Marloes
Q1. (22:40-41, 45-46) Why did he ask his disciples to pray? What temptation did Jesus know they would be facing? What was the content of their prayer to be? Did they actually pray this prayer diligently? How does the Lord's Prayer word this kind of prayer? Why do you think Jesus wanted to be alone during his own prayer? We all get tempted by the devil. Only with Gods help, we can stand against it. That's why we have to pray. Jesus knew that the disciples would be tortured for their testimony. People rather avoid pain so many people would give up. The disciples kept on testifying even though they we're tortured. They wouldn't have done that if they knew it weren't true. The Lord's prayer tells us to ask God to deliver us from the evil one. Like Peter said later, devil walks around like a lion - we can't stand against him alone. Jesus wanted to be alone to talk in all rest with the Father. You can't pray if other people distract you. patience123
Jesus asked his disciples to pray because he knew that he would soon be taken from them, that they would be afraid, tempted to forsake Jesus and his teaching. It would be far easier to run away, go back to the life they had before they met Jesus. The content of their prayer would be-- to ask for strength for their Lord Jesus, and for themselves in the coming time of trial. For God's presence to be with them so that they could support Jesus in every way possible. They didn't pray diligently, they were exhausted and terribly sad. The Lord's Prayer contains the words---" Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil " Jesus wanted to be alone during his own prayer because he wanted to be, as one, with his Father in heaven--to cry to him from his heart, an intensly personal prayer full of anguish. He needed God's strength more than ever before.
trinity
He asked his disciples to pray so they would mirror Him. He wanted them to be prepared for things to come. I don't think they knew what Jesus was going to be faced with (if they knew they would of never been asleep) The content of their prayer must have been to resist tempatation and for God to have His own way. They beleived that Jesus was the Son of God and would deliver Him. The Lord's prayer is to resist temptation, Jesus knew what was to come and what the disciples were going to face (eg.Peter denying Christ)that's why He wanted to be alone to pray not only for Himself but also for His disciples to carry on. Jesus did not want any distraction when He's with His Father (God). I feel the best time to pray is alone and especially early in the morning when I could hear the voice of God speaking throught the Holy Spirit. I think Jesus wants us to mirror Him and do the same everyday of our lives, to watch and pray since we do not know what tomorrow may bring. However while we pray God would reveal to us things to come.

PATCH
The spiritual atmosphere was dark, intensed and highly emotional. Both Jesus and his disciples were overwhelmed with sorrow. Jesus asked his disciples to pray so that they would not fall into temptation. Jesus knew that his disciples would give in to their fear and confusion and the actions they take would be based on their own understanding. It would be as if they would forget his teachings and that the miracles they witnessed had never happened. The disciples were to pray that the Father's will be done, that they will trust him no matter what happens and that they will not be tempted to do things according to what they see and feel. Unfortunately, the disciples gave in to their anguish and despair and were not able to pray diligently. The Lord's prayer is worded Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done ..... Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. A spiritual warfare was taking place. Jesus needed to connect with God (not that he was ever disconnected and prayer was the only way. He wanted to do God's will but the anguish and sorrow was too overwhelming. He had to be alone to draw strength from God.

Did they actually pray this prayer diligently? According to verse 45 they had prayed with sadness. How does the Lord's Prayer word this kind of prayer? Lead us not into temptation. Why do you think Jesus wanted to be alone during his own prayer? He could fully express Himself to God the Father. He could be not occupied by the disciples tiredness. Trusting God
Q1. (22:40-41, 45-46) Why did he ask his disciples to pray? Jesus asked His disciples to pray that they do not “enter into” the temptations they will face. What temptation did Jesus know they would be facing? As Jesus disciples Jesus knew that they would be facing the temptations of human life. If I was to draw some conclusions about specific temptations I would like at the Gospels when Satan tempted Jesus. *One of the temptations Satan could tempt them with was “hunger.” Luke 4:3-4 – Jesus was tempted physically with bread to eat by Satan because He had been fasting and had nothing to eat for 40 days. Another temptation could be power and wealth. Luke 4:5-8 – Jesus was tempted with worldly authority and glory. The last temptation Satan tempted Jesus with was instant acclaim. Luke 4:9-13 – Jesus was tempted with fame. These are a few of the temptations Jesus knew they would be facing, because He was tempted by Satan with these same temptations. * Taken from #5 Jesus' Temptation (Luke 4:1-13) by Dr. Ralph F. Wilson A few more could be the **** of the eyes, **** of the flesh, and pride of life as stated in I John 2:15-17. I John 2:15-17 – “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the **** of the flesh, and the **** of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the **** thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.” (KJV) What was the content of their prayer to be? The contents of their prayer should be that they do not “enter” into temptation. Did they actually pray this prayer diligently? In the Bible, we read that the disciples ran, denied, or betrayed Jesus when He was crucified. We also see that they became strong men in the faith, except for Judas who hung himself after he betrayed Jesus. Did they actually pray this prayer diligently, maybe not at first, but as they learned and felt how it was to turn their backs on Jesus whom they loved dearly I believed that they prayed this prayer as they grew in the Lord. How does the Lord's Prayer word this kind of prayer? * According to the Lord’s Prayer in Luke 11:2-4, and Matthew 6:9-13, "deliver us from evil" or "deliver us from the evil one." Jesus is teaching us to be dependent upon God to help us in times of temptation, when the tempter seems especially strong. Don't lead us into places where we can be tempted, we pray, but lead us in places where you are, and where we can be free. * Taken from: #48. The Lord's Prayer (11:1-4) by Dr. Ralph F. Wilson Why do you think Jesus wanted to be alone during his own prayer? Jesus knew the value of spending time with the Father in prayer. He often spent time alone with the Father seeking His will, asking for strength, whatever Jesus needed He knew that His Father could provide it if it was according to His Will. That is why Jesus often prayed for the Father’s will to be done when He went to Him with a request.
mycin
Jesus tells his disciples to pray because he knew that they were so exhausted from sorrow that they needed strength to continue. They were tempted to flee and Jesus knew that he needed their support at this most trying time. The content of their prayer was simple, "Father, keep us from giving in to temptation." The disciples were not very diligent, though, as they fell asleep while waiting for Jesus to return. In a similar way, the Lord's Prayer says, "Lead us not into temptation." I think Jesus needed to be alone in order for the disciples to learn how to pray without him. They had spent so much time learning from him and now he was about to be taken from to be killed and, just over 40 days later, then to return to his Father. Onerivertrail
Jesus knew things were about to change for all of them. He knew the sufferings and temptations of the flesh and told them to pray so they would have strength from the Father to resist all that they were about to face. He said to pray that they would not fall into temptation! I don’t think they prayed diligently. If they had done so they wouldn’t have slept at all. In the Lord’s Prayer we are to ask the Father to lead us not into temptation but to deliver us from evil. I think Jesus needed to be completely alone with the Father in prayer and without the many different distractions each disciple would give Him during His final moments before being taken as a prisoner. He needed solitude to persevere in prayer.
JoanG
Jesus wanted his disciples to build a great faith base within themselves. He wanted them to know that true diligent prayers would soon be answered by him and his Father in heaven. Jesus knew that there would be a great temptation to turn from his teachings back to the ways of the world once he was gone. He told them to pray that they would not give into temptation. He wanted them to pray for help. I am not sure how well they did pray for this. After his death, they took to hiding right away. They were afraid to be out among the people. The Lord's prayer was given to the apostles in the Sermon on the Mount. Even though the meaning is the same, there are different words used in different versions of the bible. KJV says: and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. NRSV: and do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one. New English Bible: And do not bring us to the test, but save us from the evil one. Jerusalem Bible: and do not put us to the test, but save us from the evil one. Everyday Bible: and do not cause us to be tempted, but save us from the evil one. I feel that Jesus wanted to be alone to talk to his Father above, and on a very personal basis. He did not want to share this very special time with anyone else. It was going to be the very last time that he was going to be able to have privacy before his death and resurrection. Old Jerry
Jesus asked his disciples to pray so that they would not fall into temptation. The temptation that Jesus knew that they were going to fall into was one that would deny him and that they would abandon him. They did not actually pray this prayer diligently because they fell asleep. The Lord’s Prayer asks that we not be led into temptation. I think that Jesus wanted to be alone during his own prayer because he is the one that went on farther.
Konki
Jesus and the deciples are under tremendous stress. Jesus tells them to pray that they won't fall into temptation. Pray that they won't be tested. Through all this they would stand strong. Jesus has told them that he's going to be betrayed by one of them and Peter is going to deny him. They would be facing the temptation and tested to deny Jesus. Jesus tell them to pray so that they can overcome the temptation and pass through the testing successfully and stand strong for Jesus. The deciples did not pray diligently. They were found sleeping while they should have been praying lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Jesus knelt down in submission to the Heavenly Father. Jesus was about to face the worst moments of His life, pain, suffering, denial, unfair trial and death. He submits to the father through prayer for which he wanted to be alone, praying for strength as He is going to offer Himself as sacrifice for the sins of the world. Stanley Tavaziva
Jesus asked the disciples to pray that they would not fall into temptation because he knew that he would soon be leaving them. Jesus also knew that they would need extra strength to face the temptations ahead—temptations to run away or to deny their relationship with him. They were about to see Jesus die. Would they still think he was the Messiah? The disciples’ strongest temptation would undoubtedly be to think they had been deceived. Was Jesus trying to get out of his mission? It is never wrong to express our true feelings to God. Jesus exposed his dread of the coming trials, but he also reaffirmed his commitment to do what God wanted. The cup he spoke of meant the terrible agony he knew he would endure—not only the horror of the crucifixion but, even worse, the total separation from God that he would have to experience in order to die for our sins. Luke tells us that Jesus’ sweat resembled drops of blood. Jesus was in extreme agony, but he did not give up or give in. He went ahead with the mission for which he had come. How tragic it is that many of us Christians act as if we are sound asleep when it comes to devotion to Christ and service for him. . Lisa Wolf
Jesus asked His disciples to pray so they would not fall into temptation. He knew they would be facing the temptation to deny Him and fall away. They did not pray diligently, instead they fell asleep. The Lord's Prayer states, "Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil." Good question, "Why do you think Jesus wanted to be alone during his own prayer?" Ultimately, He knew He had to face this monstrous task of death on a cross alone, His anguish was overwhelming, and I think He wanted to spend time with His Father. I am grateful to know God sent an angel to strengthen Him. I pray that for my friends fighting for their lives in Ukraine.
