The old failed due to the weakness of our sinful nature ( Romans 8: 3 ) We broke the covenant and now had nothing to look forward to but certain judgement for rebellion against "The Majesty on High".

If our Hearts are not changed following God's rules will be unpleasant and difficult. We will rebel against being told how to live. The Holy Spirit, however, gives us new desires helping us want to obey God ( Philippians 2: 12, 13 ) With new hearts, we find serving God is our greatest joy.

I think the old covenant didn't work because the people basically said "You do it for us, Moses. We don't want to hear from God for ourselves". After all God did to get them out of Egypt, they really didn't want to know Him intimately as Moses did. Yet that was what God wanted. God gave them the ten commandments as the bottom line for a community, but that didn't bring them any closer to Him.

God wanted something that would draw people close to Him, people who would have intimacy and love on their hearts. So He sent the full story - Jesus - and those who recognise Him (as Peter did and was called the 'Rock on Which I will Build my Church') are drawn into close reality of fellowship with the Most High God. They would receive the very Spirit of the living God to live within them. This was indeed a new covenant.

This would bring about the levels of intimacy that God had planned for - His people appreciating his law to the extent of loving and obeying it, having it as part of the structure of their being just like God, adoring Him just as He adores them. This new law would enable the people to long for and desire God just as He does them. What blessing this is! Lord, I so much thank you that I, through the blood of Jesus, can participate in this new covenant.

The old covenant failed because of the weakness in main his failure to follow the Lord and be faithful to His Laws. Man's sinful flesh always led him away and caused him to be lost to God love and promises,till Christ and His saving us from our selves.

When Jesus arose from the dead and was taken up to heaven He promised to send a comforter and teached who would lead us in all truth. His Holy Spirit came to dwell with man in our hearts to teach us the things of God and to remind us when we fall short and need to repent,but the greatest promise is that God will remember our sins no more,we who are a sinful people will be forgiven of all our sin as Christ promised. He died once for all sins and they will be remembered no more. We who once were lost now are found and are safe in Christ Jesus.

Man was unable to keep the old covenant because he was/is sinful.

The new covenant:

that we would be with God & be His people forever

Because of their sinful nature, the old covenant was broken. Now there was nothing to look forward to, but the judgment.

The law given by God was the glory of God in all His truth and righteousness, perfect in every way. The law itself was meant to be a measuring line, a goal of sorts to strive for. So if the law was perfect and the equation of the law + man = good doesn't add up the fault must be with man. In order to make the equation add up God needed to do something, so He revised it a little, the law + man + forgiveness = good, now it adds up. But the law still had to be fullfilled, there had to be an atonement for sin and that atonement was His Son, Jesus Christ. The law failed, simply because of man judging man but God made it right again. When Moses came with the Law, written by the finger of God, the law was broken when he judged what was going on with the people of Israel. Then he had to go back up the mountain and have God write them again.

The law is not cast away, for if it was then God would not have said, "I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts." What is cast away is the way we get to know the LORD. Prior to Jesus all but a few only knew the LORD through the teachings of others. While Jesus was here all who came in contact with Him knew the Father, and after the resurection, all know the LORD, from the greatest to the least.

The old covenant failed because the people of Israel did not remain faithful to the covenant, or to God and God turned away from them. The four promises God makes in His New Covenant are:

1) He will put His laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. (As I learn and study this, its as if God is so faithful to the people (and us), that because they chose rebellion, which invited judgement on themselves, God wanted them back and this time He is willing to "imbed" His word in them (and us) to keep them with Him. His power of forgiveness (and such abounding love) is always available for us.)

2) He will then be their God (now totally accepted and honoured by them (us) as He always wanted).

3) They will all personally know their Lord (and know His Love)

4) He will forgive their wickedness and remember their sins no more. He loved them (and us) that much, that He gave them another chance. He has done everything to encourage their faithfulness and bury their rebellion so they could escape judgement. What love He shows us. He wants us with Him. He does not want us to fail. He seems to always have a plan B or C waiting for us, when we need it and turn back to Him. He wants us to understand His mercy. Thank you Lord for loving us that much.

The Old Covenant failed because no was good enough to keep the law tha was set. People were offering sacrifices year after year and there was no change in people's heart. It was also the Covenant of law between God and Israel.

The new and better way is the Covenant of grace- Christ's offer to forgive our sins and bring us to God through His sacrificial death

Under God's new Covenant, God's law is inside us. It is no longer an external set of rules and principles. The Holy Spirit reminds us of Christ's words, activates our conscience, influences our motives and desire, and makes us want to obey.

God found fault with the Old Covenant in that it would tell people what was sin but it could not help them to stop sinning.

The primary promises in Jer 31:31-34 are; God writes His laws in our hearts and minds, He will be God to us and we are His people, there is no need to be taught of Him for all know Him from the least to the greatest, and He is merciful to us in our unrighteousness and forgets our sins and iniquities.

To forgive those that are repentant and make them children of God, giving them a new heart and a greater experience with the Holy Spirit. I beleive the Old Covenant on its own didn't fail, it was the people that failed to keep it.

They were unfaithful to God even though He had just rescued them from Egypt. Just shows we are weak and sinful and need God to be the whole focus in our lives.

It was not possible to succeed, as the psalmist said "we are all like dirty rags, there is no one good, not one." I think in part it was God's way of showing us how weak we really are and how we really need Him. It was to show us many things like God's mercy and love for us.

The primary promises are that we will know the Lord personally. His Holy Spirit in us will guide and strengthen us and lead us to all truth. We must be faithful, but the Holy Spirit will make that possible.

Q2. (Hebrews 8:7-13) Why did the Old Covenant fail? The atonement to the guilty conscience was never satisfied. No matter how many animals were sacrificed, people still felt the guilt of their sin. There was no peace through the sacrifice of the blood of animals, but there is peace through the blood of Jesus Christ.

Colossians 1:20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

The Holy Spirit is our teacher now. When Christ died on the cross He gave His life as propitiation for all sin. This removed the barrier that separated us from God since the time of Adam. A physical sign of this can be seen when Christ died and the curtain in the Temple that kept everyone but the High Priest out of the Holy of Holies was torn in two. This was done to show that we as individuals now have direct access to God. We no longer need a priesthood to rule over us and act as intermediaries between us and God. Jesus Christ is our High Priest.

1 John 2:27:

"But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him."

There are many ministers that do not like this scripture because it lets them know that the sheep they shepherd do not in fact belong to them. John the Baptist had to let go of the sheep that were following Him, in order for Jesus to increase, John had to de-crease. This doesn
