Q1. The Value of Suffering

Recommended Posts

Q1. (Hebrews 2:9) In what ways did Jesus suffer during his life and death? In what ways are we likely to suffer? Does suffering have any value? What happens when we live in such a way to avoid all suffering?

Jesus suffered during his life and death by enduring the temptations of Satan. He suffered at the hands of the Jewish leaders and high priest. He suffered by being beaten and scourged by the Romans and eventually at the end, was put on the cross, humiliated and scorned, he died on the cross.

Because Christ was rejected by his own people and suffered under the Romans, Jesus tells us that just as they hated him, they will hate us also. So we are to suffer at times as Jesus did, because we have placed our faith, confidence and truth in him.

The suffering we may endure will teach us that through this suffering a great value can be learned, that we put our faith and life in Jesus care. This also teaches us that God's grace is sufficient and helps to keep us humble.

If we live in such away so as to avoid suffering we are not putting ourselves out front to freely preach and teach the word of God. If we avoid this we have not committed ourselves to Christ nor do we obey his commandments.

“But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭2:9‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Jesus suffered in order for us to be saved. He was made into human form so that he could be like us and to suffer the pains of human kind. Through His death we were to be made sinless. Our own suffering comes from temptation and falling into our own sinful nature and not taking into consideration as to why Jesus died on the cross for us. Our own selfishness in not accepting Christ as our Saviour only puts us in a predicament that will result in the suffering of not having Jesus in our lives. Jesus suffered so that he could complete His mission through His blood so that we shall receive eternal life.

In Hebrews 2:10, Jesus is said to have come to perfection by suffering. This suffering includes not only suffering for our sins, but being tempted by Satan and having to leave God’s presence to become human (made lower than the angels). He suffered temptation, pain, sorrow, betrayal, disappointment, joy, etc. We will also suffer those trials. Suffering produces a strong faith. By trying to avoid sufferings, our faith weakens and we are more likely to fall into Satan’s deceit.

Jesus suffered during his life from those who rejected him and what he offered. Those non believers from his own family and friends and town  who would talk about him and curse him for being holy and righteousness. He was human, and like us we feel pain and sorrow when we are talked about and scorned and ridiculed and meet with physical violence for our beliefs.  the physical pain of his trial and crucifixion are recorded but still unimaginable to fully understand.  just like Christ, suffering is the way of a Christian and though it may not be as grafted and painful, it is still something that we must go through in order for God's mercy to be revealed in our lives. If we live in a way to avoid pain and suffering, then we are not doing the will of God, for living a godly and holy and righteous life will bring suffering.  The value of living through suffering is to receive eternal life with God the father who has promised us a life with him in heaven if we do his will here on earth. He shall wipe all tears away.

Q1. (Hebrews 2:9) In what ways did Jesus suffer during his life and death? In what ways are we likely to suffer? Does suffering have any value? What happens when we live in such a way to avoid all suffering?

When He was just an infant the King of Israel sought to take Jesus' life out of jealousy because he was afraid of anyone taking his throne here on earth. So Jesus' earthly parents had to go to Egypt to escape King Herod's evil plot. When He started His earthly ministry the very neighborhood He grew up in ridiculed in and sought to kill Him for His speaking prophecy and saying it was fulfilled in their hearing. Any time that He spoke in parables He continually had to explain them to his disciples since they did not understand what He was talking about. When He was arrested He was betrayed with a kiss and also His betrayer was bought with 30 silver coins. All of his disciples fled when He was arrested. Peter denied him 3 times. Jesus was spat upon, laughed at, mocked and whipped with a cat of nine tails 39 times till He was bloody. He had to carry His own cross. He had spikes pounded in his wrists and feet both and a crown of thorns upon His head as well. He was rejected and despised by men. He was also counted among sinners and also was buried among them. We could be mocked, scoffed at, rejected and betrayed by someone we know. Yes when we suffer wrongly for the cause of Christ God is glorified and we are showing the enemy that we are not going to give up our faith. We cheapen our faith.

"In putting everything under him, God left nothing that is not subject to him. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him." (2:7b-8)

Jesus suffered great persecution daily, yet He remained in the Father,,, until He had suffered for all the sin of man. We can't comprehend how much it hurt him while he was alive in his body, it was beyond horrible to die like this, but He was faithful to the end; we thank God for the faith of His son Jesus, who paid it ALL.  And how He quickens us all to service and praise to His Glorious work here on earth. OH, how He loves us, today and forever, though we are like dirty rags. He loves what he created and give us every chance to repent and follow Him with our tiny cross compared to His immense suffering and death for the salvation of all.

Q1. (Hebrews 2:9) In what ways did Jesus suffer during his life and death?

Jesus suffered more than any of us ever have or will. His family didn’t exactly welcome him being about his father’s business. He was  beaten, mocked, not accepted by the Jews. Bruised, made to carry his cross that they then hung him on. Accused by the Pharisees of being of baal when he healed the man on the sabbath. He was even tempered by the devil. Crucified and lied on. The list can go on and on. Jesus suffered yet he never stopped fulfilling the job he came here to do. Take on the sins of man and conquer death.

In what ways are we likely to suffer?

Well the Bible says in John 16:33 that we will have suffering in this world, but be courageous. He has conquered the world. We suffer through loss, sickness and disease. Poverty, false accusations and some are persecuted for believing in Jesus in their countries.

Does suffering have any value?
As said in Romans 5:3-5 suffering produces endurance which produces character which produces hope. It draws us closer to depending on God which is what we should be doing anyway. For everything not just when we are going through something. The value would be a closer relationship with God.

What happens when we live in such a way to avoid all suffering?

It’s not possible to live this life without suffering. Even non believers suffer. The only difference is that as a believer we aren’t suffering alone. God is with us and he continues to supply what we need to get through any trial or tribulation. In the suffering we draw closer to him and learn more about his character which makes you stronger in your relationship your belief in God and his word.
