Q3. Communion and Isaiah 53

  • 2 weeks later...

I believe that Jesus used Isaiah 53 as a reference to His disciples to indicate that once again He was fulfilling Scripture, just as He did by His birth and throughout His ministry. He was in fact once more establishing His Divinity, although some of His disciples were unable to grasp that principle until after His resurrection

This chapter helps explain the meaning of Jesus' death by it's reference that Jesus made this sacrifice of His own free will, and that it wasn't made so that only a few would benefit, but that it was to make atonement for the sins of all mankind, so that those who elected to believe in Him as their Lord and Saviour could approach God directly without the need for further ritual or sacrifices and without the need of intervention from another human, such as was the case with the Israelites, where only the priests could enter the Holy of Holies and then only after completing elaborate purification rites.

I think the disciples were in shock ater the crucifixion. It was very difficult for them to get their heads around what was really happening. It would not all come together for them until the Power of Pentecost was upon them and the Holy Spirit gave revelation. One of the purposes of the Holy Spirit is to bring to memory all that is needed for understanding, and that really took place at Pentecost, so that all that Jesus had explained to them suddenly became real in their understanding. Thus Jesus put in place the passages of Scripture that would be illuminated on that day, in powerj.

Once the Holy Spirit annointed them with understanding of the truth about Jesus, they took on His own person within them and became His flesh on the earth, doing the same works, teaching the same Truth, being sons of God in fact.

How does this chapter explain the meaning of Jesus' death? I think huge volumes have been written on the subject. But the essence of it might be that Jesus fulfilled both Old Testament law and also around 130 OT prophecies which no other single man on earth could ever fulfil. This alone clearly identifies Jesus as the Son of God in whom we are to place ALL our faith.

. Why did Jesus purposely point his disciples to the phrasing found in Isaiah 53? How does this chapter help explain the meaning of Jesus' death?

by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many,

and he will bear their iniquities.because he poured out his life unto death,

and was numbered with the transgressors.

For he bore the sin of many,

and made intercession for the transgressors."

Jesus is letting them know that He has full knowledge of the Father's plan and that it is the will of God for the things that are about to happen to Him must happen. He is letting them know that it is the only way that their sins and the sins of all Isreal can be forgiven. He alone can carry the sins of a nation on His shoulders. He alone has the power to overcome death and fulfill the prophecy about Him in Isaiah. He becomes one of the transgressors so that He alone can make intercession for them before the Father. He is showing the love He has for them in letting them know what is about to occur, yet they still missed the most important point. He was truly the Son of the Living God in their presence. He would rise again in three days and they could have been their to see it happen but they were afraid and missed the main idea that Jesus was giving them. He was their and is our Saviour.

Q3. Why did Jesus purposely point his disciples to the phrasing found in Isaiah 53? How does this chapter help explain the meaning of Jesus' death?

In part I think it was to point to the fulfillment of the prophecy, the Scriptures which told about Him. He was the suffering and righteous servant. He was to bear the inquities of others. It sresses His innocence and the voluntary nature of His sacrifice. It is not an accident, a confluence of unexpected or unfortunate events. He pours out His life. He makes an intercession for transgressors. He offers Himself willingly as the sacrifice so that He can bear the sins of many.

Jesus purposely pointed the phrase found in Isaiah 53 because it spoke of the Messiah , Jesus , who would suffer for the sins of all people. Such a prophency is astounding ! Who would have believed that God would choose to save the world through a humble, suffering servant rather than a glorious King? The idea is contrary to human pride and worldly thinking . God often works in ways we don't expect . The Messiah's strenght is shown by humility , suffering and mercy.

Jesus sought to show His disciples that the scriptures about Him were fulfilled and that He indeed was the Messiah. The scriptures in Isaiah 53 detail His sacrificial death. The Father illustrates the extraordinary suffering that would be done by His righteous servant so that many would be justified.

Of note: To this day Isaiah 52:13-53:12 is not read during the normal cycle of scripture reading in synagogues.

Jesus was Isaiah 53 every bit as much as he was all of the Scriptures. It was not unusual for the Scriptures to be woven creatively into daily conversation by the rabbis of that time. However, when Jesus spoke the scriptures He revealed the finished tapestry- Himself in full creative power and authority. He used passages from Isaiah in John. 12:38-40, confirming what Isaiah had seen in a vision some 700 yrs. earlier of His glory and then spoke of the Son of God. The disciples were familiar with Jesus using this passage prior to the Passover. As Christ was to be the Passover Lamb, it was appropriate for Him to continue expounding on this theme as the Last Supper would take place a few days later and the disciples soon would be witnesses of the fulfillment of this passage. This fulfillment would become the link between the Old Covenant and the New Covenant.

The complete redemption by Jesus on the cross

Jesus purposely pointed to Is. 53 to because He soon would become the fulfillment of those scriptures which they had known for years. He poured out his life unto death--a choice He made. He was numbered with the transgressors--crucified with 2 other true transgressors. Bore the sins of many--He died for all mankind. Made intercession for the transgressors--for us and the other man on the cross. Also he will bear their iniquities--took upon himself our sins. Perfect, exact picture of why, how & what happened to Jesus that day!!

JESUS WAS LETTING HIS DISCIPLES KNOW THAT HE CAME TO FULFILL THE PROPHESIES WRITTEN ABOUT HIM LONG BEFORE THEY WERE EVEN AROUND.ISAIAH HAD WRITTEN THAT CHRIST WOULD VOLUNTARILY LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR THE SINS OF MANKIND, THAT HE WOULD BE NUMBERED WITH THE TRANSGRESSORS.THEY DIDNT TRULY UNDERSTAND THAT HE CAME TO DIE AS A RANSOM FOR MANY SO THE LORD HAD TO REVEAL SCRIPTURES TO THEM WHICH THEY PROBABLY UNDERSTOOD WITH MUCH MORE CLARITY WHEN THEY WERE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT.THE BIBLE SAYS HE IS THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH.THIS CHAPTER HELPS US TO UNDERSTAND THAT HIS DEATH WAS A VOLUNTARY SACRIFICE FOR ALL OF US...HE TOOK OUR INFIRMITIES AND BORE OUR DISEASES; HE WAS WOUNDED FOR OUR TRANSGRESSIONS AND BRUISED FOR OUR INEQUITIES; THE CHASTISEMENT FOR OUR PEACE WAS UPON HIM.HE DIED FOR YOU AND I SO OUR SINS WOULD BE COMPLETELY FORGIVEN...PRAISE GOD...

Jesus's death had a far higher purpose than just the salvation and deliverance of Israel. The Jews understood themselves to be a special nation, Yahweh's chosen people, not transgressors in the broadest sense of godlessness. They were expecting the divine promise of a Deliverer King. But here Jesus was pointing them to the truth that in order to gain that deliverance, their Anointed One was going to be numbered with the godless. He was going to be smitten by God and afflicted with the iniquity of many more than just their nation. He was going to be wounded and crushed to pour out His life-blood to gain mankind's peace with God. He was going to make intercession for the wicked world to be made righteous and redeemed to God. He was explaining His true mission to the disciples and how He was to fulfill the centuries-old promise of Messiah.

Isaiah 53 is an incredible prophetic picture of the reason for Jesus' earthly life. He came to suffer our sins on our behalf and restore our relationship to Yahweh. The death of Jesus was a work of sacrificial love and it is our glorious salvation. But ultimately, the fundamental purpose for Jesus' death was to prosper and accomplish the will of the LORD (Isa.53:10). The will of the Father is that all who will believe on the Son of God shall have resurrected, eternal life with Him (John 6:38-40).

Q3. Why did Jesus purposely point his disciples to the phrasing found in Isaiah 53? How does this chapter help explain the meaning of Jesus' death?

JESUS REFERENCED ISAIAH 53 BECAUSE IT WAS THE WORD THAT WAS WRITTEN THAT HE CAME TO FULFILL. HE WANTED THEM TO REMEMBER WHAT HIS PURPOSE WAS AND TO REMIND THEM THAT HE WAS THERE TO FILL THAT PURPOSE. TO SERVE THE FATHER'S WILL.

THIS CHAPTER WAS WRITTEN AS PROPHECY TO ILLUSTRATE THINGS TO COME. JESUS CAME TO FULFILL THAT PROPHESY, IT WAS THE ONLY WAY. IT HAD TO BE DONE.

Jesus purposely pointed the disciples to the phrasing of Isaiah 53 because it is a passage that contained the prophesy about the kind of death He as the Messiah would go through for the redemption of mankind. He did that so that if they understood the passage, they would understand the reason for His death to fulfill the prophessy in the passage.

The chapter, Isaiah 53, helps to explain the meaning of Christ's death in that it explains how the Messiah would suffer and die for the sins of others even though He was without sin. The messiah was to go through this suffering and death willingly with all humlity. This prophesy was fulfilled in Jesus and by Him when the jews wickedly handed Him to be crucified. They thought they were harming Him but the fact was that they were merely playing into the perfect plan of the Lord God for the salvation of many.

Jesus pointed to the phrasing in Isaiah 53 because it was the prophetic revelation as to the whole purpose of Jesus' life. He was the fulfillment of that scripture, and I'm remembering that Jesus also emphasized throughout the last supper, that He had come as a servant. I'm reading all of Isaiah 53 and that is what is standing out to me. Servants are lowly and not thought highly of. Servants aren't noticed or have attention drawn to themselves. They aren't viewed as very chosen or special people. They aren't thought of for exalted ministries and are often forgotten and rejected by men. Being a servant means working on behalf of another, not for our own means or selfish gain but to benefit someone else. Jesus did all this for us. Though He was without any sin and He healed and fed and taught and comforted so many, He was despised, rejected and a man of sorrow. He still was a servant to us who were the sinners, the transgressors, the ones deserving of the punishment He ultimately endured for us. He came to serve and because He was obedient to our Father in this, He was raised up, exalted and triumphant and given a portion among the great.

This was God's will for Him, to crush Him and to cause Him to suffer and to make His life a guilt offering. The will of the Lord ultimately prospered Him. Because He poured out His life for many, He saw the light of life and was satisfied. He bore the sins of other people and continues to make intercession for them (us).

Jesus is the model of what our lives are to be lived for also. We can't do exactly what Jesus did as He was the final sacrifice to atone for sin, but we can be servants to each other, benefiting each other. Esteeming other as better than ourselves and in many ways, humbly laying down our lives for others to benefit Christ's Kingdom. We will suffer and be despised and be asked by God to suffer silently and to intercede in prayer for those against us, but in due time, He raises us up also and we too, will see the light of life and be satisfied sharing in Christ's glory.

Q3. Why did Jesus purposely point his disciples to the phrasing found in Isaiah 53?

Believe it or not, all men are sinners.

Here is the proof: "As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one" (Romans 3:10); "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God". (Romans 3:23)

We the many, is every human who has His life

Why did Jesus purposely point his disciples to the phrasing found in Isaiah 53?

He didn't want them to think His forgiveness had a limit, that He only died for the sins of some of mankind. Rather He points them to the passage in Isaiah 53 because He wants them to recall the entire Suffering Servant passage. He wants them to gain from this passage understanding for the reason for his death.

How does this chapter help explain the meaning of Jesus' death?

It shows that 'he poured out his life unto death, and that 'he bore the sins of many.' It also shows that 'he will bear their iniquities.' Isaiah 53 explains how Jesus was going to suffer and die on the cross by taking our sins upon Himself.

To tell them beforehand so they would know He was truth upon its fulfillment. To teach them. To help them gain a better understanding of who He was and what He was doing. Jesus died for us and took on our sins so we can come to Him knowing that He has full understanding of suffering and have compassion on us. We can't identify with people who haven't shared our experiences. He died for many because not all will accept the free gift of salvation.

Q3. Why did Jesus purposely point his disciples to the phrasing found in Isaiah 53? How does this chapter help explain the meaning of Jesus' death?

Jesus purposely pointed the disciples to Isiah 53 in my opinion because that verse in the scriptures

was referring to the messiah and he wanted to point that he was the messiah and his violent death

was for the world and them and that it was fulfilling that scripture . That what they were about to

see done to him was the fulfillment of the scripture he was referring to .... To keep this in mind as

they pondered things in the following days.

This chapter in Isiah does explain the death of Jesus as being the fullfillment for the savior that was

the promised one ....

Q3. Why did Jesus purposely point his disciples to the phrasing found in Isaiah 53? How does this chapter help explain the meaning of Jesus' death?

I believe he used the phrasing in Isaiah 53 because it gave a full explanation and again a fullfilment of prophecy.

I helps me to understand fully the item for item description of the crucifixion. I understand the whole thing much better now that I have read that, and read that, and read that.
