Q3. Priests Eating OT Sacrifices

Recommended Posts

Q3. In what way did the priests participate in the altar by eating of the Old Testament sacrifices? How does Paul connect this observation with our participation with Christ's sacrifice?

The priests were not only to burn the offering animal on the altar but they were to eat a portion of

the animal which God said was their's as payment and a livelihood it is how they were to be fed

and the sacrifice was not done till this portion was eaten at least some eaten by the priest.

the participation of the priest eating a portion was just as important as the slaughtering and offering

in burning the offering. and in cretain offerings the family of the offerer were to eat as well as the priests.

In the participation of the Corinthians and us now days is thru eating and drinking the elements of

bread and wine in the meal of celebration of the remembering of Christ's giving himself as our sacrifice

we cannot participate unless we take and eat and drink the elements. being obedient to his Jesus's

commands of how to remember this his death for us.

Q3. In what way did the priests participate in the altar by eating of the Old Testament sacrifices? How does Paul connect this observation with our participation with Christ's sacrifice?

Just as the priests in the Old Testament partook of the sin offering for atonement, we now partake of the atonement of our sins that was the sacrifice that Jesus made on the Cross. This we do when we eat the bread and drink the wine/juice, just as the priests ate a portion of the sin sacrifice.

Q3. In what way did the priests participate in the altar by eating of the Old Testament sacrifices?

It was the practice of the priesthood to eat a portion of the sacrifices brought to the tabernacle or temple. A portion was eaten by the priests and a portion was burned on the altar. The priest's eating of a portion of the sacrifice, was part of the atonement process.

How does Paul connect this observation with our participation with Christ's sacrifice?

Paul says that as we eat of the Lord's Supper, we become sharers in the offering of Christ on the cross for our sins.

The priests would eat a portion of the sacrifice offered to God on the altar. That was part of the atonement process. Just as the priests were sharers in the sacrifice made on the altar of burnt offering, we by eating of the Lord's Supper, become sharers in the offering of Jesus on the cross for our sins.

The priests participating in that the eating of a portion by the priests was part of the atonement process. Paul is telling us that, in the same way, when we participate in the Lord's Supper, we share in the offering of Christ on the cross for our sins.

Q3. In what way did the priests participate in the altar by eating of the Old Testament sacrifices? How does Paul connect this observation with our participation with Christ's sacrifice?

an alter can be thought of as... a way to become different / a sacred tool to bring about a difference. The priests participated in the alter by playing their part.

thankfully, our present understanding of what God requires from us has moved on from killing animals.

Q3. In what way did the priests participate in the altar by eating of the Old Testament sacrifices? How does Paul connect this observation with our participation with Christ's sacrifice?

When the priest eat the sin offering, they were taking away the guilt of the community by making atonement for them before the Lord. Paul is making the connection by us partaking of the Lord Supper when we eat the bread, which stands for his body, and the cup, which stands for his blood, we are sharers in Christ sacrifice for us.

Q3. In what way did the priests participate in the altar by eating of the Old Testament sacrifices? How does Paul connect this observation with our participation with Christ's sacrifice?

In what way did the priests participate in the altar by eating of the Old Testament sacrifices? God had commanded through Moses that the priests were to participate in the atonement by eating as a community a portion of the offering. By this practice, they would be burn part of the offering and then join in by eating a portion in order to be sharers of the sacrifice.

How does Paul connect this observation with our participation with Christ's sacrifice? We are to be sharers in the sacrifice of Jesus. This is demonstrated as part of participating in the Lord's supper. In other words as Pastor Ralph wrote, we will "become sharers in the offering of Christ on the cross for our sins."

Q3.

In what way did the priests participate in the altar by eating of the Old Testament sacrifices?

In the OT by eating the offering, the people identified themselves with God, with the nation of Israel, and with all that the altar represented.

How does Paul connect this observation with our participation with Christ's sacrifice?

I think Paul is saying that eating at the Lord's Table signifies fellowship with Him. The same was true of those Israelites who ate of the sacrifices. It meant that they had fellowship with the altar. Whereas when we take part in the Lord's Supper we are having fellowship with the Lord.

In what way did the priests participate in the altar by eating of the Old Testament sacrifices?

The eating of the sacrifices also gave the community they served atonement for sin...they were following through with what the law required on them.

How does Paul connect this observation with our participation with Christ's sacrifice?

We also have been commanded to drink the blood in remembrance...to eat the body in remembrance. We share a part of the ongping process to remember each time we take of the Lord's Supper.

Q3. In what way did the priests participate in the altar by eating of the Old Testament sacrifices? Part of the atonement process of the sacrifice for the priests was not just doing the sacrifice ritual but participating personally in it by eating it as well. This was commanded.

How does Paul connect this observation with our participation with Christ's sacrifice? Our eating the Lord's Supper makes us intimate and personal participants of His sacrifice for our atonement.

The priests participated in the altar by eating the sin offering.  It was given to take away the guilt of the community.  The connection made by Paul with our participation is that when we take the bread we are "eating" of the body of Christ.  The cup is His blood.  We know he did this for us.  So we too are participating. We come to the Table knowing we are sinners and ask for forgiveness.  We must be in love and fellowship with our brothers.  This is a forgiving and remembering meal.

The priests on the Old Testament could actually be compared to Jesus in teh New Testament. They took on the sacrifice for the people upon themselves. Just as Christ took on the sacrifice for all men upon Himself.

When we hare in the Lord's Supper now, we are actually taking on a part of the sins of others upon ourselves. we are promising to share in the redemption of others. We are sharing the concept of giving our lives to help others to become one with Jesus and the Father.

When the people brought there sacrifices to the alter, the priests ate a portion of it for the atonement of there sin.

We are partaking in communion and sharing it with other believers, the same as the priests made burnt offerings for the people on the alter.

Q3. In what way did the priests participate in the altar by eating of the Old Testament sacrifices? How does Paul connect this observation with our participation with Christ's sacrifice?

 1. Not just the offering of the goat by fire, but eating of a portion by the priests, was part of the atonement process.

 2. When we eat of the Lord's Supper, we become sharers in the offering of Christ on the cross for our sins.In the same way, our participation in the remembrance in communion is to take part in eating and drinking the bread and wine served.

"Consider the people of Israel: Do not those who eat the sacrifices participate (koinōnos) in the altar3?" (1 Corinthians 10:18)

According to the principle given in Mat 23:20-21  "Therefore, whoever swears by the altar, swears both by the altar and by everything on it" there is a communion (common-union) between He, to whom the offering is made, the alter, and things sacrificed on it.

In what way did the priests participate in the altar by eating of the Old Testament sacrifices?

"Why didn't you eat the sin offering in the sanctuary area? It is most holy; it was given to you to take away the guilt of the community by making atonement for them before the LORD." (Leviticus 10:17)

Dr. Ralph writes: "In other words, not only the offering of the goat by fire, but also the eating of a portion by the priests, was part of the atonement process."

Me: A portion of the sacrifices offered to God was eaten by the *offerer, and another portion by the priests. This was the priest main job, if you will allow. The flesh of the sin offering is given to be eaten by the priests that they may show the *offerer that God has graciously accepted the sacrifice, and thereby "take away the guilt of the community..."  By doing so, they were worshipers of the same God. They are united in their worship.

How does Paul connect this observation with our participation with Christ's sacrifice?

"Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf" verse 17. We all who partake participate in worshiping the same God and are united in our worship.

*Noun. 1. offerer - someone who presents something to another for acceptance or rejection.

Thank you Lord.
