stonedcoldsoberbytheblood
'For the Word of God is living and active' relates again to TODAY. It is our means of provision today, our means of forgiveness of sins today and our true sword to combat death and sin today. The Word is living and alive to assist us in gathering lost sheep and is again, for beleivers who labor (hear and do), in order to enter rest. It is for sinners who need to find rest. It is so that we may ALL give account to Him. And by Him judging our thoughts and attitudes, we are to labor even more at being more like Christ. We need to continually expose ourselves to the Word, as the writer says: "so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience" or so we will not fall into the way of the world, even though we are in it. Dar
Q4. (Hebrews 4:12-13) What do these two verses have to do with what precedes them? How do we labour? Study! be in the word, so we don't fall into unbelief! How is the Word described? the Word is Quick, meaning "life" - it is Powerful, meaning "active" and "effectual", it is "Sharp" and "Piercing", cutting through to the truth, discerning the thoughts that have hold of our hearts. What effect does the Word have on us? God's Word is all powerfull, we cannot escape from the soul serching Word of God. The Word has power to show us who we are, it is truth for us! pay attention when we feel its penetrating truth that lays open who we are. It is a light to light the way. I cannot hide the truth from God, that is why the Word is so important, let it do its work in me, cut through falsehoods, God knows and sees all and He wants me to understand how lost I am without the Word, bread from heaven, that feeds my soul, the Word that helps my "faith" to grow. The Word is God's direction for us, a light to light the way to fellowship with God; The Word is also Jesus! We need both, and then we will truly have Rest. Why do we need to continually expose ourselves to the Word of God? They have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, "Lord," who has believed our report? So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. Stay in the Word, our hearts still need to be softened, our faith still needs to grow, it is all powerful. linda bass
The Word is described as living and active, sharper than a two edged sword. The effect the Word has on us is that it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. We need to continually expose ourselves to the Word of God because we need to stay strong in our faith so we can resist the temptation to sin. Eudora
Q4. (Hebrews 4:12-13) What do these two verses have to do with what precedes them? How is the Word described? What effect does the Word have on us? Why do we need to continually expose ourselves to the Word of God? Knowing that we can rest in His assurance that God keeps His word to us, we can also rest in the truth that only He judges what is in our heart. No matter how many people judge us here on earth, on judgment day, before our King, this is what truly matters. There is a scripture written that we should judge ourselves now before that day. 1 Corinthians 11:31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. If we searchingly examined ourselves [detecting our shortcomings and recognizing our own condition], we should not be judged and penalty decreed [by the divine judgment]. When we [fall short and] are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined and chastened, so that we may not [finally] be condemned [to eternal punishment along] with the world. The word should continually convict where conviction is needed and speak to our changed hearts in revelation of truth. The word should enlighten us daily as to how to love all those around us and shed light where light needs to expose the darkness. 2nd Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. The word of God exposes us to the truth of who we are in God's eyes and where and what He knows needs to be re-arranged to be all that He knows that we can potentially become. We will all give account to the all knowing and all seeing eyes of God, this is the reason we need to daily expose ourselves to His written and spoken Word. Don W
These two verses are directly related to the whole passage for a couple of reasons: one being that if a person ignores the Word of God, especially about the salvation the Lord Jesus offers to them by the grace of God, then they are in deep trouble as the Word of God (the Holy Bible) will someday expose them for who they really are as unbelievers at the Day of Judgment. Another thing God

We need the Word to tell 1, to get saved, 2, to fellowship with our brothers and sisters, and 3, to know what God says. Fellowship alone will not do it. What effect does the Word have on us? Why do we need to continually expose ourselves to the Word of God? It describes these two verses as a Living Powerful God that will judge us with His all seeing eyes, penetrating a person's innermost being, soul, spirit, joints and marrow. The total depth of a person. The Word is described as living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart (Hebrews 4:12). It gives us the reasons for giving serious attention to the exhortation in verse 11- "Let us, therefore, make every effprt to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience." Semeion
Q4. (Hebrews 4:12-13) What do these two verses have to do with what precedes them? How is the Word described? What effect does the Word have on us? Why do we need to continually expose ourselves to the Word of God? A call of disobedience is a reminder to us all. It reminds us that God sees all, and knows all. His Word is judgment alone, and it will "cut" and judge the person. The Word is described as more powerful than a dagger(a double edged sword). It has the ability to expose us to our own hidden motives and we need that exposing to remind us who we were/are in Christ. For most of us, it is a hard and ugly thing to do. It's like staring at a mirror and seeing all our innards exposed and seeing its grotesqueness and not liking it one bit. But once it is exposed, we can see what is ailing us, and where our hearts lie.
InTotalAwe
Q4. (Hebrews 4:12-13) What do these two verses have to do with what precedes them? Nothing is hid from God. He knows even the very intentions of the heart. If we are doing those things necessary to enter into His rest to be seen of men but that's not really who we are in our heart, He knows it. Only those committed to Him in truth will enter His rest. How is the Word described? It is alive and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword. What effect does the Word have on us? It divides soul and spirit, and discerns our thoughts. Why do we need to continually expose ourselves to the Word of God? To keep our hearts and minds focused on Him; for strength, encouragement and growth in the knowledge of God. The Word is our guide book for life. We are to learn it, live it and pass it on by teaching and example to our children and children's children.
Mephibesheth
Q4. (Hebrews 4:12-13) What do these two verses have to do with what precedes them? How is the Word described? What effect does the Word have on us? Why do we need to continually expose ourselves to the Word of God? 1) The first word in v12 is "for" - this is a conjunction which means it is directly connected to the preceeding verse which tells us to make every effort to enter God's rest and not to fall short of it through disobedience. 2) The word is described as living and active - these words are present tense and are connected to the writer's discussion of the word "Today" in the previous verses. Thus, God's word is active and has life in it today (Mar. 8, 2008) 3) The word's effect on us is that it discerns and defines the differences between our spirit (which is our spiritual life in relation to God) and our soul (which is our psychological life in relation to ourselves) and demands that our souls get in line with our spirits through humble acceptance of His Word. 4) We need to continually expose ourselves to the Word of God so that our minds become and stay renewed! JanMary
Q4. (Hebrews 4:12-13) What do these two verses have to do with what precedes them? I believe these verses are the antidote to apostasy, or back sliding, falling away...the writer gave first the warning that we are always being seduced to turn away from God, then he gives the prescription to prevent the problem from taking place. How is the Word described? It's alive, operative, energizing and effective; sharper than any two edged sword, able to penetrate to the dividing line of the breath of life (soul) and the immortal spirit, and of joints and marrow of the deepest parts of our nature, exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging the very thought and purposes of the heart. What effect does the Word have on us? It feeds our spirit, instructs our minds and hearts, gives guidance, contains wisdom for every circumstance of life, brings conviction, connects us the the Lord, it's the main way He communicates with us, it brings us "life" because it's "alive", God breathed, it reveals motives, exposes sin, gives hope, and encouragement, reveals thoughts and purposes., it renews my fallen thinking so that I begin to think His thoughts....it's my lifeline to my Father and it's the revelation of Him to me...it tells me how He thinks, Who He is, what He does, and it tells me who I am in Him. Why do we need to continually expose ourselves to the Word of God? Without it I would starve to death spiritually, then the void would leave a foothold for Satan to establish his lies and seduction in my thinking. It is His enlightenment to darkened thinking, foolish thoughts, and because the world/ Satan are constantly barraging my mind to go the way of the world, it's the sword with which to do spiritual warfare...Jesus used it in dealing with Satan, and that's my example to follow. Patricia A
Q4. (Hebrews 4:12-13) What do these two verses have to do with what precedes them? The preceding verses were concerned with entering the "rest". By getting into the Word and living by it, we are led to know the joy of the rest which comes from living as God teaches us. This is true joy and peace. How is the Word described? The Word is quick and powerful and sharper than ny twoedged sword. It is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. What effect does the Word have on us? As we get into the Word, we learn how God wants us to live, we learn about his standards and we become aware of our wrongdoing. In other words, it helps us live to serve and glorify our Lord. Why do we need to continually expose ourselves to the Word of God? Because of our sinful nature, it is so easy to slip back into old ways of sinfulness. We need to continually expose ourselves to the Word of God to constantly remind ourselves of God's laws and His love for us.
Sheryl
These two verses are describing the power of God's Word. The preceding verses are expressing the importance of being obedient to the Word because that is the only path to find rest in Him. The Word is described as LIVING and ACTIVE. Living in the sense that it is powerful, active in the sense that it is dangerous. In other words, not to be taken lightly. The Word of God is effective in tearing through our mask of pretences and expose our true selves. We need to continue in the Word of God so that we may grow to maturity in Christ, so that we may be convicted in our hearts when we sin, humbled in our spirit so that we may have ears to hear the truth in order to live obediently as children desiring to please God, our Father. hanks
Q4. (Hebrews 4:12-13) What do these two verses have to do with what precede them? How is the Word described? What effect does the Word have on us? Why do we need to continually expose ourselves to the Word of God? The previous verses demonstrate that God's rest is still available, but we are told that effort is necessary in order to enter that rest. We must be diligent to make sure that our only hope is in Jesus Christ our Lord. We must not be careless and treat God's promises lightly. We are given a warning that unbelief never goes undetected. We cannot ignore His Word with impunity; it must be received in faith and obeyed in daily life. This word of God is: living - constantly and actively alive; powerful - that is, energizing; cutting - sharper than any two-edged sword; dividing - piercing the soul and spirit; discerning - discriminating and judging with regard to the thoughts and intents of the heart. It is the word that judges us, not we who judge the word. We need to continually expose ourselves to the Word, remembering that the Word cannot be taken lightly. If we do not listen we face no one less than God himself,

C Riv
Q4. (Hebrews 4:12-13) What do these two verses have to do with what precedes them? How is the Word described? What effect does the Word have on us? Why do we need to continually expose ourselves to the Word of God? The verses prior are talking about entering "THE REST" These verses are telling us how powerful the word of God is. Vs 12 is showing us the rule that Jesus is going to use, and vs. 13 is telling us that God sees all, none of us, not one will escape giving an account of our lifes. The Word of God is a live and active, knowing the difference of natural and what is spiritual. I think that the Word convicts us for He knows our thoughts and motives, the Word keeps us as true as possible drawing us closer to Him all the time. The more we expose ourselves to the Word the more hungry for it we become. It helps us in understanding and guides us, teaches us, enriches us and is our strength. The Word is my fuel! servant for Christ
Q4. (Hebrews 4:12-13) What do these two verses have to do with what precedes them? How is the Word described? What effect does the Word have on us? Why do we need to continually expose ourselves to the Word of God? It points out the seriousness of not believing God's word. The Word of God determines who will enter into God's rest. It is a sharp sword that cuts into our innermost being in order to discern whether out thoughts and motives are spiritual or fleshly. It has two edges, either cutting to save our lives or judging us unto eternal death. Our response to God's word should be to dray near to Jesus as our high priest. The Word of God has the power to sustain creation. The Word of God also releases grace, power, and revelation by which believers grow in their faith and commitment to Jesus Christ. The Word of God is likewise the sword that God has given us whereby we may fight Satan. The Word of God has the power to judge us. The thoughts and intents of the heart. In other words. those who choose to ignore God's word will one day experience it as a word of condemnation. There is nothing that we can hide from God. We must continually expose ourselves to God's word so we can hear it, seek to understand it, praise God, love it, let it be our joy and delight, accept what the word says, hide it deep in our hearts, trust it, place our hope in its promises, we must obey what it commands, and live according to it. DrD
These verses warn us, they caution us to seriously consider what God has done to bring about our redemption - that we should not allow this opportunity for our deliverence from sin and its consequence or the opportunity to enter into an eternal relationship with God through Jesus to slip away. . . Theses verse let us know that there is nothing else that there is no other redemptive plan other than God's plan and that there is a consequence to great for us to suffer if we fail to take advantage of this divine act of grace and mercy. . . The Word of God is described as being both alive and able to provide life to all that will heard and act upon it - and powerful enough to bring judgment upon those who deny and reject it. . . That it is also able to refute any and all excuses and provide deliverence to all of humanity. . . The effect the Word of God has upon humanity is that it, and only it, can and will bring provide salvation. . . Romans 1:16 (KJV) 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. Continual exposure to the Word of God develops us into vessels that honor God and are useful to God. . .
peaches
Our obedience or disobedience is tied to where our hearts are. If we want the heart and mind of God, we read and study the word. When we neglect to spend time in the word, we become more absorbed with what we want, rather than what God wants, setting us up for failure. The thought I had when I read this scripture was that the word is live, it breathes, and it shows us ourselves. Sometimes that's the very reason that we don't read it - we're afraid that it will show us just how bad we are! But that's what God wants. To show us our weaknesses through his word so that we can depend on Him to help us obey Him. God knows that we will fall sometimes, and we will have to answer for that. But what he is really looking at is the condition of our hearts, and the word does a great job of making that diagnosis.
