The veil of the tabernacle in the Old Testament functioned as a barrier that separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place or the Holy of Holies, where the ark of the covenant, representing God's throne or dwelling place, was located. All men did not have to God, only the serving priest. What is the significance of the veil being ripped in two at Jesus' crucifixion? When Jesus died, this heavy curtain in the Temple in Jerusalem was rent in two from top to bottom signifying that Christ's death removed the separation between God and man. Why is our access to God called a "new and living way"? Our access to God is called a "new and living way" because the tradition of the priest going to God on behalf of man was no longer necessary. In the "new and living way" every man can go to God for himself. In what sense is it new? New because access to God didn't exist for all humans before Jesus opened up the way through his sacrifice on the cross for our sins. In what sense is it living? Living because Jesus is not a mere martyr but a resurrected and living Savior, who "always lives to make intercession" (Hebrews 7:25) for us. The Most Holy Place in the temple was sealed from view by a curtain, Only the high priest could enter this holy room, and he did so only once a year on the Day of Atonement when he offered the sacrifice for the nation's sins. Jesus' death removed the curtain, and all believers may walk into God's presence at any time.We have significant privileges associated with our new life in Christ, we have personal access to God through Christ and can draw near to Him without an elaborate system. It is a "new and living way ," because it didn't exist for humans before Jesus opened up the way through His sacrifice for our sins, and living because He is not a mere martyr but a resurrected and living Savior, who "always lives to make intercession" for us. It seperated the Spirit of God from the unholy presence of the people and caused the priest to fear the presence of God to the wxtent that they tied bells and rope to the high Priest ankles so the would know if he was not moving. It meant that there was a seperation between the people and God. The veil being torn meant that the seperation of the people and God had been removed and that they were now at liberty to go to the Lord on their own. It is a new and living way because that Jesus has been raised from the dead. He is now living and interseding for us as our High Priest. It is new in that Jesus is a live it is new because it replaced the old law and the sacrifices of animals with the sacrifice of the true lamb of God for us the last and greatest sacrifice. It is living because Christ is living in every believer and is preparing a place for those who chose to follow Him and live the lives that He has called each of us to do. It was impossible for anyone to penetrate the veil of the Holy of Holies into the presence of God and live. The high priest, once a year, dutifully cleansed in ritual fashion, was permitted entry just one time each year, and even he went in prepared to die and be brought out by rope in that condition. Thle fact was that the animal blood they brought in was never satisfactory as the removal of their personal sins. It had nothing to do with their entry into a world of sin, and would nave nothing to do with their exit. The veil represented their carnal, fleshly nature, which covered their eyes from seeing God, and, reluctantly, inhibited communion. When Jesus died - His flesh was killed - then, for the first time since Adam sinned, a completej, unblemished, holy human being had not given in to fleshly desire. Satan was beaten by a human being, and the curtain representing flesh was no longer needed, for Christ could proceed on into the Presence of the most High God without fear of failure or death. He could take us in with Him if we are willing.This creates the new and living way - namely that Christ has done all that is needed, and we are to appropriate it for ourselves. This is a new and living way, because there is total depencence on access to the Life within Jesus who lives even today. It was new at the time of pentecostcost. It was a revelation of the Holy Spirit that they received on that day, and in whom they operated ever after that day. Revelation is new every day, as is God's message and plan for the day. Only the High Priest Could enter in to make atonement for sin. When the veil was torn in two upon Jesus' crucifixion the statement was made that all could now enter in to the Holiest of Holies. The new and living way that we have access to God is Jesus, who is alive and well. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. This is new because we all have access to the Father, at any time. Only the High Priest was to enter the Holy of Holies room, and he did so only once a year on the Day of Atonement when he offered the sacrifice for the nations sins. Jesus' death removed the veil or curtain, and all believers may walk into God's presence at any time. The heavy veil guarded the Holy of Holies place, where the Ark of the Covenant was,(the dwelling place of God) from being entered by humans directly, other than the High Priest, who entered once a year to offer the blood offering of animal sacrifices to atone for the sins of the people. At the time of Jesus' death, this veil ripped open from top to bottom, literally opening the way for all of us to personally come directly into God's presence. There was no longer a separation between God and man. Our access to God was new, as it had never been possible before, until Jesus opened the way for us through personally dying for our salvation from eternal death. It is "living" to this day, as our resurrected and living Saviour interceded for us when He died and rose again. He lives for us today as well. As described in the Synoptic Gospels, the veil being torn from top to bottom, is ascribed to the 'barrier' being removed between God and man. It is new because the way of the old was going through a priest who 'took' the sins of Israel and sacrificed bulls, goats for remision of sins. With Christ, he was the perfect sacrifice, only once was needed and He has paved the way for us to come straight to the Father. This gives us total access to the Throne. It opened a way into God's very presence and the Throne of Grace. It removed the separation between God and man. It is new and living because of Jesus. He is Alive and living among us. He lives to make intercession for His people. It is new because the Israaelites had limited access to God. It is living because Jesus is alive. Our Living Savior!!! The Ark of the Convenant was in the Holy of Holies and God's presence was upon it. The High Priest was the only person God permitted to enter the Holy of Holies once a year to spinkle sacrifical blood upon the mercy seat for the atonement of sin as instructed in Leviticus. This was atonement for the sins of the people of Israel. Again, only the High Priest, as instructed in Leviticus, was permitted to enter the Holy of Holies. Anyone else would die. The significance of the veil tearing down the center during Jesus' crucifixation signified God making Himself accessible to everyone, not just the High Priest. Having sacrificed Himself in His body on the cross, Jesus our High Priest entered the Most Holy Place and He made sinners perfect in holiness so that they too may enter through the curtain, His sacrificed and resurrected body being for us the new and living way. Only the high priest could enter, and only at specific times in the year. When the veil was ripped in two at Jesus' crucifixion Jesus' sacrifice made the way to God. The curtain/veil was not needed anymore. Our access to God is the new & living way because we don't have to go through a priest or any other means to speak to God ourselves & Jesus is our ever-living priest! The veil in the Old Testement was what seperated the un-holy from the Holy Living God, Our Creator. According to Jewish tradition, even to this day, when a son dies, his father tears his shirt as a sign of his agony and mourning. This is still traditional at Jewish funerals worldwide. The tearing away, of the curtain, was the opening of the path which leads us to God, by following Christ Jesus through His blood, to the Everlasting Father. Jesus leads us there. When The Son of God died,, His Father tore His veil. It is because of His great mercy toward us, that He allowed His Son to die for our redemption. And the tearing of that veil allows us to enter the Holy of Holies and fellowship with Him.. Jesus is the mediator who paid the ransom for our sin, once and for all with his blood, through His flesh. Jesus cleared the way, made the path open, similar to the goat in Leviticus. The goat took upon it all their iniquities, carrying them to a land cut off , a land of forgetfulness and separation. and went out into the wilderness, and lived. Jesus who is alive and sitting at the right hand of the throne, making intersession for us, before God. the alive and living God, whom we can now go to, through Jesus Christ. Christ did not enter a man made sanctuary, He entered the true sanctuary, which is in heaven in the very presence of God. New - because mankind could not do this before, only the high priest could come before God with his sacrifice and for the people. Jesus came to do the will of the Father, a new way for mankind to have fellowship with God Almighty, who is sitting on the throne. God prepared a body for Jesus, for He had no pleasure in sacrifices, He had pleasure in only one sacrifice, that of Christ Jesus, opening a new way for mankind to come into His presence. Christ's death was the only thing strong enough to tear the curtain in two, opening a way for us to have fellowship with the Almighty; For by this "new way" God's LAWS would be written on our minds and put in our hearts. Through this "new way" we came to understand what "love" is!! For God loved mankind so much He sent His only Son who died for our sins, but was resurrected and is at the right hand of God, thereby He gives everlasting life and power to us to live righteous lives. The way into the Tabernacle was closed to the people under the Old Covenant because of the blood of animal sacrifices could never completely atone their sins. The veil (curtain), that is His body. Whjen Jesus died, the veil (curtain) separating the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place was torn was "torn in two from top to bottom" (Mark 15:38). The veil (curtain) symbolizes the body of hrist in terms of suffering; like the veil (curtain), His body was torn to open the way into the divine presence. we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place because of Jesus' body and since we have a great Priest over the house of God.
