Q5. Gideon's Positive Infulence

Recommended Posts

Gideon widely influenced Israel through his own life-time, in many good ways such as in defeating the Midianites and bringing peace to Israel during his life; and in some bad ways he made the choices of revenge against his enemies, and making an ephod out of the spoils of warfare that only the high priest was to have and causing his household and all of Israel to worship it as an idol instead of worshiping the One true God Jehovah. The positive continuing effect of his leadership as a judge over Israel is that his life and his high as well as low points in his life were recorded in the Word of God for our benefit so we can learn what it means to be a godly leader as well as godly followers; and the things we have to be aware of them so we don

While Gideon was around the Israelites had peace in the land both with God and with their neighbors.

His victory as well as mistakes have provided us with reminders that the Battle is the Lords as well as any praise that is forthcoming. We are reminded as well of the truth that, "little is much when God is in it!"

Praise Be to God!

Q5. (Judges 8:28-31) How does Gideon influence Israel during his life?

After the defeat, the Midianites stayed away and didn't surface again to harass the Israelites. The land had peace and rest for 40 years in the days of Gideon.

What is the positive continuing effect of his leadership as judge?

Gideon had torn down and destroyed the Baals and Asherah poles before the battle. The people stayed away from Baal worship until after Gideon died, then they turned back to the Baals and made Baal-berith their god.

Q5. (Judges 8:28-31)

How does Gideon influence Israel during his life?

In his victory over, and relentless pursuit of the Midianites he showed his obedience to God. But his making the ephod was a mistake which ensnared him, his family, and the whole nation. He declined kingship yet he lived a lavish lifestyle of a king. His many wives and seventy sons all give the impression of living a life of luxury. Ironically, his son

Gideon's obedience to God's calling and the subsequent action of deliverance from the Midianites and the nation's wholehearted return to worshipping God was Gideon's influence for good upon the Israelite nation. The continuing effect of his influence was the forty years of peace that ensued unil his death. Thereafter, sadly it became a different story with further backsliding by the nation.....

Midian did not attack Israel again, and the.  land had rest for forty years during the days that Gideon was judge.   It is a shame that he had a concubine in Shechem.  He had a son by the name of Abimelech which caused a host of problems for Israel after Gideon died.  The ephod became a snare unto Gideon;  like Solomon, Gideon was distracted from whole hearted service of Yahweh.   It was in Shechem that an idol temple was built for an idol diety.

Gideon did demonstrate that God is a rewarded of those who seek Him diligently. Though his faith dimmed, he did not forsake God entirely.  Gideon is a wonderfull example that we must watch against the beginnings of sinfull dispositions in our hearts which are stimulated into growth by objects of carnal desire. or by wrongs or insults or tauntings.  We must crucify the flesh with its affections and lusts.   We are to humble ourselves before the Cross of Christ and be changed by the Risen Christ til these earthly glories disappear.   We must demonstrate God's law; therefore transcending the happiness of our own desires.

Another point, we must be very carefull about heeding to damnsble heresies and false religion.  Mature Christain writers like St John of the Cross.wrote in great detail about spurious signs and wonders.   We must have victory over ourselves; we will not touch the Ark.   More than ever, we look unto Christ Jesus.  We are to be diligent Bible students

The ordinary Israelite would have felt much more secure because of Gideon -- no longer would he have to thresh in winepresses! Security, then, was Gideon's primary gift to Israel. He was, after all, a military leader which the angel called a "mighty warrior," not a religious or political leader. In his realm, that of military engagement and securing the borders of Israel, Gideon was quite successful.

I still believe that what many on this site regard as harsh revenge was God's will. Note that Israel's state was one of peace for many years. Had Gideon let those men survive, the peace of Israel could have been threatened. We will never know.

The impact of ephod-worship was felt less by the Israelites who lived during Gideon's lifetime than those who lived after his death. Religious apostacy takes time to filter through the population and settle in the minds of the people. Today, the actions of our corrupt and incompetent political class are similarly destroying the culture and morality of the people, albeit slowly. Moral devolution is generational: yesterday's ephod-like corruption is making it's cultural impact today, just as today's corruption will poison the minds and souls of our children and grandchildren.

Q5.  (Judges 8:28-31)

How does Gideon influence Israel during his life?

What is the positive continuing effect of his leadership as judge?

The Midianites were subdued and Israel had tranquility for 40 yrs.

Unfortunately Gideon had many wives, contradictory to God's direction.  A concubine, also bore him a son.  The influence of this wrong, was only reflected after Gideon's death.
