The " great cloud of witnesses' is composed of the people described in chapter 11.Their faithfulness is a constant encouragement to us. We do not struggle alone. and we are not the first to struggle with the problems we face. Others have run the race an won, and their witness stirs us to run and win also. What an inspiring heritage we have.

Using the analogy of running a race, we must never take our eyes off the goal.

( Phil. 3:14 ) I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Knowing Christ with the single-mindedness of an athlete in training. We must lay aside everything harmful and forsake anything that may distract us from keeping our eyes on Jesus ,winning the prize which is in heaven with Christ.

An Author is one who begins something so others may enter into, He is "One who takes the lead in anything and thus affords an example, a predecessor in a matter" ( Thayer 77 )

Christ is also the pioneer who stands before us to blaze the trail before us as the perfect example

The perfect Son of God became the victorious Pioneer of our Faith accomplished His mission. He defeated death and satan himself. Jesus was born for the cross as the death dealing blow to satan in the strategy to rescue sinners. He is the pioneer of our faith victorious and compassionate.

He lived by faith because He looked beyond His current struggle to the goal, the end, the joy of completion, when He would sit down at His Father's right hand....... Mission accomplished.

"Finisher' means, " Perfection or completeness, " or "one who brings any enterprise to its full and perfect consummation"

Jesus is the Beginning ( John 1: 1-5 ) and the end ( Rev. 5:1-12 ) of salvation.

Jesus is the "author" of our faith--He came to earth as a man to live the kind of life He wants us to emulate until we die and join Him!

It is that faith will help us to run our race if we give up the sinful things of this world and seek what is right, our faith will become stronger and we will be able to endure the struggles of this life.

Jesus is the author of our faith because He is the first of many brethren. He was the first raised by the Father and sat at His right hand. He was the first to finished the job the Father gave Him to do with out fault. He lived by faith knowing that what lay ahead was much better than what He was going to have to suffer. He was finisher because He completed the work God gave Him to do and made a way for us to be able to come to the Father through Him. With out Him and His completion of His chosen task we would be lost. He was made perfect by the Father, He knew no sin but died for our sins taking on our guilt and shedding it like a coat when He rose and over came death by the power given Him by the Father.

The "great cloud of witnesses" referred to in Heb 12:1 are the saints that went on before us, never having received the promise, who depend upon us to make it happen.

The analogy of a race is used here and in 1 Cor 9:24-27 to illustrate that it takes tremendous spiritual endurance to attain the finish line, to inherit our blessed hope, the New Jerusalem, the Kingdom of Heaven, eternity with our Savior, the One Holy Father.

Jesus, being the First Born of the Dead, walked first in the flesh to prove that we can live holy lives in this place, He paved the way. His great faith in the Father allowed Him to endure all things, knowing that once finished, He would inherit His rightful place at God's right hand.

By His resurrection He completed the work assigned to Him by Our Father, He perfected our faith, illustrating that we too, will be resurrected to glory with Him.

By keeping the faith we can conquer all that entangles us and run & not give up, pressing on to the finish. Keeping our eyes on Jesus and all He did and by trying to duplicate our life after His. He was committed to God and trusted Him for His Will to be done.

By resurrection He procured perfect salvation for all. They will receive, as will we, our full inheritance together in the New Heaven & New Earth

Though we may not know where we are going today, we must follow the leading of Christ and believe with faith that we will be going "home" to a greater place and will be made perfect in holiness with Christ when that great day comes.

The writer moves on from the Old Testament describing those who did great things because of their faith ( who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised) into the New Testament and the first Christians who faced persecution because of their faith (These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised).

All of the prophets as well as Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David and Samuel are the great cloud of witnesses. To live the ife of faith, we are to throw off the weight of sin that slows us down as we run the race and run it with perseverence. Jesus is the author and pioneer of our faith as He has run this race before us in obedience to His father, on the cross, and He fixed His focus on the end result and the joy of completion to be at His father's side. This is our example to do the same. By this example He perfected our faith for us.

This I feel the cloud of witness is much like faith. The unsaved that alive is a wintness that we should not go their way. The ones that died show us also. The same with the saved. Everything around you can get one to believe in anything. So everything around you can convince one to follow whatever you put your faith in. The Egyptians had reasons to believe they were going to defeat the Israelites because everything around them witnessed to them or most things around them did. If you believe that God is whom you believe lay aside everything else and go for God.
