sacrifices or spiritual exercises, or forms of denial. God is merciful in this regard. We have to have faith, we can't be testy or put God on the block. You have to all in for this one. Confession is most often overlooked, but confession is key. Our sins get in the way of spiritual life, so confession, and change, is central
Krissi
1. Oil is symbolic. 2. Without faith, prayer is talking to yourself. So, in a very real sense, a prayer of faith is the only true prayer there can be. Having said that, it seems that faith isn't something you have or don't have, like wearing a hat and taking it off, but something that grows within you from something small, like a mustard seed, to something larger. The implication here is that only prayers offered to Him with "big" faith will be heard. I just don't believe this. I believe God hears the pleas from those whose faith is faltering, too. 3. Personally, the notion of confessing sins to another human makes me squeamish as I simply don't trust anyone, even other Christians, with personal information. In the Catholic church, anonymity is assured with the confessional box. The priest sits on one side with a screen separating the sinner from the priest who mediates between God and the sinner. The priestly-mediation aspect of Catholic confession is, in my opinion, wrong, as Christ is the only mediator we need. But the practice of confession in Catholic churches leads me to think that the idea of confessing sins to each other is also wrong as our confessions are to God and our forgiveness assured by Christ's death on the cross. In no place is it necessary for another human to intervene. Thus, though it may be psychologically healthy to confess to another Christian, it's not spiritually necessary: we confess to Him alone. Neither is anointing with oil necessary. The only thing that matters, in the context of healing, is faith, and as is mentioned in Ephesians, faith, in itself, is a gift of God. So much of Christian faith is recursive.
hanks
Q31. (5:14-16) In the healing prayer, what is the role of oil? What is the role of the prayer of faith? What is the role of faith? What is the role of confession of sins? In these verses, the emphasis is on prayer, not on oil. This is evident from the next verse, where James affirms the power of prayer: “and the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well” (James 5:15a). We find that oil often has a symbolic meaning in scripture. When used with the phrase ‘in the name of the Lord’, it symbolizes the healing power of the Lord Jesus. We also note that Jesus Himself did not use oil to heal. In acts, the apostles healed the sick on numerous occasions and also did not resort to the use of oil. However, the prayer of faith offered by the elders of our church, on behalf of the sick, depends fully on the Lord, who may grant healing and restoration. Their prayers are offered in faith because of the promise that our Lord can heal the sick. We know that God uses different means in healing. Sometimes He heals through natural bodily processes, for He has placed within our bodies tremendous powers of recuperation. He heals through physicians and surgeons and through medicines. But we also know that He may heal spiritually through the recovery from underlying fears, resentments, bitterness, and guilts, all of which may produce illness. Finally, our illnesses may be due to sin. We are told to confess our sins. The statement “if he has sinned, he will be forgiven” emphasizes the interrelatedness of body and soul. For instance, Jesus healed the paralytic spiritually when He said, ‘your sins are forgiven’ (mark 2:5) and physically by saying, “get up, take your mat and go home” (mark 2:11). Jesus heals soul and body to make man complete.
Perry Ford
Q31. (James 5:14-16) In the healing prayer, what is the role of oil? What is the role of the prayer of faith? What is the role of faith? What is the role of confession of sins? The anointing with oil was a symbol of the presence of God's powerful Holy Spirit. The "prayer of faith" is to "save" the sick person, or "make the sick person well" The confession of one's sins, the person is making himself accountable for his sin. He is piercing the darkness of this secret that has locked him in this sin for a long time. Once this is done, he can finally let go of this sin to God. The Christian friend can assure the person making a confession of Almighty God's forgiveness based on 1 John 1:9.
Katy
Q3.The use of oil in the healing prayer can be a stimulus to faith. It is a sacred act of faith which is accompanied with bold powerful prayer. It is a symbol of the presence of God’s Holy Spirit. However prayers for healing can be said without oil as it is the faith of the person praying which can bring healing and the sick person must also believe God is willing to heal. If the person doesn’t believe that God is able and willing to heal them healing will not happen. Confession is vital to be healed , our hearts must be pure and clean before God. We must not be harbouring sin in our hearts. Healing is more likely to take place once a confession is made to a trusted person and to God. Irmela
Q31. (James 5:14-16) In the healing prayer, what is the role of oil? What is the role of the prayer of faith? What is the role of faith? What is the role of confession of sins? Both the exercise of prayer and the physical anointing of oil are acts of obedience through which faith is expressed and for which God, according to His Divine intervention grants healing. The using of the oil was thus a sacred act of faith. In Mark 6:13 we read that the disciples that were sent out into the towns and villages actually anointed the sick people with oil and healed them. The anointing with oil was a symbol of the presence of God's Holy Spirit. Often afflictions of ill health can bring about bitterness or despair and often prayer is out of the question whereas to call in someone is acceptable to the sick person. (This, the despair and bitterness is not necessarily always there). When others are called in and then anoint the afflicted one (symbolizing the presence of the Holy Spirit) this already can lift the burden of despair like a burden shared is a burden halved. Praying and anointing in the Name of the Lord ensures that we give God the glory for the healing. It is not by man's power or prayer. God is the source of the healing. Genuine confession before God and openness to others about a sin that has bound one for a time is a sign of letting go and maybe it is not something that has bound one for a long time, but maybe just the bitterness and despair since the illness, definitely also makes one feel better once it is in the open. It actually makes one accountable. Sin is an offense to God so a cleansed heart and renewed spirit are essential for the fervent prayer of a righteous man to be honoured by God. [ David's prayer in Psalm 51 is to create in him a pure heart and a upright/steadfast spirit.]

Carolina
The role of oil in healings to have a physical element to the point or place of the healing. The oil itself will not heal but is just a physical representation of the anointing. Healing can take place without the oil, but it has a place in the role. The role that the prayer of faith has is extremely important, this is what initiates the healing. No healing will take place without faith (at the same time GOD can heal whenever he wants) it is usually the catalyst for the healing to start to be initiated. Confessions of sins is like having clean bandages to wrap the wound. You want the vessel clean you want the dressing of healing to be clean, so sins have to be confessed. Old Jerry
In the healing prayer the role of the oil is a symbolic act. The role of the prayer of faith is to have that faith that the prayer is going to be answered. The role of the faith is to comfort the person that is being prayed over. The role of the confession of sins is that it relieves you of carrying that sin around.
